Namaste,

this is a beautiful padam by Subbarama Iyer. The opening line is "Netru varen endru"
Here the love-lorn nayika confides in her friend that she has been let down by her lover, who has not turned up for the "date".

I would be most greatful if someone could add the necessary corrections to the version I am posting below:

Here are the lyrics and meaning as I understand them.....

Pallavi:
netru varen endru nayamigu pesi avar innalum vara kanane en todi

He said he would come, but until this day he has not turned up , oh friend !

Anupallavi:
kattru ulla podu nan tootri kollamalai tootram marainda pin tiggaikivei en todi

When he was here I did not take the opportunity to bond with him, and now he has left I feel lonley and regretful, oh friend !

Charanam:
1 attran karai tanile andi posu tinile yarum ariyamale annai tan en devan
2 mattrariya cenpol meniyei kandu nan mayangi avar vasam annen en todi

1 That evening on the river bank.. none knew we had embraced/loved each other
2 Seeing his spotless + golden body I joined with him in love , oh friend

Many thanks for the kind help

The corrected version is all given in bold.
rasikapriya 21: You made my job easier by giving the meaning.

There is another beautiful song (fit for dance) I remember from way back (either in a movie or as an isolated song--composer unknown) which goes like:

mAlaip pozhudin mayakkattilE nAn kanavu kaNDEn tOzhi
(In the evening allure I had a dream, oh friend!)
kanavinil vandavar yArenak kETTEn, kaNavar enRAr tOzhi
(I asked who was it that appeared in my dream and he answered "husband")
kaNavar enRAl avar kanavu muDindadum pirindadu En tOzhi
(If he was the husband why did he leave after the dream was over?)
......
It goes on some more which I don't remember. It is a beautiful song.

Let me first TRY to correct the transliteration of the verse:

nERRu varEn enRu nayamAga (nayamigu) pEsi avar innALum varak kANEnE en thoZhi

kARRu uLLa pOdu nAn tURRikoLLAmal tURRam maRainda pin digaikkavE en thoZhi

ARRangkarai tanilE andippozhuthinilE yArum aRiyAmalE aNaithAn en dEvan

mARRaRiyA sempon mEniyaik kaNdu nAn mayangi avar vasam AnEn thozhi.

Your translation ,in general, is o.k. The anupallavi LITERALY means that 'I failed to winnow when there was wind, I am flabbergasted when the wind stopped"( you got the gist right). The word mARRaRiyA means without equal / unequalled.
Hope this helps.

mahakavi and sundara rajan, thank you both for the corrections provided. I am just sorry that you had to look at the meaning in order to decipher the lyrics... I am not familiar with tamil.
sundara: as for the anupallavi , I could be wrong.. please let me know if you feel that the meaning could be interpreted otherwise.

Actually when you provide the meaning, any garbled words in the lyrics can be corrected easily. Please do so whenever you post the lyrics needing correction. As for the meaning, you got the overall meaning and the content quite intact. Unless you want the literal meaning for each word, what you provided as the meaning for each line makes good sense.
