I am an absolute fan of this ragam. I have heard the most mind-blowing version of Sri Mathrubhootham sung by Sri TM Krishna with Nagai & Trichy Sankaran in Music Season 2004. Quite a sensation.
I am shortly uploading a fantastic renedition by Sri Semmangudi Iyerval. Discussion on other compositions in this ragam is welcomed. Compositions by the experts can also be enumerated.

There is good malayalam film song sung by BMK ‘ nabhasil mukilinte.’

Radhakrishnan,
Thanks for enjoying the upload.
I am uploading a beautiful piece by Nedunurigaru uploaded sometime ago by Prashant. We should be very thankful to him since this was an AIR concert given by Nedunurigaru in Music season 2005. I have a very satisfying renedition of Saravanabhavaguhane by TVS, but I'd have to do it from home tonite.
For now, enjoy Nedunurigaru's pristine renedition.

I'm not particularly fond of Papanasam Sivan's composition, but here are a few from MIO.

mAthrubUteswara is same as thAymanavar ( thAyum Anavar) the Lord of malaikOttai in Tiruchi.
The legend associated with the deity goes as follows. A young vaisya lady who was an ardent devotee of the lord of malaikOttai was expecting a child. Her parents had to go to a nearby village on an urgent errand. They promised her that they will return before nightfall. However, due to heavy rains they could not do so. The young lady was staying alone and in the middle of the night lablour pains started. She prayed to Lord thAyumanavar fervently and was delighted to see her mother arrive despite the heavy rains. Her mother helped through with the child birth. Early in the morning, when the rains abated her mother went out on some pretext. When she returned shortly thereafter she seemed stunned by the sight of her daughter and her grand child and asked the lady how she went through thr child birth alone. The mother also said that she could not return earlier because of the rains. The daughter was surpried and told her mother that it was only because of her mother's soothing presence she could deliver the baby without any difficulty.
They then understood that it was Lord of MalaikOttai who had come to their house as the "mother" in time of need and hence he is called thAym Anavar.
Though the kannada krithi of MD is on this deity, I do not know if any religious significance is attached to it.

The significance of the song may not be religious, but it is felt that singing this song will ensure safe delivery with a healthy "tAyum, shEyum" at the end of labor. This was something that seemed to make lots of sense in days when infant and maternal mortality was skyhigh in India, and no definite cause could be attributed.
Just as an aside, the other significance of this temple in tiruchirApaLLI is that of the ambAL: she is 'sugandhi kuntalAmbAL' or 'maTTuvArkuzhali amman': she is the one whom Lord shiva was referring to in the nakkIran episode.

Ramnad Krishnan had special affinity to this raga. He has sung many songs in this raga including
Varnam
Ninnadenela neerajaksha
Shri mathrubootham
inthakante kaavalana
Saakethanikethana
Bhajare bhaja manasa
He has also rendered extensive alapanas in some concerts for the above pieces.
All the above songs are available with many rasikas. If some one could post them, it would be wonderful. We can enjoy all the facets of the raga through this versatile Vidwan.
Many of his concerts would have a piece in Kannada.

One of our vaggeyakara-members, Shri K. Ramaraj, has recently composed a beautiful kRti in kannaDa rAgam, "mAtA bhavAni SivE SaNkari". The first feature I noticed is the excellent incorporation of svarAkshara, which, for this sAhitya, could perhaps not have been better accomplished using any other rAgam. A beautiful composition overall, adding to the many by Shri Ramaraj already available on www.karnatik.com. A recording of Ramaraj Sir himself singing the kRti is provided below:

Thanks Ashwin! it is very thoughtful of you to post and draw our attention to Ramraj's composition. It has nice lyrical beauty as well as lovely melody.
Ramraj indeed is a gifted composer who is well versed in the art and science of music. His svara g~nAnam (as also linguistic felicity) is astounding as also his classicism as he has interacted with most of the greats in the past. We should use his expertise more effectively at this Forum.
Live long and keep contributing your best to CM !

Thank u very much CMLover sir for your exuberant encomiums.I , as an aged and physically handicapped person, would be only happy to share what little knowledge I am supposedly possessing , with discerning devotees of divine music before my departure
to the celestial world!!! , since this very thought is serving as an impetus to contribute to the music world with re-doubled vigor subject however to the unabated encouragement , and blessings I receive from friends like you

In his lec dem titled "The Musical Idea" Sriram Parasuram speaks very very highly of Mali's conception of bhajarE bhajamAnasa detailing how Mali takes the melodic line that mere mortals already struggle with -- Mali simply uses it like silly putty and creates an idea of kannaDA something altogether o ut of this world. Something unbelievable!coolkarni wrote:http://www.badongo.com/file/2123978

I have listened to Mali's version at some point but I cannot remember where I found it. I am wondering if it was in one of your inestimable treasures, Coolji.

will search for it today .
you could drop a mail through rasikas as well ( holds good for others trying to catch up on old stuff like this ) since I may miss some of these requests. It would be a good idea to keep me busy in the top half section , here , so that I dont stray into the lounge and get into trouble

There is not a whimper of any reference to mELA 28 from SSP in all of this discussion . So I am not alone!
How can a gamaka on 3 consecutive DDD be followed ever by N2?
And interestingly , there they specify SRGM is sung sometimes - allowing it. But the definition has it as Srgm as well. Thought it is smgm or sgm which is what the kriti utilizes and prayOga mentions.
