NEXT OLI CONCERT: Sri R Suryaprakash on 6th Oct, 6:10 pm
The Tamizh Isai Movement
This was a strange civil war waged between two factions within the Carnatic music world. It began with a call for Tamizh to be recognised as a music language and for a substantial number of Tamizh compositions to be sung in Carnatic kucheries in Tamilnadu. The forerunners of this movement accused musical heavyweights of overt partiality for Telugu, Sanskrit and Kannada and of meting out step-motherly treatment to 'our very own Tamizh' . Battle lines were drawn, loyalties picked, sparks flew and a war of words began in the columns of the Hindu and other Tamil magazines.
The pro-Tamils realised that they had in M S Subbulakshmi, a strong votary for their cause. She built afresh a repertoire of Tamizh compositions by Suddhananda Bharati, Gopalakrishna Bharati, Arunachala Kavirayar and Papanasam Sivan et al, to name a few, and brought onto the concert platform several gems which would have otherwise faded into oblivion.
