That's what we call it. bheemplAsi is it's original name in HM. For all purposes, there is literally no difference between this and karnATaka dEvagAndhAri (or the modern D2 AbhEri), except maybe that GRG phrase from nagumomu and more plain note versions of G2 and N2 with some HM esque slides. Otherwise the difference between them is zero.
Aro : S G2 M1 P N2 S
Avaro : S N2 D2 P M1 G2 R2 S
So, the most popular number in this rAgA, by DKP : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54yIqReUGl4 - the whole essence of this raga along with some swaras is packed into this 6 minute rendition - I want to sing it like this, as they did!!
The other number that Madurai Mani Iyer made famous is "kandan karunai" :- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvsI7B-8tjQ - so famous that I have a recording of the audience bursting into applause when he started it. According to one comment on this, MMI even did neraval (and probably swaras??) for this.
The story is that both MMI and his friend Chitti alias PG Sundarrajan were inspired by the song veena madhura madhura kachu bOl to come up with this song. In fact, I found it here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JJfdVjjTYE

@SrinathK,
Beautiful!
I found another upload which may be more faithful to the original Sruti:
https://youtu.be/ct9M5zDjbx0
That scene captures the poignancy of Sita's life towards the end of Ramayana when she has to go to the forest alone...
That melancholic actress is Shobhana Samarth, the mother of Nutan and Tanuja!
I can safely say MMI elevated the tune to a different level with Kandan Karunai.

For my part, here are some great songs, including the one by LataMangeshkar. Music by CRamachandra. ( Anarkali)
https://sites.google.com/site/hindustha ... /beemplaas
What is the difference between Rathipathipriya and Beemplaas? They sound so very similar.
The lyrics of Eppadip padinaro mentions that Gurumani Sankararum .....thanithhamizh chollinaal
( chaste thamizh?) Did Adi Sankara give any such tamil song? No.
---------------------------------------------------------
But here we have a fine Dikshithar krithi.
