The writeup says: "When the Bharat Ratna was conferred upon Bhimsen-ji in January 2009, the goal of marking and comprehending the excellency of his music became a closer reality."
Wasn't aware that he was awarded the Bharat Ratna!

This was discussed in some detail in Rasikas.

Re: Pt Bhimsen Joshi
Cienu,
I had mixed feelings on reading this. While the piece examines father-son relationship (which can be complex) and also of their being musicians (more complex!), either Shrinivas Joshi dwelt too much on his own feelings or, even if it weren't the case, the interviewer did not know where exactly to go with it. More than the music part of it, the angst of 'to sing or not to sing' is echoed in the whole write up. I would have liked the interviewer steering the conversation more towards how father and son made music together, one teaching (I know, most musician fathers don't!), and the offspring listening and learning all the time.
Your grand mother was a grand exception, of course

On the other hand, Arasi, I think the interview beautifully brought out the inner struggles of the son of a living legend. There was such honesty to it! Somehow Hindustani musicians are able to bring a better feel for the artistic aspects even in an interview rather than merely sounding like they're giving their biodata! In turn they are also able to inspire the writers to think on different lines. I have read other articles by the same person who wrote this, but I would rate this as a class apart.arasi wrote:Cienu,

Re: Pt Bhimsen Joshi
As you say, some interviews can be considered blow ups of biodatas! However, I have come across some very interesting interviews of southern musicians too (one on one or as a group). What I meant was that while the father-son relationship as guru-student is relevant, Bhimsen being the icon that he is makes us want to know more about his role as a guru, that's all. Anyway, this isn't a book but just an interview. No need for me to be nitpicking, true!

This is truly story of the Legend and following his footsteps is hard; but Shrinivas has to be himself.

Recently I watched a Hindi film by name Ankahee. The music somposer is Jeyadev and it seems he bagged the best music director national award.Bhimsenji has sung a couple of songs and esp.the climax song was excellently rendered. The film has beautiful performances by Deepti Naval and Dr.Shreeram lagoo.

What's the carnatic equivalent to the Komal Rishabh Asavari raga in post 1 of this thread? Jayamanohari? Pt. Bhimsen just sparkles...
