darbAri kAnaDA

Post by SrinathK »

This ancient rAgA as we all think we know it - is a hindustAni import and is a major rAgA in HM. Curiously however, the wiki says it seems to have actually originated in Carnatic music and brought into HM by Tansen! While others claim it was a creation of Tansen himself.

This article has a great description of the raga : https://anuradhamahesh.wordpress.com/ca ... -emperors/

Being organic as it is, you can't make a strict scale for it, it is quite non-linear in it's nature, but nevertheless :

Aro : N2 S R2 G2 M1 P D1 N2 S (With the RPG phrase also there)
Avaro : S D1 N2 P M1 P G2 M1 R2 S

Right off the bat, the slow meends on the G2 and the D1 is literally all it takes to identify this raga and is the most important feature of it. Other phrases like NNPM PNP G, or NNPM PS - are also key phrases in this rAgA. It's a full 3 octave rAgA.

This rAgA is actually a cousin of jOnpuri (which differs from this in the phrases and the gamakas). It also shares many phrases with CM's kAnaDA and can totally pass off for a D1 cousin of CM's kAnaDA. And kAnaDA itself has the scope to get into "darbAri' mode at times with its own G2.

While the rAgA gets center stage in HM, in CM it is mainly used for rAgamAlikas in pallavis and as a tail-ender in shlOkas / viruttams and the post main numbers. And it's quite harder to elaborate and sing brighas in than it looks - this rAgA is full of micro phrases that take their time to understand.

In CM, some of the most popular compositions in darbAri kAnaDa are :

gOvardhana giri dhara of nArAyaNa teertha - https://youtu.be/sY0gb2G7Dts?t=945 - a Ramnad Krishnan specialty
hari tum haro of meerAbAi - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9v38feFMQc - which MS Amma owned

There's also a Swati Tirunal number in this - dEvan kE pati indrA - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsM3OWiUPag

In HM, this rAgA was a favourite of Ustad Faiyaz khan and there are quite a few recordings of him elaborating it both short and very long in the style of the Agra Gharana.

Here's a good quality short one : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBaEQ5IAGes

And long : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUH-Xz9IH7Q
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkXpfTrshnY

And here's Rashid Khan at it : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8tT42jem50

One reason I'm sharing this is because a) The raga can indeed be elaborated for long and b)It is exactly the same in both HM and CM.

We'll look at the HM renditions more when I get the time to cover HM ragas - for now I'd like to cover the Carnatic Ocean.

SrinathK ->
hari tum haro of meerAbAi - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9v38feFMQc - which MS Amma owned
The link shows the correct song but wrong information by saregama.
It is not in the film 'Meera' ( hindi-1947).
It was a separate 78 RPM record and the tune was set by Piano Vaidhyanathan.

( In the above page, there is translation of this heart-rending bajan and poem reflecting the same sentiment by Barathy.
Also a fine pen-sketch by Gowri Ramnarayan on Piano Vaidyanathan.
