Ravi Shankar plays MOHANKAUNS (24 minutes) on cd, Music India Polygram CDNF119, HOMAGE TO GANDHIJI. Other raga on this cd is Hemant. Unfortunately the recording is very poor.

G2 - you mean antara gandharam. The classification normally used on this forum is G1, G2, G3 etc....as per that Hindolam has G2. BTW, there are several kaunses with variations on Ga, Dha and Ni...Chandrakauns, Nandkauns etc...perhaps someone could post a cnsolidated list

Here is a short clip from a rendering of Suryakauns by Badr uz zaman and Qamar Uz Zaman.
Clip from the sargam phase where they explain this raga as a "Mel " of Chandrakauns and Mohankauns and demonstrate the Mohankauns portion, in a bit of detail.

Gobilalitha
Will try and put demo clips atleast , and full clips where they are not commercial.
Madkauns must be the madhukauns (must have been the pakisthani way of writing it)
A few more were located
Nawakauns(by padma talwalkar)
Harikauns (by aurangzeb rangi khan)

That should sum up my part of the story.
Of Course there is that totally different series that starts with Kaunsi---"

From the article, it appears that Mohankauns has a Ri. I presume it then that Mohankauns is S (R2) G2 M1 D1 N2 S

The raga Surya in Carnatic music is similar Hindolam but has G3 (as in Mohanam) ie Surya is S G3 M1 D1 N2 S

Dear shree coolkarni,

accept my compliments for the service you are doing to the music world.

I humbly beg to differ in one point. Madkauns (or madhkauns) is same as Mohankauns; it is NOT madhukauns.

May be Mohankauns was translated conveniently in pakistan as madkauns (probably like laxmikalyan being renamed as zurtabi) under the prevailing influence. Many such examples may be in the minds of learned rasikas members.

Open to correction anytime.

This is one wonderful discussion. We saw mention of Sarang Kauns.

https://youtu.be/A_JwtbQW3iI

This is a simple and wonderful illustration of this Raga by Delhi Shri Shankar Bhagavathar. He has self tuned and sung this Marathi Abhang “Sadguru Vanchoni”, composed by Sant Tukaram on Guru.

Impeccable clarity and no ambiguity in swaras.

For someone interested in swaras of this Ragam, excluding G2 from Hindolam and including R2 in its place is one simple way of understanding the swaras and swara sthanas.
