I am glad to see the collaboration, which I am sure will be fruitful.

Although it is very doubtful that any of our members would have any difficulties with Mylapore geography, especially near to Raga Sudha Hall, let me stress that 3rd St Abhiramapuram is not the same as East Abhiramapuram 3rd St --- although they are not far from each other. I have known auto drivers to be confused!

R.PARTHASARATHY – VEENA PLAYER ---------------------------------------------------------------.

Sri R.Parthasarathy is the son of late Sri Raghavan, also a Veena player. Sri Raghavan was the disciple of Cheranmadevi Subramanya Sastry.

Sri Raghavan, even though very well trained in carnatic music, been associated with film music for more than 5 decades.

Sri Parthasarathy started leaning Veena from his father.
Since there was always musical activities going on in Sri Raghavan’s home,
Sri Parthasarathy was able to assimilate very good knowledge in carnatic music and
got the proficiency in playing the Veena very well.

He was very much impressed by late Sri S.Balachandar’s way of playing the Veena and taken Sri Balachandar as his manaseega guru.

Sri Balachandar was a trend setter in Veena playing. He had introduced the gayaki style
Of playing in the veena. The true movement of the sahithyams without giving too much of the meetu sound was introduced by him [The veena music was usually played with lot of meetu sound heard then in those days].

Sri Balachandar observed that even though lot of gamakams used in carnatic music was able to be played by the gayaki style of playing, he could only listen to the gamakams but not the audience [In spite of having an external amplifier in front of the Veena].

Being an innovator, by trial and error he started using imported contact mike[Mostly used by Guitarists in Western music troupes].He was very happy that the intricate gamakams produced in the Veena were heard by the audience clearly when the contact mike was used.

Even though there was a lot of opposition in using contact mikes for playing in the concerts for the Veena by the conservatives and traditionalists, People have slowly accepted the use of the contact mikes for Veena. Now almost all veena artists have started using the contact mikes in their concerts. They must always thank late Sri Balachandar who had shown a very useful gadget to be used by them now.

Coming to the special aspects of playing the veena by Sri Balachandar, you must physically exert yourself to bring out;

1. The ‘Vallinum’ and ‘Mellinum’ at appropriate sancharams While playing Alapana and in playing the krithis.

2. To bring out the gamakams in one fret itself, you should be playing with confidence
and requires a lot of practice [To over come the limitations of range of the scale of notes
in one fret, Sri Balachandar had widened the finger board by nearly one inch].

3. To bring out the sancharams in mandra and adhi mandra stayis[which cannot be played in fret areas], Sri S.Balachandar used the fretless area near the mukam to bring out the beauty of listening the mandra and adhi mandra sancharms with long karvais.[He was
The innovator for such a playing in the fretless mukam area].

Sri Parthasarathy has learnt to play all these aspects of Balachandar’s Bani.
However, to earn for a living, he had followed the footstep of his father and joined the film world. With his astute knowledge in carnatic music absorbing the unique style of
Sri Balachandar’s Bani, and the perfect tuning method of the Veena [most problematic area for all Veena artists always a hand in the tuning knobs], Sri Parthasarathy became one of the most sought after Veena player in the film world for back ground music.

Naturally Sri Ilayaraja took Parthasarathy in his music orchestra.

Sri Parthasarathy was in Ilayaraja’s troupe for 20 years and then became a free lance Veena artist playing under different music directors in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam films.

He had a heart operation in July 2009 and was recuperating his health up to December 2009.

He gave a Veena recital for 90 minutes in Radio Sangeeth sammelan National programme with invited audience at the Chennai AIR in March 2010.

Recently he gave a Veena recital for 90 minutes under the late Sri S.Balachandar trust on 13.4.2010 at the P.S.High School Auditorium which was well appreciated by the entire
Rasikas who attended the concert.

Perhaps the ambiance of concert in memory of the late S.Balachander[His manaseega guru] made him play a spirited performance on that day and he overstretched himself giving discomfort for him for 10 days after the concert.

