Chitraveena P Ganesh, Madhuradhwani - 05 Feb

R K Convention Hall, Mylapore, Chennai

P Ganesh - Chitraveena
M R Gopinath - Violin
Madipakam Suresh - Mridangam
Nerkunam Shankar - Kanjira

It was an excellent concert of the Chitraveena maestro - as ever. Absolute adherence to tradition and utlising the full scope of the unique Vadya are but a few qualities of the hugely talented Ganesh.

The serene Sri Raga Varnam - Sami nine- gave a perfect start.

Teliyaleru Rama (Dhenuka) which came next literally conveyed the Sahitya of the kriti. The few rounds of swaras played for the Pallavi were simple and elegant.

Lalita brought in a fine contrast with a beautiful aalaapana for Hiranmayim. Niraval at 'Sangita vadya vinodinim' was full of bhava and followed by fine rounds of swaras for an atheetha eduppu. The taara - atitaara sthaayi prayogas during swaraprastara were chaste and marked with clarity.

Next was the celebrated Bhairavi Swarajati of Syama sastri which shone in splendour with absolute swara - sahitya clarity.

Kalaavati Kamalaasanayuvati (Kalaavati-Dikshitar) extolling Goddess Saraswati, was an appropriate choice for Vasantha Panchamil day.

Mohana raga aalaapana was highly satisfying and the irresistible Kaapaali - the 'main' of the concert with imaginative swaras at Pallavi was a wholesome presentation. Swarasahitya at Kaapaali (Gaa Paa li) was subtly employed.

The pakkamelam artists M R Gopinath (violin), Madipakam Suresh (Mridanga) and Nerkunam Shankar (Kanjira) played nicely and unobtrusively. The Tani for Kapali (Aadi Taalam @ Samam) was compact.

The concluding items 'Aasaimukham' (Jonpuri- Bharatiyar) and the Tirupugazh in Suddhasaveri were superb.

Needless to point out that the Naadaprapancha created by the finely tuned strings of Chitraveena for a 5 kattai (G) pitch was just divine.

Thanks to R K Ramakrishnan for making available good music regularly (and in YouTube) especially during these times.
