Re: Gangeyabhushani
Shouldn't it be gAngEyabhUshaNi?

Re: Gangeyabhushani
Ah - it should be gAngEya there as well - as the 'son' of the kRtika maidens, murugan is kArtikEya, and as the 'son' of gangA, he is gAngEya, not kAngEya. The problem comes, as you know, from the tamizh letter for k and g being the same

Nikhil,
It's an obscure mELakartA rAgam -- meaning the ArOhaNa and avarOhaNa are very useful and relevant.
I came across this rAgam first in Sanjay Subramanian's 2008 or 2009 concert at Narada Gana Sabha for Carnatica. He sang some tODi main that day.

Re: Gangeyabhushani
The wikipedia page is quite full of mistakes, starting with the devanAgari transliteration of the rAga name, which has three errors. Quite an impressive feat!
The article should mention songs of composers like M.bAlamuraLikRSNa, who has a song in the rAga gAngEYabhUSANi.
GangAtarangini has a swarUpa of its own while using the same swaras as gAngEyabhUSaNi. It has a distinct d\m jAru glide, that is somewhat reminescent of sAvEri, while the D is a proper sudda d in this rAga, with sAvEri's being lower.
Also, in the vEnkaTamakhin treatment, kamalAmanOhari, refered to as manOhari, is a janya of gangAtarangini.
This is one of the mElarAgas that the DAgur house of dhrupadiya-s sing, along with kanakangi and calanATa and sankaraAbharanaM. It seems a cruel irony that we should discuss this rAga within a week of Rahim Fahimuddin DAgar passing away.

Tyagarakja's Paramatmudu velige is the best known composition in this raga.
Here is a composition of Swathi Tirunal (which I believe has been set to this raaga by Sri BMK)

Yes, lakShman, I am really sorry for the confusion. I must have been dreaming!
Both the examples I gave were for Vagadheeshwari.
There is a Tyagaraja kriti - evvarE rAmayya, in gAngeya bhUShani. As for as I know, recordings of this kriti from BMK, Seshagopalan, and S Sowmya are available.

Last year, Sanjay sang this ( evvarE rAmayya) as main at Malleswaram ( seva Sadan) , Bangalore. Detailed, 12 min alapana, with neraval ,swara etc.. That, especially the alapana, was brilliant. And, I remember, TNS singing this at Ramaseva Mandali concert during 2007 with alapana and swara.

Re: Gangeyabhushani
Ah, my joy at finding that this rAgam has in fact been discussed by scholarly personalities, down to the name. Time for a reboot.
gAngEyabhUshaNi is the 33rd sampUrNa mEla rAgA of the rtu chakra (rtu means season, of which there are 6), with the following Arohanam and Avarohanam
Aro : S R3 G3 M1 P D1 N3 S
Avaro : S N3 D1 P M1 G3 R3 S
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxFMG3LuTjE
So the most popular composition in it, Thyagaraja's evvarE rAmayya, which has been given more detailed treatment than I imagined :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1LOn73lTcVo - BMK
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-T8HgGafv0 - Dr. S Ramanathan
And https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhpxmdhlbgQ - Hope RKM won't mind me, but he has treated many rare ragas elaborately
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aG_HEUwwgBI - And so has S Rajam
And as it turns out, Vedavalli mami has given a lecture series on the 72 mEla rAgAs (I wonder if I can purchase it somewhere), of which here's one on gAngEyabhUshaNi - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uoycqwk9mCw (I know I'm probably violating mod policy on sharing here, but just this once, to let the world know such things exist)
Of course, we must mention the other mElakarta composers as well
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iqH2z9yJa4 - Pammal Shivadasan's kriti (Can someone give me the name, it's not clear)
And Koteeswara Iyer's ninai manamE : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAR4nU_1uqg (Gomati and Sai Venkatesh)
Unfortunately I have not managed to locate S Rajam singing it.
Strangely, I have not found BMK's composition in it either.
Here's another composition from Sangeethapriya (it says sari evvarE, no idea who the composer is) : http://www.sangeethamshare.org/sv/092_S ... maniam_08/
And the surprise number is from Purandaradasa, by Thanjavur S Kalyanaraman : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ursI2OqH0Xg
So it looks like gAngEyabhUshaNi has indeed been elaborated more than what I thought it would have. Still, a few recordings that ought to make it here aren't available.
The asampUrNa mEla school's 33rd ragAnga rAgam is named gangAtarangiNi and it's characteristics are different. In general I do write about the unique phrases of sampUrNa mElas because in general all of them tend to be linear and some of them are the big popular extensively elaborated rAgAs with way too many phrases to list. It's a different story with the more organic rAgAs and the rAgAs of the asampUrNa school.
