Radhakrishnan sir, here's an audio track of Shri Lalgudi himself playing the varnam.

Here is a nalinakanthi that is fit for the Gods.
I had to shred the krithi rendering to pieces and retain only the alapana
-but that is way it has been with me and these two artists.I always weep tears of frustration when they go bang bang with such talent.
Oh ! if only they would play all their musc in the mode that they have played this alapana..

The only occasion I have heard this varnam in vocal is when one of my friends sang it in a concert.
Here it is

Nalinakanthi happens to be one of MSG's favourites.Over the years I have collected several versions , but this one takes the cake...In the Company of Trichy Sankaran
Enjoy !!

I am still looking for an AIR rendering of the same -over 25 minutes - from the 70s. Anyone here has it ?

Coolkarni sir, I think the above is a concert held in Geneva with Sankaran. Another concert features a mind boggling Bhavanutha where he plays raga Bhoop before taking on Bhavanutha.

Coolkarni ji (or should we officially call you coolKARNA ji?)

Thanks for the mindblowing MSG nalinakanti... As often as Manavyala is played/sung - it was so refreshingly different and engaging - sometimes western and sometimes folky. Maybe a little bit Waltzy even at some points. Expert opinions?
Not to confuse threads - but i remember hearing MSG's sindubhairavi during a TVS concert (as a ragamalika for an RTP) - his sindhu bhairavi got a bigger applause than TVS's singing - it was so simple and folky - the essence of sindhu bhairavi.

You share the most spectacular of the gems in your infinite treasure chest... we are most fortunate to have the benevolence of your generousity.

Regarding MSG, yes he has been like that, hasn't he? In all the concerts where he accompanied Chembai, in swaraprastara, Chembai used to sing something, and he used to play differently. In many cases, Chembai used to repeat the swaraprastara that MSG played, not the other way round... has anyone else observed this? I remember hearing somewhere when he played this game with Ariyakudi, the veteran remarked curtly "I am not your Chembai to take what you play, so play the proper way".

mahesh.
yes it is from that concert.

dont want to digress here but cannot help.yes sindhubhairavi can be equally folksy.Ajoy chakraborthy ,in his recent concert at krishna gana sabha chennai sang the initial part which looked like a Christmas Carol and then all of a sudden he announced he would switch over to an Iranian version and We could hear reverberations of a distant Mullah announcing the daybreak in the latter half of the rendering.will put it up in a separate thread on Folk Vs Classical Music.

Srkris:

The incredible open-mindedness of CVB cannot be explained. He was a statesman - interested in developing the next generation. Many accompanists had gained under CVB primarily because of his encouragement. As CM-Lover asks for it, I would indeed be interested in an illustrative clip.

In the AIR concert that I have, I notice that both Chembai and MSG gently touch upon the Nishadam in the descending scale while rendering Mohanam. I am not too sure whether it a style but it did have a good impact while listening.

Coolk ji - I am taking the liberty of starting a separate sindhubhairavi thread to capture the Ajoy and many more joys as well! Hopefully someone will have MSG's sindhubhairavi! I seem to have loaned the cassette i had to someone who hasn't returned it :(

Much like MSG's Nalinakanti - here's a version of English Notes by Ganesh Kumaresh - i think this sounds more like a Waltz.

Tilak kamodh seems closely sounding to nalinakAnti : https://youtu.be/4H1eFe_CpLo?t=167

From construction it is more thoughtfully laid out. vakra sancAra makes sense when there are good gamakas to go with or in the case of HM their own dwelling on notes.

For what is merely a tune (and not a rAgA) that is an over sell! CM seems to have created a tune with a sancara just to make plain notes!
