Madurai Shanmugavadivu Subbulakshmi is perhaps the personification of Carnatic Classical Divine and partly film music and perhaps one of the greatest and noted Nightingale of India who brought fame to our own Nation.Madurai is the Temple Town and also quiet famous for two great Carnatic Legends namely the ever green Madurai Mani Iyer and MS Amma!MS Ammas centenary is in the offing from 16th Sept 2015 and there are many plans to celebrate the great MS!MS was the best and great asset of India!
MS was endowed with Sadaasivam Sir of Kalki as her husband and was in the elite company of Rajjai Kalki and was deeply involved in the Indian Freedom days!
MS acted with GNB in the famed Sakunthalai and it was a great movie.Perhaps the best tribute to MS was by our first PM Nehru who once gave her an award!
MS said that she was honoured receive the same but Nehru quipped back that he was greatly happy to give the award to the QUeen of Music as he is only a layaman!We are honoured to hail the legend MS!

Dear Rasikas of Mumbai,
On the occasion of the commencement of the Bharat Ratna M.S.Subbulakshmi Centenary Year, Sri Shanmukhananda Fine Arts & Sangeetha Sabha – Mumbai will be honouring Smt Radha Viswanathan with the Sri Shanmukhananda Dr.M.S.Subbulakshmi Sangeetha Pracharya Award, which will be presented to her by the Hon’ble Governor of Maharashtra Shri Vidyasagar Rao.
Date: Sep 13th 2015
Time: 6 00 PM
This will be followed by a concert by Smt Gayathri Venkataraghavan.
All are welcome

Forumites; Mumbaikars MUST attend this function not only for MS Amma but also to honor Radha.My family will be represented by my brother and his wife from Chennai. Myself,my wife and my brother have contributed articles to the souvenir that Shanmukhananda was planning to bring out for the occasion. While my contributions are mostly from my posts in Rasikas. org--which forumites may be familiar with--my brother has contributed some - hitherto-unknown-to even -our own family--anecdotes about his experiences with the Family.

The function to felicitate Amma was over on 13th Sep 2015.
The Governor of Maharashtra honored Amma with the M.S.Subbulakshmi Award at a glittering function.
The auditorium was decorated with 100 huge pictures of MSS from her childhood onwards encompassing her entire life.
Fantastic effort by Shanmukhananda and Dr V Shankar deserves an applause for coordinating this majestic effort.
A picture of Amma in the Green Room of Shanmukhananda (where she has sung innumerable number of times with Patti)one hour before the function! When someone tried to persuade her that it was not necessary to go so early, she said that it was better to wait in the green room than in the Sabha's room !

It was indeed an overwhelming experience to start the journey of the MSS centenary from the birth place of my Grandmother Bharat Ratna M.S.Subbulakshmi's ancestral home. From what humble beginnings did she start her journey ? A shy girl from Madurai proceeding to become the Queen of Music! My daughters S.Aishwarya and S.Saundarya paid a musical homage to the legend who continues to live in the hearts of millions.

The name of the street where MSS was born is Hanumantharayan Koil Street - Madurai, very close to the Meenakshi Temple - South Tower.
Members of my Grandmother's extended family continue to live there. They are extremely gracious and wonderful people.
Once you reach there you may request them to show you round the house.(provided they are there and free)

Yes. She has sung "Thaye Yashodha" many times for Radha - Anandhi dance performances.
No recording is available.

I always hoped to see videos of MS singing Virboni, or a Sankarabharanam with swarakalapana etc. My wishes are many as I was not lucky enough to see MS perform.

I love the way she gets the award and then rushes past Rajiv and PV Narashima Rao and hands it over to Sadasivam Mama like it's a bomb or something and drops it. Wow, will we see another like this one?

The article says MS blue is mayil kazuthu (peacock blue-double color of blue and green). If my memory serves right, it was a lovely powder blue with sheen! Hope someone brings a picture here to show the revived color

A divine picture. Sari of course is not what I comment on. I am reminded of 'aham bhaktha paraadheenah'. MS amma shows devotion the best a human can; Smt. Radha is hooked on to her in total alignment with and devotion to a devotee.

The world comes next.

Loving is more than a sentiment--tolerance, then understanding which pave the way to that state of realizing it. it's the opposite of shutting ourselves up in the suffocating cell of narrow regionalism...
