Dear brother-member, srkris, Mr. Petelockett’s Konakkol is really amazing and it obviously shows his dedication and perseverance towards this art. Lot of thanks for bringing this out and furnishing the link here. By this, along with this, I could include one more of his amazing videos to the list of my Favourites in my Youtube account. I also wish to furnish its link here for our brother & sister (b/s)-members.amsharma.

For the first time a konnakkol artiste is being honoured. Shri Thayumanavan of Trichy is the only living legend, mastered in this upavadhyam after mannarkudi packiria pillai. Shri Guruvayur Dorai has taken up the lead of conferring the birudhu through his trust on 20th dec at Asthika samajam. [ ref Hindu dt 1st dec. engagements] Wishing shri Thayumanavan good luck. Let us hopefully wait for a lec dem on this subject by Music academy during morning sessions.

Konnakkol
shri Thayumanavan a reciepient of Kalaimamani and many other titles presented a lec dem on 27th at the mini hall of MA..
Few points noted are given below. Bear with me for poor expression.
He is visiting MA for the second time .1. At the time of Sheik chinna moulana and now When AKC is getting the highest honour and both from his native Trichy.
60 years back this was known as sollu kattu.
Shri Packria pillai was the one known vidwan in those days.
Vellore Ramabadran's father shriman Gopalachariar was a best konnakkol player . This art is a tough one and he has learnt this after getting lot of thrashing beating from his guru.
Layam pottu sollu kattu this is more than 80 years old.
He has learnt music from Alathoor Venkatesa Iyer . He used to get angry very often even for small mistakes.
In earlier years only kaarvai was prominent.
Konnakkol's origin is from Thirupugazh.
Thiru Gnana sambandhar too has mentioned about shad kaalam.
In earlier years the concert used to be for 5 hrs and more sollukattu will come for that durations with mirudhangam and Ghatam. Now everything is limited.
There are two types of singing one lakshana murai and the other lakshiya murai. in those days it was played w/o abiding by laws of CM. Only to please the ears of rasikas lot of korvai s were included earlier. Rasikas will enjoy when music comes with lot of such korvai s entinwined with purcussions instruments.
Konnakkol vidwan should know how to sing and must be an expert vocalist too.
the sollu used for this art is Hari Ohm Tharikita
He sang himself and played konnakkol interrupting singing every time . But when Pappu rao wanted either Vedavalli or Suguna purshoman to come to the stage for his assistance to get the full benifit of this dem and on their hesitation one of his disciples Andarkovil sundara rajan sang vathapi ganapathim and Thayumanavar played for this. This vidwan is a vocalist too and learns konnakkol from him.
BMS praised the vidwan's vidwath following are his observations
The origin of the word is from Konnupithal. konnu is soollu in telugu.
Kol means raja and pithal has gone and hence konnakkol
One vidwan from thanjavoor whose name he did not want to reveal had desire to sing along with konnakkol as upavadhyam and it was arranged. But vidwan forgot his kriti and started playing the sollukattu along with konnakkol vidwan. It shoud be taken care that singing should be done w/o concentrating on what konnakkol vidwan plays. For this, extra ability is needed for the vocalists too. Konnakkol vidwan also should know how to follow the vocalist w/o hindrance w/o spoiling his rendering.and mood.
Every musical instruments has its own language and only syllables change.
AKC 's remarks
He has learnt this art from pudukottai Dakshinamoorthy pillai as a direct disciple. He Is a parambariya kairasi man and 100s of dsciples all over the world stand authority for his success. He used encourage all his disciples and teaches them whatever he knows. His name Thayumanavan is very apt and as a mother taking care of her kids , he used to look after them with motherly affection and love.
Konnakkol vidwan shoud render with sruthi and raga w/o causing nuisance to the vocalist. He shoud aid the vocalist in rendering kriti. Sollu differs for mrudhangam and kanjira.
Though mirudangam and ghatam decorated the podium were not utilised for want of time. IMHO 50 mints for this lecdem is not sufficient. Totally the entire lecdem was excellent and educative. The vidwans present were TNK , Ttichy sankaran PSN, TRS , Chengleput to name few.

Hello all,

Lori Cotler is a voice major (Jazz) and is a graduate of Berklee College of Music, Boston. She got introduced to this art form while at Berklee. She is very self motivated and self taught. Over the last 3 years she has been learning from my father Vinod Venkataraman this fine art of Konnakol.

She uses it extensively in various Jazz collaborations including Latin Jazz, Reggae etc.

Regards,

Aishu

...Karnataca College of Percussion. Excellent stuff.

I have a CD of theirs called River Yamuna which combines some lovely instrumental and vocal performances with tala vadya pieces, all of which are brilliant. It includes this composition, and it is nice to see it being performed live.

They do some very unusual stuff like combining ghatams of different sruti, and also with morsings.
