Oh the MDR video shows that he includes some behag phrases in shankarabharanam so skilfully that no one would notice.

It is noticeable, but of course shankarabharanam, and very beautiful shankarabharanam at that.

TM Krishna's (2006) renditions of the old (as per notation in the sangIta sampradAya pradarshinI) and contemporary versions of MD's tODi kRti kamalAmbikE constitute one such example.
