dhavaLAmbari

Post by SrinathK »

The 49th sampUrna mElakarta, dhavaLAmbari, goes as follows :

Aro : S R1 G3 M2 P D1 N1 S
Avaro : S N1 D1 P M2 G3 R1 S

With this rAgA being very sparsely explored (and needing a lot more attention - the only ones who've composed in it are composers who were specifically determined to compose in all the 72 mElas), we could probably count the number of compositions (all post trinity) in it on one hand. The distinguishing feature is the vivAdi N1 that distinguishes it apart from pantuvarALi.

It also has a curious feature that doing graha bhedam on it doesn't yield any other rAgA in the 72 series.

So taking up what was most likely the first known attempt at composing in all the 72 sampUrna mElAs, sung by (IIRC) the first person to record it in full as well : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-SRlBDyzTQ - dhavaLAmbari is the first rAgA.

A kriti of Pammal Shivadasan : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tX8G2qpBLQY

And then there's the Chitraveena Genius at work : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KobnpvvLVY8 - that was new.

But we're missing the two 72 mElA heavyweights here. If someone can share BMK and S Rajam singing this one, I'd be immensely grateful

Prompted by your post, I found this video of S. Rajam on YouTube (part 12 of a series it seems to be): https://youtu.be/A8A0Po9ie10?t=518

The song continues in part 13.