The download link of one song “Intha Soukyamu” in Kapi Ragam from the concert of his performance at the S.Balachandar trust concert on 13.04.2010 is given below for the enjoyment of the Rasikas. You can listen to many of S.Balachandar’s sancharams in the Alapana of Kapi.

Dear Rasikas,

I am having a scanned copy of the bio data of Sri R.Parthasarathy, Veena player.

I am not able to post it in the thread since the scanned copy is in PDF format.

I would request fellow rasikas to suggest as to how the scanned copy in PDF format
can be converted into a word document so that the Bio data can be posted in the thread.

I'm very much looking forward to this concert.

I don't know about your PDF: if it is text, you can selct, copy and paste it, but if it is indeed a scan, then you can only upload it like a picture.

26.06.2010. Veena concert of Sri R.Parthasarathy,
Mridangam; B.Ganapathyraman,
Ghatam; Dr.S.Karthik.

The concert was held at “Bridhidwani”, the venue of the legendary Veena vidwan
Sri Karaikudi Sambasiva Iyer’s home.

The concert was from 06.15 PM to 08.30 PM.

Sri Divyanand of Bredidhwani gave a welcome address giving a brief about Sri Parthasarathy’s contribution to music and the various awards he has received
[Already given in our thread]. And welcome address to the other artists and the Rasikas present for the concert.

1. Ananthamrithavarshini – Amirthavarshini .
2. Samagana Priye – Anandabairavi.
3. Nennarunchinanu – Malavi.
4. Govardhana Gireesam – Hindolam.
5. Nidhi Chala Sukhama.
6. Thani Avarthanam
7. Speech by Sri S.Nageswaran [On behalf of “Rasayana”].
8. Srichakra raja – Ragamaligai.
9. Thillana – Desh.
10. Pavamana – Mangalam.

The concert was excellent and the audience was enthralled by the Gayaki style of the Veena playing with lot of the sancharams as played by the late Sri S.Balachandar.

Thanam playing is the hallmark of any Veena concert and Sri Parthasarathy played
Thanams in the Ragas Anandabairavi, Hindolam and Kalyani. While playing the
Raga Alapana in Kalyani, he had done a wonderful Sruthi Bedam, playing the sancharams
In Mohanam.

In the Hindolam Raga Alapana, He played adhimandara sancharams bringing out
The wonderful melodies curves of Hindolam.

Thani Avarthanam played by Sri Ganapathyraman and Dr.S.Karthik was energetic
And presented with excellent korvais.

There was a melodies Desh Raga Alapana followed by the famous Lalgudi Jayaraman’s
Thillana in Desh.

The katcheri ended with the traditional Pavamana.

The reflections about the concert, Audio upload and perhaps Video upload all will follow.

This was a very remarkable concert. For me, at least (accepting that I am a novice), it was an opportunity to see a very different kind of veena playing. Beginning with the fact that Parthasarathy uses no kind of pick on any of the fingers of his right hand, relying entirely on his fingers, and extending to the very remarkable techniques of string pulling with the left hand. and using this technique even on the lowest string. It was a great experience to be sitting close to the stage, and to be able to observe the hands producing the sounds --- on a par with one occasion, last season, where I was able to sit, in the front row, just a few feet away fro Trichy Sankaran's right hand!

There were times when the exquisite focus on a note in alapana made me think of Hindustani rather than carnatic.

Perhaps somebody reading this without having heard the music might think that gimmicks were at play. They would be wrong. What was at play was using the capacity of the instrument to the greatest extent to produce wonderful classical music.

It was one of those occasions that reminds me how amazing carnatic music is: where else is such funky excitement combined with divine themes in a classical presentation?

Unfortunately, the concert was not that well attended (although the room was far from empty). I didn't register all the people present, but there did not seem to be a crowd from the Rasika's group. It's easy to blame the rain (I come from a country where, if rain stopped us, we would never do anything!) but one does wonder what is the point of organising concerts if people do not come.

On the other hand, one could say that even a few (;)) makes it worthwhile.

I hope Nageswaran will contribute a song list and some reflections on each song and the concert as a whole.. [EDIT: looks like he did, just as I was writing... will read now!]

