dhEnukA

Post by SrinathK »

Coming in right after tODi in the mElakarta scheme, dhEnukA (and all the other rAgAs in that group) almost look like what's left when tODi has single handedly consumed nearly all the phrases out in the field, including their share and then some - they're starving for attention.

As the 9th sampUrNa mElakarta, dhEnukA has the N3 instead of the N2 in tODi and it goes up and down the scale like so :
Aro : S R1 G2 M1 P D1 N3 S
Avaro : S N3 D1 P M1 G2 R1 S

The use of the N3 gives the rAgA a distinctly darker feel, and unlike tODi, dhEnukA tries to distinguish itself by using a plain G2 as far as possible (although it can be oscillated for the full range, in practice even the shakes tend to be minimal, with a full oscillation of the G2 being a very rare event) - this adds to the somber feeling. In fact, the rAgA is quite meditative in its nature.

I am pretty sure that if Thyagaraja hadn't composed "teliyalEru rAmA" in it, it might have gone unnoticed in the shadow of tODi. So here's the song, as relevant today (especially in the light of recent news) as ever.

And congratulations readers, for your patience, you have been rewarded with a free lesson : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXsWwoloPT0

dhEnukA has been given elaborate treatment on occasions too - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOeu1BHakuM

But other compositions do exist, yes. There is always S Rajam for such a time : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_K3hGQgzelk - Koteeswara Iyer's composition karuNai kaDalE

BMK also composed in it - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obaPDLzrwmE

And here's S Rajam singing it - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttuKWX4siOA

i have misplaced TRS mama dhenuka , i have had sleepless night after hearing that . Once many years back there was also one hyderabad brothers rocking with the same theliyeru rama . After 3 generations of SSI-TRS-HydBrothers , let us settle with the spectacular abhishek raghuram as the fourth generation dhenuka.I have personally heard abhi singing atleast twice the same teliyEru rAmA. dhenuka is in and out nadaswara pidi raga.

Abhishek raghurama singing a lovely dhEnukA with the flagship krithi teliyEru rAmA, the swaras were awesome.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOeu1BHakuM

Also dont miss trichur brothers with the same krithi with their awesome appa appA mohan running in that needed dhenukA speed
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4CH6lUC-Bo

Dhenuka = keep always nadaswara piDi of tOdi in mind as major axis AND in minor axis hear and there aadhu pAmbE vilayadu pAmbE magudi touch . :lol: :lol: :lol:

I will hopefully hunt the memorable Thiruvidaimarudhur Raaga Swaroopan(he is for the Gods). From TRS mama only the two branches of Trichur Brothers and Abhishek Raghuram came , you should all hear TRS for sure

Mahavidwan TRS used to render teliyaleru rama in his inimitable style. Here is one link. TRS with TRukmini and Karakudi Mani.

@1->
do we really have to bother about the rationale for the name of any ragam? in thamizh, we differentiate between 'kaaraNap peyar' and 'idukurRip peyar'. ....2) I dont think, you have to use a freshly killed cow, to create mrudhangam. The post would have been more valuable without the 'rant of preamble. If possib'e the OP can remove it.
( dhenukasuran..according to srimath bagavatham, was not a docile donkey but a ferocious asuran. ). ..(wiki) Bahīdhenuka (बहीधेनुक).—a great number of milch-cows..
Let me be honest here ....... We are talking rAgAs here and I was just wondering why someone came up with such a name for one.

@6->thanks. but it will be better to remove that rant totally. it is totally irrelevant.
========================
The kriti cited is one among the single-krithi for a ragam group of thyagaraja swami's compositions.
----------
the meaning of the krithi( ref: sri.V.Govindan) is against money-mad artistes.

Smt.MS rendition is there. ( I am unable to locate it )

Let me be honest here - cows are very very significant in this land of India - Krishna loves cows. We live on its milk (and everything else that can be made with milk) and just about every other part of it as well - truth is that the mridangam as we know it wouldn't exist without it. We consider it a goddess even. I personally find cows and especially the calves adorable and more capable of love than most of us. It's a sad reality that a perfect ahimsa is impossible in this world though...

The donkey on the other hand is considered to be the poster animal for poverty and slavery, bestowed with the title of "beast of burden", the word "Donkey"has become the most basic and universal insult in the book, and to add to poor animal's agony - Balarama and Krishna killed one with the name of this raga. So much for the silent hardworker...

So if someone knows some Sanskrit, kindly let me know if this rAgA is named to honour the cow or give the donkey a much needed honorable mention.

For god's sake, don't get into a debate on cow vs donkey, or the realities of cow killing and the politics just because of the above rant. :lol: We are talking rAgAs here and I was just wondering why someone came up with such a name for one.

Srinath, do you remember Ravikiran's impromptu dhEnukA pallavi at CLT? Such a wonderful dhEnukA that was.

After hearing all this, I am convinced that the calf dhEnukA has now grown into a beautiful cow.
