Theeradha Vilayattu Pillai

Post by pkrasika »

Hi,
Can you tell me what are the ragams in Theeradha Vilayattu Pillai and also the talam is eka talam, tisra gathi? Is this correct?

Regards,
PK

The verses that are usually sung use sindhubhairavi, khamAs, SaNmukhapriyA and mAND. The song actually has 5 more caraNAs I know some have sung it in k/cApu, others in t/Eka and maybe rUpaka tALA as well.

Just for my verification

I am following the one by Sudha Raghunathan in this video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmTXZaWuoWQ

This video one is tisra gathi, eka talam right?

Ragams:

Pallavi (Theeradha Vilayattu Pillai) - SinduBhairavi

Anupallavi (Thinna Pazham) - SinduBhairavi

Charanam - 1
Azhagulla Malar Kondu Vanden - Khamas

Charanam - 2
Pinnalai Pinnindru Izhupan - Shanmukhapriya

Charanam - 3
Pullankuzhal Kondu Varuvaan - Maand

Is the above correct?

Regards,
Padma

It is in khaNDa naDai, not tisra naDai.

Sorry but am not sure I understand how it is Khanda Nadai. I thought the talam goes tha ki ta..tha ki ta..so 3 beats. Hence I thought it was tisra gathi eka talam. Could you kindly explain?

It's actually t,t,, | t,t,, | t,t,, --- Thee, Ra,Da | Vi la ya , ttu | pil, lai, , ||

You can see the patterns of 5 everywhere, listen to the mridangam : t, tkt | t, tkt | t, kt or tkt t, | tkt t, | tkt t, | or tk t,t | tk t, t | tk t,t ||

There is a small difference between tisram and khandam although it looks like a beat followed by a longer beat, the two are not the same :

Tisram -- tt, | tt,| tt, (2nd beat is exactly 2x as long the 1st)
Khandam -- t,t,, | t,t,, (2nd beat is 1.5x as long the 1st)

ok thank you so much for the detailed explanation.

So, once again confirming, this is Khanda Jathi, Eka Talam, correct?

Also, are the ragams I have mentioned correct?

Regards.

I assume you meant to write Khanda Gathi, (chatusra jAthi )Eka Talam

As Srinath writes above, the sub beat tapping pattern of khanda is so close to trisra . I get it wrong occasionally as well which is so frustrating.

Hi friends

5 and 6 are close and hence the Khanda gathi could be easily mistaken for Double Tisra (6). If we observe the beat structure as given lucidly by Member SrinathK it goes in 5s.

Tala is generally Chatusra Eka Tala Khanda Gathi/ Some use Adhi Tala Khanda Gathi also. Some even use free flow khanda gathi.
but the structure of the verse is closer to 4 beats with 5 as sub-division for each beat and hence Chatusra Ekam could be appropriate.
Good Luck
