Podighai had started an "on line" program some time ago. It features present day performing artistes. Is the program still on?

I happened to catch a few episodes of this program during our recent visit. It is a very nice program. The erstwhile Chennai Doordharshan has transformed itself into this cultural station of choice amidst all the noise of the commercial networks. I got into the habit of checking 'what is on Podhigai now' before moving on to the fluff channels. I wonder what their viewership ratings are.

For this isayODu nAn program, I liked the fact that the hostess sits on the floor in that traditional fashion while talking to the artists. They have to work out the kinks a bit: they have to teach the callers ahead of time to mute the TV, they waste precious seconds in getting the callers to ask their questions. Also, they interrupt the flow of thought of the guest abruptly to go to the caller, that can be a bit smoother. These are all just minor annoyances, it is an excellent program.

I know a few people who feel the same about Podhigai. Lot of sensible programs amidst the movie , sports and news overdose. There are good music programs in the morning for those of you who can get up at 5.00 am. I don't expect the viewership to be high in the cities, it should be a lot higher in the towns & villages.

I understand that this program is set to disappear much to the chagrin of CM lovers. Is it possible to persuade “Podhigaiâ€

DD Podhigai has really some good innovative programs. Apart from Isayodu Naan, if you folks have time, Catch the Dial-in Sports Quiz on Saturdays night 10.15 PM and Crossword/En Kelvikku Enna Badil (Quiz with good puzzles) on Sundays at 3.00 PM.

If Sowmya and Vijay Shiva are going to be there, that is fine. But once a month from once a week?
An octogenarian friend of mine, curtailed in her movement but with a mind and rasanA all vibrant, loved the program and when I was in India, insisted on my seeing it. I did catch one and was greatly impressed...

Quite right! Ghatam Suresh also sang an unheard tamil song on Akilandeswari in Bhairavi when a guest requested. Very impressive. There answers were assertive, informative and convincing.

He is a creative genius and perfectionist. Hats off.

The hostess Anuradha deserves a pat for the packed brief introduction and prompts.

Only problem is that some of the callers describle useless stories, recommend irrelevently, and instead of being inquisitive display their laymanship. This prevents genuine callers waiting and missing their turn before the show ends.

Yes U are right. Few months back a morsing vidwan was the guest. An enthusiastic rasika wanted him to play alaipayudhae as he was very fond of that song. The vidwan with a smile said that with his instrument he can only play to the song and not the song itself. To much fun, few rasikas will start singing asking the vidwan to play for it. Such people really take out the time denying genuine persons participation in the interaction. This is the regular feature every week.

I just now finished watching a recording of the recent of Isaiyodu naan, renamed KALAIYODU NAAN! sent by my cousin in Bombay through rapidshare.
A very cool, organised presentation by V Suresh! surprised to listen to his vocal too. Nice voice and a brand new song in Bhairavi! He did not mention the composer. I liked comment on Konnakkol. I too agree that every laya vidwan is himself a konnakkol artiste. A good voice and presentation is an extra requirement for stage.
He also gave lot of information on varieties of ghatam and their making. quite interesting.
Good music, Good percussion calms one's mind. Suresh's did.
I believe the programme is reduced to once a month. One example where Govt. actions trun sucidical in cultural matters.

Though every laya vidwan is himself a konnakkol artiste never either practise or perform this upavadhyam in any of the concerts. at present this is used for laya vinyasam only. after madurai somu i cld not enjoy this art from any of the concerts. may not be sufficient for the lively hood of the vidwans i presume or encouraged by the main vocal artistes. A good tonal control is required for this art. The only living artiste is tiruchy thayumanavan.

In today's concert scenario, konnakkol when accompanyiing a vocalist may sound like somebody "talking" especially when every artiste is provided with a good mic in a closed auditorium?! I witnessed such a scene in a saxaphone concert when the main performer asked the konnakkol artiste to join only in the taniavarthanam.
Karaikkudi Mani himself does one round of Konnakkol cum mridangam in all his percussion shows. May be we should have a group of leading percussionists perform just konnakkol in a show. I have seen Palghat T R Sundaresan, V Suresh, Karthik and a few doing good konnakkol in special concerts.

I agree with r s maniam. Konnakkol in full bench kutcheris of yesteryears was a special attraction, especially in Chembai, Chitoor Subramanya Pillai and Madurai somu's concerts. We cannot forget Gopalachari, father of Vellore Ramabadran. He use to recite with sruthi alignment too! I have also heared T K Murthy doing a full length Konnakkol.

Today's guest was Prof SR Janakiraman. he was introduced as mobile encyclpedia of CM by the moderator. as usual rasikas instead of getting best out of him wanted him to sing few kritis to their taste. Really he conducted a lec dem for few rasikas relevent doubts , which was quite educative and interesting.

the program with vijai siva sir and sowmya maam was enlightening.they were talking about the music instruments that our country people used during medieval times.it was outstanding the way they described its magatthuvom by singing about them and their use by the people.

I was surprised when Prof SRJ mentioned that sangathis of vathapi ganapathim were not set by MD. Besides he also mentioned that most of MD s kritis were done with scope for sangathis and sangathis were not set by him. Interested to know more about this.

i am very eager to know if anyone has a recording of prof SRJ singing Vathapi without the sangathis... he sang a few snatches during the program and it was positively divine...

it seems that podhigai has done away with this progm which was widely applauded by all CM rasikas.
