I was persuaded to join a group of devotees in reciting the tenth decad of nammazhwar's tiruvaimozhi yesterday, and was so moved when I came across this particular verse which provided inspiration.

What a கவி நயம்!
But I thought that ஏலோ = அந்தோ gives a feeling of sadness.
Hence I took the liberty of cutting a 'leg' (கால்) from your lyric and it is now
பாலுள பாத்திரம் பொங்கு மேலே
- - பசுநெய் பச்சரிசியும் சேரு மேலே
நாலுகை வெல்லமும் ஏலமும் பச்சைக்
- - கருப் பூரமும் மணம் கமழுமேலே
மேலுள சூரியன் மிக மகிழ்ந்தே
- - மேதினி மீதருள் பொழியு மேலே
சூலுள பயிர்தரு விளை நிலங்கள்

மேலே shows the rising up of the prosperous ingredients (symbolizing the cornucopia of the harvest season). Note that the previous word is in the imperative commanding nature to promote the prosperity!

Yes CML, it sounds good with your changes. The 'rising up' imagery does suit the pongal theme.

The 'AlO' ending as used by nammazhwar is meant to convey sadness of the nAyikA at her separation from Krishna, but at first I felt 'ElO' did fit a joyous mood. It also gave a folksy touch (like in 'ElElO ailasA').

I guess I broke the convention by not posting in the new members thread. Will do it shortly. Here is the gist. I am an ordinary rasika of CM who migrated from enjoying/memorizing film music tunes to CM due to circumstances/people around. Live in California. I still remember that dialog between Nakeerar and Siva from thiruviLaiyADal movie....Television hadn't come to Madurai until '83 or so and we didn't have one in our home till mid eighties. We boys would repeatedly listen to cassette tapes of movie sound tracks, especially tiruviLaiyADal and tillAnA mOhanAmbAL. Many of the dialogs are still fresh in memory including this one:

iRaiyanAr (Sivaji Ganesan; what majestic voice and dialog delivery he had!): angam puzhudi paDa aruvALil ney pUSi Sangadanaik keer keer ena aRukkum nakkeeranO em pATTai ArAindu Sollat takkavan? (the 'keer keer' was elongated to a 'keeeeeeeer keeeeeeeeer' to great effect by Sivaji)

nakkeerar (who was the actor? hardly a patch on Sivaji in creating similar effect): SangaRuppad(u) engaL kulam SankaranArkk(u) Edu kulam? Sangai aRindunDu vAzhvOm aranE um pOl irandunDu vAzhvadillai

That's it - an angry Sivaperuman opens his third eye and burns nakeeran to ashes. The PANDya king intercedes on poor nakkeerar's behalf, Siva cools off, Keeran comes back to life. Dharumi (Nagesh) gets his gift hamper of 1000 gold coins. Subham.

Thanks folks for recalling the திருவிளயாடல் sequence. I didn't know that APN did the Nakkeerar.
That episode starring Sivaji is a masterpiece.
And Sridhar your Kavi (after kALamEgam) is simply superb. You have brought in, all the deities (especially the Siva family including his b-i-l) and let us followup with verses on them!

@ sankar/sivam - very good venba - looks like venba writing is second nature to you; one thaLai rule adjustment may be needed in the 1st line.

@sankar/krishnan - another good one, let that aranganathan bring more and more verses here....

We have a venbA vEndar and a kuRaL arasar with us, in whose praise I can say:

I continuously struggle with the grammar (the above kuRaL has multiple taLai errors!) and just can't stop wondering at the ease with which Sankar and msm produce such perfectly grammatical yet beautiful verses. You guys rock!

you are 100% right; ஆஹா ! நல்ல தவறு (கண்டு) பிடிப்பு (error-catching) சங்கர் அவர்களே!

If I remember correct, only நாள், மலர், காசு, பிறப்பு - these are allowed as ஈற்றுச்சீர் in a venba.
Though பிறப்பு is நிரை-நேர் it has குறில் as the final அசை (syllable) as opposed to அவனே which is also நிரை-நேர் (புளிமா) but has 'னே’, the நெடில் as the final அசை, hence not allowed.

அவன் will work, though the emphasis created by ஏ-காரம் would be lost.

காப்புறுதி கையவனே கைப்பற்றும் மெய்யவனே
பாப்பொருளும் பண்ணும் அவன்.

not sure if another combination with the previous சீர் taken as கூவிளங்காய் , that is, as பண்ணுமவ, and the final siir as னே, will be acceptable. Only strong யாப்பிலக்கணம் experts can help us on this. Some may say பண்ணுமவ cannot be taken as கூவிளங்காய் but only as a கனிச்சீர் (தேமாங்கனி) which is absolutely not allowed in a venba.

May be this version sounds better?:

காப்புறுதி கையவனே கைப்பற்றும் மெய்யவனே
பாப்பண்ணு வானவ னே.

Too difficult to remember what transpired 68 years ago!
That is actually iambic tetrameter. From what I remember the iambus consists of two syllables. The mnemonic was
I am| bics march|from short| to long.
The rhyming is important. My teacher (Father Hawthorne) was impressed with my work and encouraged me to pursue Literature at London. Spirit of nationalism kept me back at bhArat and later disappointments banished me to NA!

Wanted to write my response in Thamizh and I think managed to do it above. எழுத எழுத, பழகப் பழக தமிழின் அற்புதம், ஆழம், விரிவு, செழுமை எல்லாம் மெல்ல மெல்ல புரிகிறது.
என்ன, பொன்பைரவி சொல்வது போல் தமிழ்ப்பற்றும் (கர்நாடக சங்கீதம் போல) ஒரு அடிமையாக்கும் பழக்கம் தான்.

@Ponbhairavi - yes, it (thamizh poetry, that too traditional poetry) is indeed pretty addictive..
