Origin of Names of Raga

Post by Charukrishnaa Ganesh »

I have a doubt. This may sound silly.

The arohanam and avarohanam of Mohana Kalyani is S R2 G2 P D2 S [DOT] & S[DOT] N2 D2 P M2 G2 R2 S.

Why isn't Bilahari called as Mohana Sankarabaranam or some similar ragas ?

How did the ragas get its name?

Charukrishna Ganesh: YOU have stolen my long-pent-up thunder!! Actually I am attempting to address this topic by renaming Ragas so that it would be decipherable by laymen as well!!!

Examples:

Jaya manohari(Nee Bhakthi Bhagya Sudha,Yagnadulu are some of the popular krithis) should be named ABHOGISRIRANJANI to correspond with the Arohana and Avarohana(Sa Ree Ga Ma Dha Saa/Sa Ni Dha Ma Ga Ree Saa.(Jayamanohari does not have ANY of the charateristics of the various ragas ending in Manohari--starting with Manohari(Parithapamu),Devamanohari(Evarikai Avadharamu),EEsamanohari(Sree Gana natham),Saraswathimanohari(Enthaveduko),Kamalamanohari(Kanchadalaya Dakshi)

Likewise BILAHARI should be renamed Mohanasankarabharanam.

BHAIRAVI should be renamed Karahanata Bhairavi(because Arohanam has Chatusruthi Daivatam like in Karaharapriya and in the Avarohanam Suddha Dhaivatam like in Natabhairavi.

The REAL Paeadox lies in the fact that Venkatamakhi's Mela Karta nomenclature is pretty well structured and the raga names(with few exceptions like Thodi --also called HANUMATHODI to suit the nomenclature, or Shankarabharanam called Dhhera Sankarabharanma.) follow the KATAPAYADHI SANKHYAI(based on the Sanskrit Alphabets hierarchy). If one knows the nomenclture if one is challenged to name the Arohanam and Avaraohanam of a MELAKARTA RAGA,one can easily recite the swaras using the katapayadhi Technique. However Janya raga names follow absolutely no structure .

More such concoctions can be made!!

The Hindusthani musicians do it all the time.

There is no need to ape them.
