Bansuri and Carnatic Flute Innovations

Post by Vayoo Flute »

I have started a new series in my YTB channel called "Bansuri Innovations". Here I am expanding the meaning of bansuri to include the Carnatic flute. The following link is Episode 2 where I have provided a brief history of bansuri innovations:

The previous Episode 1 gives the reason for starting this series.

I would appreciate input from all you flute enthusiasts here. Thanks.

Wonderful vayooflute. Are you the same person who is the main speaker . Very crystal clear . I just finished hearing first introduction link.

Please also cover ks gopalakrishnan also . His few recordings especially an early 80 where he went on us tour with kanyakumari and guravayoor Dorai is a phenomenal experience.

Also if you are ok cover some flute drops that have come out as background music and few flute heavy interlude based songs, albums like how to name it especially with illayaraja will be great too. Just one or two will do.....

Take it slowly sir with right spacing

Thank you for your comments. Yes I am the one speaking.

This series is not about performers ar performances but more about innovations to the flute. If you know of any innovations that you think I should cover, I will be more than happy to do so.

I have developed a new bansuri that has a Western alto flute headjoint with a carbon fiber body with many more tone holes than the standard one. This bansuri is being presented in detail over a five-part series. Here is part 1:

In my latest episode of Bansuri Innovations, I am introducing a new fingering system. In the traditional Hindustani system, tone holes are controlled by 6 fingers - the pinky and thumb are used only for support. In my system, 9 fingers control tone holes - all the fingers except for the bottom hand thumb. There are also attachments to the bansuri to make this way of holding not only possible, but very comfortable. No more overstretching the fingers and causing hand and shoulder pains. As I explain, a note sounds much better (volume and tone) when it can be played with a completely open tone hole than one that has to be partially closed to arrive at a particular svara. This episode explains the reasons why I have developed this system. The link to the video is given below and all comments are welcome:
