bhAgESri, though a favorite rAgam of mine, somehow does not seem to be apt for the content of the song. VasantA has all the impact for such a moment.

The first time i heard the vasantha version i felt bored. Upon hearing arabhi i was ready to start leaping on stage like Hanuman...

It adds a lighter feel to the song. It shows Hanuman's elatedness.
He is happy no? coming back to rama with good news. Bagesri makes him so happy he seems to be leaping about!

Go to hummaa.com and in the search strip type in kanden. Make sure you select song in the left pulldown menu and carnatic in the next menu. Bombay Jayashri has sung it bAgEshrI.

I love the bhAgESrI version as well, but for very different reasons - I feel that bhAgESrI brings out the inherent pathos in the lyrics - while the announcement 'kaNDEn! kaNDEn! kaNDEn! sItaiyai kaNDEn rAghavA! is certainly a joyous declaration, and vasantA seems very nice and apt for that, the rest of the lyrics don't support the 'brightness' of vasantA - like for example when hanumAn describes her viraha - 'panikAla vArijam pOle niram pUSi, pagal oru yugamAga kazhittALE' ('with a complexion as wan as a pale water-lily, she felt each passing day to be as torturously long as an eon'), or, when she is driven to contemplate suicide - 'tanittuttan uyirtanait-tAn viDa maharASi SADum pozhudE' ('at the time when, desperate in her isolation, with a view to taking her life, she fashioned a noose from her long tresses, and tried to jump') etc....

Ravi,
Vous avez raison!
Another way to look at it: hanumAn is still breathless from bringing the news. He has brought wonderful tidings, and can't wait to give all of the news, knows Rama would like a rapid report, and the impetus of the news gives him momentum! Also, the 'kanDEn sItaiyai' instead of 'sItaiyaik kaNDAn' is etched in our memory.
And, it is from a drama. Such dramatic news should be conveyed with the impact of vasantA. Also to fully wake the audience up! And, I haven't seen it on a dance stage. A whole new ball game there...:)