Nick, it was interesting to read your observations - you are a keen reasika, with a sharp eye and an open mind. I enjoy reading your postings.

I hope to hear some audio files from this concert. I particularly want to hear the segments relating to your comment "What was at play was using the capacity of the instrument to the greatest extent to produce wonderful classical music"

I hope more reasikas attend this (rather, our) series of concerts.

REFLECTIONS ABOUT THE VEENA CONCERT OF SRI R.PARTHASARATHY.

Just when many of the forumites might have thought about attending the concert,
There was a continues heavy downpour of rain for more than one hour.
Since I was to be present at the concert, myself and my wife engaged an auto and fortunately crossed the Madly subway before it was inundated and reached the venue fully drenched.

Naturally many of the forumites could not come to the concert. Only my wife and I, Nick and his wife were the only attendees from the Rasayana group. The absence of
Kulkarni [Business commitment to visit Gujarat], Rajesh, Arvind, Raju mds,
Bharath, Manthra, Uday and many of the Chennai forumites was felt by the u/s very much.

But there were some distinguished guests, Sri V.S.Narasimhan, Sri Balasubramaniam of the Hindu news paper, Sri Swaminathan, the Hindu news paper music reviewer,
Sri Chandrasekar from the Musiri family, Sriram Parthasarathy , Sri Murali, Violinist
And the family members of Sri Parthasarathy were present.

We may get the review of the concert in next week Friday supplement in the Hindu paper.

The ambience of the Bredidhwani concert hall was inspiring with the Audio system permanently made ready. Subsequently the Video recording gentleman came up and video record settings were done.

The heavy downpour of rain was a precursor to the subsequent musical rain created by
Sri Parthasarathy. The opening of the concert with the Amirthavarshini song was very apt
followed by the song Govardhana Gireesam in Hindolam, where in Lord Sri Krishna
Protected the Gopies, Yadhavas and herds of cattle from the heavy downpour of rain in the forest by lifting the Govardhana Giri with his sundu viral [Sorry for not able to remember the English word].

I was not able to give the review of the concert as Sri Rajesh would have done it in mentioning the duration of the Alapana, Neraval, Krithi singing duration, and the duration of the swaras played.

I was carried away by the scintillating Alapanas ranging from the Mandra and adhi mamdra stayi to the Tara stayi in each ragam followed by the Thanam, Ktithi and swaraprastaras.

During the concert at late Sri S.Balachandar’s trust on 13.04.2010, Sri Parthasarathy played like a possessed man and overstreched himself in bringing the Sri Balachandar’s bani.
He was laid up for the next ten days [He could not stand the strain of playing in SB’s style
Due to his heart operation in June 2009.]. His family members have cautioned him not to strain himself in future concerts.

Usually while playing in the Mukham area [Fretless area] the artist has to physically to strain much to bring out the long karvais with gamakam.

To avoid the strain and at the same time to play the Mandra and Adhi mandra stayi
Sancharams, Sri Parthasarathy innovated a new method.

Normally while playing the gamakams or playing more of gamakam oriented sancharams in the same fret area, you normally pull the strings towards the outside [away from the body].

To bring the sancharams in the last string [Mandra stayi string], the string will go off the finger board if you pull more]. Sri Parthasarathy trained himself during the past one month to bring out the gamakam playing by pulling the last string towards him [unlike the normal practice].

In this way, he has played a wonderful Alapana of Hindolam with deep sonorous long
Sancharams with lot of gamakams.

It is a long way to explain the above aspects clearly.

Hopefully, if we were to get the Video copy, all the Rasikas can visually see, hear, enjoy and also see the efforts put in by Sri Parthasarathy to give one of the best concert by him.

By the way, in addition to enjoying the music of Sri Parthasarathy by me, I was enjoying how Mr. Nick was enjoying the whole concert sitting very close to the dais with his Mobile in Video record mode.

I did do some phone video, just a little, and haven't checked it yet. I don't hope for great results, but a memento at least.

