Hello Rasikas,

One of my student is highly capable and to certain extent Gifted in Bharatnatyam. He is age 12 and has bright future. However being a female dancer/teacher I have mostly learnt all my Padams (Natya songs) that are female oriented and struggling to find something appropriate for boys (for Padams) that I could then choreograph.

I am asking if any of you know some good padams/suggestions. Where can I find the music? Please help

Poonam

the jayadeva Ashtapadi 'Priye Charusheele' is a verse where Krishna is suffering the pain of separation and beseeches Radha to come and relieve his anguish.

Several songs from Nandanar charitram including Vazhi maraithu etc are suitable

Javalis would not be appropriate for a 12 y.o.. Padams dealing with sringara would also not be appropriate, like "ososi" or "yaro ivar yaro"). They require some maturity. However, any bhakti kriti/keerthanam would do, and can be performed by boys and girls alike. Some good ones have been suggested, but I'll add to the list with:

Siva/Ambal-
Ananda natamidum padam, Kedaragowla
Chandra chooda siva sankara parvati, Ragamalikai
Ananda koothanin, Hamsanandi
Sankara srigiri, Hamsanandi
Devi neeye thunai, Keeravani
Kanjadalayadakshi, Kamalamanohar
Sri chakra raja, Ragamalikai

Krishna/Mayon-
Devarnamas in general (perhaps excluding those involving vatsalyam)
any dashavataram
Palvadiyum mugam, Nattakurinji
Madura madura venu geetham, Atana
Govindan kuzhalosai, Ragamalikai
Swagatham Krishna, Mohanam
Asaindhadum mayil onru, Simhendramadhyamam

Murugan-
Kaa vaa vaa, Varali
Mayil vahana, Mohanam
Thiruparakundra vela, Hindolam
Arupadai veedu amarndha, Ragamalikai

Ganapati-
Ananda narthana, Nattai
Gajavadana karuna, Sriranjani
Gajavadana beduve, Hamsadhwani
Mahaganapathim manasa, Nattai
Gajananayutham, Chakravakam
Mahadevasutham aham, Arabhi

These are all very popular in the dance circuit.

Thank you everyone. Yes, too much of shringara bhav won't be suitable for him but I was thinking thoes more for down the road and wanted to know now so I can research more on thoes. He is good in Abhinaya in general of course has a lot of scope for improvement. Thank you everyone for some good suggestions. Can you please tell me how and where to get the music for the songs that you have suggested?
He does have few that has Bhakti bhav and devotees stories along with it so I was looking for some songs that have more scope for pure Abhinaya. Mainly Padams.

I really appreciate all the suggesions.

You can listen to many of them on musicindiaonline.com (click "special" on the side and then click the Bharata Natyam links). You may also try raaga.com and hummaa.com. All of these songs are also found on dance cassettes/cd's. If you're in Chennai, visit Giri traders in Mylapore. In the U.S., you can try websites like kalakendra.com or khazana.com.
