Congratulations on the audio quality. I was at the concert, and watched the video just now: the sound quality of the video is better than being there was!

(although there are many other reasons why I prefer to attend a concert rather than watch it at home.)

I caught this lovely concert by the Akkarai Sisters in the middle, entering at the end of Lathangi which I rewound to listen to fully. The song they played was Marivere Dikkevaru, followed by a beautiful Kharaharapriya whose highlights were the energetic kalpanaswarams featuring a very brisk, crisp exchange of ragas, which is the reason I write this post - I know I am not that experienced a concert listener, and this was something I haven't come across before, a ragamalika exchange during kalpana swarams in a main piece that is not an RTP.

They enthralled me with their very beautiful flow of changing ragas in the ragamalika swarams and they seemed to have an arresting grip over laya and bowing technique with the finale of these swaras - the intricate korvai and the finely minced up swaras at the end. This was all true of the korvais to finish up the Marivere piece too. Later, I returned to the beginning of the concert - the sister on the (our) left performed beautiful kalpana swaras for the famous Amritavarshini piece, heightening the tension and the interest at the end with the swaras sped up to a Khanda Nadai.

I detected some uncharacteristic (afaik) fingering slips which were disappointing at those moments, but it was still a great concert. Do check it out, it's recommended

Oh, some of the ragas I caught in the ragamalika were: khp, Kapi Narayani, Ranjani, Mohanam, Todi, Bahudari, Kaanada, Varamu, Kalyani, Varali, Arabhi, Nattai, Shri, Kaapi, behag, Shanmukhapriya, Hamsadhwani, Hindolam, Bhupalam, Nalinakanthi...

Please do correct me where I have gone wrong in any of my comments and add to these ragas, as there were a couple that I missed.

My sincere thanks to Parivadini for bringing this and so many other great concerts, especially to us concert-starved diaspora..

ragamaliga kalpana swaras indeed is an old thing . There is a famous recording of Madurai Mani iyer singing ragamaliga kalpanaswaras for inta sowkhya kapi. This is 1959 sangeetha kalanidhi concert accompanied by Lalgudi and pazhani. It is rare and is always happeding at sporadic intervals.

I was thinking those who are in MD-VA-NJ area is not concert starved at all . Not any more - it was perhaps once upon a time story

Yes it is a little better.. But just think of it.. I now travel 110 miles (to and fro) when I attend a concert. Every musical event is in Maryland, so very far away. There hasn't been much that I have heard of recently in Va.

A pattern has emerged. Musicians from India tour U.S. for a few weeks pre/post Cleaveland in Spring and for 6 to 8 weeks in the Fall. Rest of the time it is quite dry. One hypothesis as to why that is so in Summer is, these days a lot of North American kids learn from the top professionals in India and summer is the time they go to India to learn face to face with their gurus. Also, what does not help is some of the potential concert attendees ( including the one parent who accompanies the kids ) are on vacation in India or elsewhere.

It will be interesting to get the take of manisubramaniyan how valid any of this is.

And very "grand" it was too. A really powerful concert, but not lacking in subtlety, by a young man who most certainly has what I described recently as the boon of being able to sing. A strong voice, and beautifully used.

I haven't looked at the video... the concert was in a small room, and was a little too much for it --- but not so much too much that I would have missed a minute of the three hours.
