The joy of hearing the so call Waugh Brothers combination of Abhishek and Anantha Krishnan always interest me . Well Abhishek every one knows bit more like say steve Waugh, but Anantha is the steady mark Waugh who runs so well with mrudangam . Mrudangist say like Anantha and Arjun Ganesh are the Duracell AA batteries. If i have a crib in general with Anantha , it is his lack of not playing concerts at all and restricting to very very few main artists . Anantha some times plays for Abhishek, Charumathi Raghuram and at times few more in that family of musicians . Anantha R Krishnan is like our Late Guru Karaikudi Mani (he only did in second half of his career , anantha appears to do even in his first half), zero access to most vocalist . Today is Dec 01st a key day with the hindu publishing season concerts, i hope we all hear anantha far more.
With two more stars , one is surely a kanjira next gen superstar Sundarkumar who can challenge and get inspiration from the greatest kanjira star Late Harishankar and another surely a star in the making S krishna(student of the brilliant ghatam suresh ) . It was tri percussion combo that managed not to overdo and convert as too percussion heavy concert. Also the youngest violinist Kamalakiran from continental USA who indeed performed with such ease the concert was a hit from almost from the start
The start in a rare mohanakalyani with a rare Lalgudi varnam had few sound hiccups , konjam balance especially with a low volume of mruduangam was the only disorder but it was still ok. Swarajathi adds so much carnatic oomph , abhishek usually has the habit of starting in some random line at times that he kind of does even for most songs , i am assuming this is a bit of trademanship and branding to silently bring more brammippu effect is. I am not saying for some songs where we start with anupallavi abhishek generally takes a route where he tries to fox you . My theory is say if for the first few mins you donot identify the song , then you sing the song that indeed gives that adadA adadA Abhishek for atleast for most critical count of rasikas . All said bhairavi swarajathi was done very well .
Kedaram and Abhishek are quite special and Abhi generally takes up a lot of MDR typecast sangathis . HE slows down a bit and with his masculine voice that has lot of microtones , MDR Guru and Abhishek Sishya appear as a bit of kedaram special vaarisu . What a krithi that this genius MDR composed with THyagaraja gurum ashrayE, i am making a proposition now and thinking that MDR created this composition where he ideated thinking how thyagaraja and dikshitar can be exactly balanced(bit more than rama neepai certainly less than Ananda natana prakasham) . The neraval was superb with clear mark wow markings .Cittaswaras in kedaram was also well done
The next was pantuvarAli , i have heard more earthquake sangathis of pantuvarali from Abhi .He had a great neraval and swaras were bit limited , he could have gone bit more like his paramaguru electric cheenu or another century back Maharajapuram vishwanatha iyer but it was impactful.
Tani with two pakkavadhyams , i was thinking it should not be a Guru Kaaraikudi mani longish tani , but Anantha - Sundarkumar - krishna just did not waste any cycle times and they kept it explosive for 16 mins. Kudos to them they gave more air time to vocalist
The biggest excitement for the whole concert was what came as zero full stop of Coma,,,,,,,,ss. When the alapana was on , i thought hurray Abhishek is going for RTP and i just prayed let him not give taanam to violinist which is one of his recurrent bad moves. Then he suddenly sang the line sAmiyai azhaitodi as a virththam, i thought it was some viruthttham , i was thinking few musicians and particularly KBMK sang R Viruththam Pallavi , but i just later found out it was a varnam composition.
Samiyai azhaiTodi vAdi SAkhiyE was the varnam . so many ideas of kamas with so many intense patterns felt he was riding like a Ferrari motor cycle final lap he abhishek sAmiyai nijamavE azhaiTOdi vandAn. Brilliance added by especially Anantha with so much of steady patterns of both left and right balance created lovely envelope of classicism .Some lines like vA vA enru ketka vA vA , appeared some energy commas where i felt i lost 1 kg in one day.
Abhishek spoke briefly and said he thanked late Rajarathinam pillai(not TNR) and introduced in the crowd mrudangist Nellai Kannan. At the end i just said thank you to WOw brothers and walked with Nellai Kannan . Nellai Kannan was the mrudangist who played For the prominent dance vaadyar Swamimalai K Rajarathnam Pillai(born 1931 died 1994).Certainly the Tanjore quartet varnam in khamas was well sung and i am assuming many bharathanatyam artists benefited with this vaadyar then before 1994.
Post kamas there were two fillers one a demoted Eti janma of Todi and the other excessively promoted with lot of alapana phrases where he sang LG thillana of pahadi. Some one in the audience could have thought todi and pahadi is one single ragamaliga composition.
Abhishek still minorly irritates with his posture of moving away from microphone especially when he goes for higher register where he purposely moves away, hopefully let that not happen. All 5 artists were pushing the Carnatic envelope, particularly abhishek and anantha are the best varaprasadam cousins that we have in our cottage Carnatic music industry.
Overall an excellent concert for 2 hours and 20 mins
