vande gajendravadanam vAmAmkArUDhavallabhAshliShTam .
kumkumarAgashoNam kuvalayinIjArakorakApIDam
vandE gajEndra-vadanam vAmAnkArUDha-vallabhAshliSTaM|.
kumkuma-rAga-shoNam kuvalayinI-jAra-korakApIDam ||
vandE - I salute
gajEndravadanam - the Elephant-headed (deity)
vAma-anka-ArUDha-vallabhA-ashliSTaM - embraced by his consort, seated on his left lap [1]
kumkuma-rAga-shONam - One who is of a complexion ruddy like vermilion.
kuvalayinI-jAra-kOraka-ApIDam - One who has as a crest-jewel the young (crescent) moon. [2]
shrita - Those who have sought refuge {= sharaNAgata}shritatatessusiddhipradam
tatEH - the multitude, {= bRndaM/ bRndasya}
su-siddhi - success
pradaM - bestower
i.e - One who endows his votaries with excellent success.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Notes -
[1] It is significant to note here that a spouse always sat on the left lap, while a child/ grandchild/ children in law(!) sat on the rifght lap/ thigh. the story of pratIpa-shantanu-GangA will endorse this.
[2] kuvalayinIjArakorakApIDam - this was a real teaser, and my transaltion is based on some pretty obscure meanings of words used here. I give here a list of translations of each term in the compound word, and exhort other rasika-s to trey and make out a better translation of the samAsa -
the first meaning is the most common one, followed by obscure meanings.
kuvalaya = water lily; hence kuvalayini (a lA pushkarinI/ kamalini = a place where lilies abound or the group of lilies) Also earth.
jAra = lover /paramour (kuvalayinI-jAra hence could be the moon, since moonrise entails blossoming of lilies)
kOraka = bud; fibres/ filaments of the lotus; fragrance (moon-kOraka i.e moon bud for a sliver of the moon, a la pinju-madi in tamizh)
ApIDa = crush/ massage; wreath/ tiara / chaplet tied to one's crown
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
p.s -
Why not post the request in a new thread, avnipriya?
It may show up better in future searches...
Also, when you have a line that may be doubtful, give us the full verse, (and maybe indicate the line that need explanation)
This will -
1. Help the translators
2. Help people who may search for the same thing in the future.