It can be a bit of a strain sitting close to the artist, in case one's lapses in attention may be off-putting (or one's snoring may irritate them ;) ). During this, and the previous Rasayana concert of G Ravikiran, it was impossible to have any major lapses of attention.

It is such a shame that Cool was unable to be there: I hope you will ensure he gets a copy of the video.

Nageswaran sir, thanks for the review. Though i was free of business commitments that evening, the heavy downpour and that too exactly from 5-6 kept me away from this pro-gramme which i badly wanted to attend. And also i missed the opportunity of meeting madam Leela (Mrs.Parthasarathy, who was my english prof at school ). Anyway there is always a next time.

Sounds like a very good concer!.

Nageswaran,
As usual, you have gone to a lot of trouble to announce it, review it. Most of all, you and your wife braved the weather to be there for the event.

Nick,
You seem to be taking in a lot of concerts. Very nice that your dEvi was there too!
Somehow, RasikAs' RasAyanA with its mega-power love for music, because of circumstances and downpours ends up having just a handful for an audience. A shame, but it's the quality of the performance and audience which matter most, I suppose.

It goes in bursts... I sit in the house for three months, and then go to five or six concerts! Yes, Sushi was able to come this time and she enjoyed it.

We were never meant to be a big group. Things change with time, but I recall that one of the original intentions was for the intimate chamber/house concert to be the format.

I'm reminded of the biblical words... where two or three of you are gathered together. Hopefully, if those two or three seriously enjoy the program, and the other two (apart from me) are seriously knowledgeable rasikas able to appreciate the deep points, then we may send out artists away happy.

Shri. Parthasarathy and his musical credentials, this is the first time I actually heard him live. What an

experience it was!

I can imagine the Amrithavarshani, as I drenched in its effect, outside. I actually came inside when he

commenced AnandaBhairavi. I was immediately struck by the balalnce between melody and viruosity in his

music. I knew I was into a terrific experience.

The hindolam with the Athi Mandhara range of play, the different pulling style, with shades of Maulkauns... It

was a perfect heady blend for me.

Kalyani is not necessarily my most favoured raga (no specific reason). Partha succeeded in stirring me up

with it. I liked everything that I heard and experienced. While I was enjoying the delicately stretched pidis

with great attention to the anuswaras and the finishing points, he further perked my up with the 'bedam'.

I furiously SMSed by sister and brother-in-law to dash to the venue as I knew the music was just perfect for

their taste and enjoyment. But they were not lucky enough as me.

I am glad that I discovered a rare artist (for myself). I could sense the hardwork, dedication and the energy

and passion with which he approached his music. It goes on to strengthen the notion that much great

talent and art exists outside the popular carnatic stage scene.

Lastly, at the end of the concert, I acknowledged and thanked Shri. Parthasarathy for the excellent

experience. I requested him to play for us at the Musiri Music Chamber, which he promised to do sometime

soon. I am looking forward to that day!

Regards,
VC

In yesterday's friday review Swaminathan has covered this concert. Unfortunately since last week or so the hindu links are not available as they have cut the free service of viewing their friday reviews.

G. Swaminathan in the Hindu wrote:Small room space with furniture and loudspeakers, video recording man blocking the view and distractions by late entrants played havoc to the otherwise enjoyable recital.
Did others feel this too?

It was probably perfect only for the few of us in the "inner court" close to the stage.

I should not have liked to be behind the combination of pillars, speakers and camera that divided the room into two. Whilst they can do nothing about the pillars (without the building falling down!), they might consider the speaker positions.

They could also consider that a concert is a live event for the players and the audience. A video of the concert may be a wonderful thing for others, but the camera should never be allowed to obstruct living people!

Dear Rasikas,

It is true that it was raining cats and dogs on 26.06.2010 preventing even hard core Rasikas
Of Chennai in not able to attend the Veena concert of Sri R.Parthasarathy at Bradidthdwani.

I thought that all our Rasikas would have listened to my uploads [Audio].

But till now no Rasika have given their opinion in the thread.
[cm lover, arasi, rajeshnat, many others].

Please kindly listen to the songs played by Sri Parthasarathy and post your valuable comments at least now.
