I think i have heard Sruti sagar only thrice those reviews are there . Last time was He teamed up with Abhishek and i think that day he impressed me a lot .Personally i adore say more than Flute Mali or his chief protege Ramani , my favourite flutist is KS Gopalakrishnan where his blow has a more calming effect
Sruti sagar is a second generation disciple of Mali having learnt from Kesi in initial years . THen his guru is Dr Sundar(DKJ disciple). Sad that i again went late did not plan well for metro dug up work and i missed first two. Sahana got started what a pain balm is /was and will be sahana . Srutisagar only uses medium sized flute and sahana alapana was so beautiful and the krithi jaya jaya raghuramA (good selection for ramanavami)with neraval and swaras was well done
Sahana following devagandhari hmmm what an overlap to my inner ears . Devagandhari alapana was brilliant he only found pockets of intense carnaticness and he must have dedicated the rare composition SharadhE considering the Sringeri temple and sharada connection . The next was a bit faster and i had to take a lot of help to identify the krithi with some family member or a guru like person who was sitting right in front of srutisagar, nevertheless another rare sree ranjani sarvi evarre came out well
Few days back when TNSK sang it was Kalyani , again it is the same Kalyani .Kalyani is needlessly chasing me in succession. Kalyani is a beautiful ragam as long as the right non sagging krithi is picked up, this krithi has pockets of sag but one can lift it ,and that is what sruti sagar did it . Kalyani alapana was rendered with clinical precision with no unwanted sancharas , usually musicians take Kalyani if they have a recalcitrant throat is my own theory but there are exceptions , sruti aligned so well with Kalyani, kalyani was heard as a big sagaram . Yeta unara Krithi was clean like a santhanam rendition atlast at that time felt relieved a bit with a very famililar main krithi
Tukkadas had again variety of quite an unknown krithis . I think he played in ragam durga the pAlisamma that was my top pick. The coffee and varieties of coffee like Hindustani and Karnataka are all flute specials and he did well. HIs blowing power was tested well in the last thirruppugazh.
Madan Mohan played very well he did not obtruse but the days best show was unquestionably Praveen Sparsh . Praveen Sparsh can have his name renamed as Praveen Splash. What a lovely patterns at every juncture , he gets great right left combo from his guru(Guruvayoor Durai) and also manaseega touches from the Living Legend Trichy sankaran or his guru Pazhani . Possibly by birth he has got all splashes of valangiman thru his grand father Upendran Sir , what a brilliant percussionist i Praveen Splash , he was a bit like Trichy Sankaran playing for mali. All said we are having the talent of say Arjun Ganesh , Praveen and few days later i also heard NC Bharadwaj , all are doing very well for the world of mrudangam . 15 years back , i used to wonder say why Neyveli Venkatesh(especially centered on one main artist) , Patri Satish(plays for lot but high demand and way too over committed) are bringing such quality vs rest and now we are having a great set of mrudangam next generation artists with my mentioned 3 and also few students(not all for sure) of say Patri Satish , Mannargudi Eswaran , Srimushnam and Bhaktavatsalam students,Mrudangam is getting a surely nice renaissance with great quality talent
Sruti Sagar just wore veshti and angastoram and covered as though it is guruvayoor . I have seen him like a hermit few years back in mylapore kapali temple . HE is surely worshipping music . But in concert platform he can consciously pay attention not to play so many rare and uncommon krithis .He also does not announce krithis atleast apart from yetaunara, tiruppugazh and sumasayaka almost every krithi no one had a clue . i had some clue but i took some help from some one who appeared as a known person to sruti sagar.Way too many uncommon krithis is making him more unreachable to critical mass of rasikas.
Overall a very good to excellent concert for 2 hours
