This concert is more like Madurai mani meeting TR Subramaniam to me . This Vidwan Suryaprakash will go in the history books of creating and crafting Pallavi and swarajathis where it can be enumerated all the way from Poochi-Ariyakudi thru GNB-TRS -Lalgudi -TNS and he is going to create a legacy with such carnatic sampradaya purity
Just 2 samples to illustrate that
Swarajathis were championed by Shyama Sastri . From the most popular Bhairavi to a rare todi to rarest yadhukula kambOdhi and a bit later Ponniah pillai thamizh Bhairavi swarajathi all this gives so much carnatic oomph . Instead of you hearing 4 krithis of trinity and papansam sivan you can hear one swarajathi. What a beautiful idea with this reetigowla swarajathi . KandA nee had a remarkable choice of words to slowly step up the reetigowlai rasa . Lots of swaraksharam thrown in plenty. Reetigowlai choice of swrarajathi was as cherry picking like a Lalgudi picking up a ragam of thillana. From the relatively low to middle register of "ma ni ni sudhanE ni ga mA gamanE with swaraksharam" a bit of TRS like creation and then to higher register lines like a Shyama Krishna sodhari of Bhairavi to words like isaiyin karai kadanthu Muruga maal maruga paruthi what a body of knowledge he leaves.
The second is the RTP with a palindrome. The Pallavi line is
The ru va ru dhE - thO naa thO - kar ka - si va gu ru mu ru gu va si
The only palindrome I know is Malayalam . He told the thamizh equivalent of palindrome he said some term like maatru ??? and he picked up the talam chatushra jathi matya talam(which has reverse mirror symmetry) and raga “sa ra sa” ngi . Since he skipped the neraval for main and he gave full 40 mins for the RTP. Everything was done ,even the trikaalam and adequate repetition of Pallavi rasa was performed for us to register . The taanam was very detailed as much as 6 to 7 mins or so and with copious swaras like mmi , pallavi and swarajathi was very rare . Suryaprakash explained the second half as siva moola mandram and something else for first half that I cannot recollect.
Kandadevi vijayaraghavan was a Tyagi , for a 7 min alapana in Kalyani it was a 3 min return. For kapi it was just 4 mins cappuccino return, very short and crisp sarasangi . The morsing artist nerkunam Manikandan may be related to nerkunam Shankar who was there in the Dias .He twanged and created right impact . Thank god morsing and violin Shruthi matched. The sure young hero is KH Vineeth , I could not identify and disambiguate if his guru patri Satish is playing or Vineeth is playing . Of late ln the last 4 years lot of High quality mridangam youngsters are joining , they are exceptionally good. He was a thyagi who played with such speed the first round of tani then completely cut the kuraippu and just finished with great final touches , they all gave time for Pallavi.
Vineet and suryaprakash toured recently in usa all that experience helped especially with jet speed hindolam swaras , early hamsadhwani ,Nishadam centric Kalyani swaras. Kapi intensity and ragamaliga swaras . Vineet like patri has great right left balance. Kudos to duracell patri for getting his disciple with such perfection, he has few more disciples who are all doing well. I would have personally preferred a more likeable Kalyani krithi than nambi kettavar , I guess he dropped that for mishrachapu.
Overall an excellent to outstanding concert for 2 and half hours
