Hello everyone!

I was wondering if one of you would be kind enough to post some information about LATHANGI ragam with regards to aspects such as restriction to when it is to be sung, what mood does it strike, lists of songs composed in this ragam, who has popularised, other information about this ragam (such as usage for compositions worship or any part of south India), its relation with Hindustani Music and uploading your collection in this ragam.

Many Thanks

Melakartha No. 63

Is quite a rakthi raagam.. also seems to give a flavour of valour or courage in the nava rasas.. Good to sing in the noon time..

Some popular compositions :

Pirava varam tharum - Papanasam Sivan
Marivere dhik evarru - Patnam Subramanya Iyer

A few others :

Diname sudhinamu - Thyagaraja [ some dispute this ]
Kai kooda venume kandha - Koteeswara Iyer [ among the 72 melakartha krithis on Murugan]
Sadhujana - Dikshitar [ can call it Dikshitar's lathangi]
Nemamutho nee padamulanu - Veena Kuppaiyer

I guess others may add more... I have written whatever I have learnt..

Famous Cine Song - AAdadha manamum undo - MGR [ Mannathi Mannan] sung by TMS and MLV

Interesting Janya Ragas..Thanks for the info..

btw, Skandamanorama's scale looks the same as hamsanadham.. I am aware that originally Hamsanadham had a 'd' ie.. shatsruthi dhaivatham as a Janya of Chithrambari, now that it is not used, the arohana and avarohana of skandamanorama becomes the same as hamsanadham..

??

Does anybody have the Varnam in Lathangi "Sri Kumara Sodaram" sung by any Vidwan? I forget the name of the composer. I remember having learnt the same from my teacher Smt. T.R. Balamani.

Here is the Lathangi Varnam I was talking to you about. The composer is Mysore Vasudevachar. Its in Adi Taalam

Pallavi : Sri Kumar Sodaram Sindoora Varna Lambodaram

Anupallavi: Gajaananam Mooshika Vaahanam Sakala Vidyaadi Poojitam

Charanam: Sri Gauri Shankara Sutam Bhajeham.

If I know how to upload a file and where, I can sing it and send it too. But I am still looking for a recording of any Vidwan singing it in a kutcheri.

Are you sure it is Mysore vAsudEvAcAr`s? For one it does not contain his mudre. AFAIK the only varNa on gaNapati he has composed is "vAraNAsyam praNamAmi" in kAnaDa. I do not remember coming across this piece in his compositions.

sumram99: Thanks for posting the text of the latAngi varNa.

A friend of mine sent me a bunch of varNas, in kannaDa script, by Mysore Vasudevachar. Though I cannot read the script I know that they include varNAs in the following rAgAs: nATa, hindOLa, rAmapriyA, kAmbhOji, dEvamanOhari, mukhAri, behAg, navarasakannaDa, sarasvati, bilahari, kadanakutUhala, mandAri, kAnaDA and kEdAragauLa. The one in nalinakAnti is missing.

resvap: If you are thinking of Vasudevachar's varNAs, I did email a couple of samples of notations to DRS but the script was not very legible. I will have to find someone to transliterate the text locally and post them when I get the time.

On a more serious note, Kiran! Im positive that you will be able to read the kannaDa script as telugu script is very similar to it.

I have had it checked. Tha latAngi varNa is not in the two volumes published by MV himself. It is not part of the vAsudEva kRti manjari- series of cassettes released by Sri. R.K.Padmanabha. As I mentioned earlier, it does not contain his mudre either.

Mysore Vasudevachariar has also composed Varnas in Ragas Saraswati and Hamsanandi. Are those in the R.K.Padmanabha releases as well?

MV has composed a varNa in saraswati-gati nIvani. I dont know of hamsAnadi varNa. It is not in MV`s 2 volumes or in the cassette series.

Thanks DRS.

You are correct. I made a mistake. I realised that the Hamsanandi Varnam is infact, not MV's but Venkatagiriyappa's. My apologies!

Here it is, the maestro's own composition ,"Thamra lochani, Lathangi" .I find it enthralling and highly creative with his innovative prayogams in the raga alapana and the intricate tapestry of swaras that he has woven magically. The Tabla accompanist, I suppose is maestro Zakir Hussein, and he has amazingly brought the krithi alive with his own rhythmic interpretation of the swaras. Enjoy.

Nikhil Bannerjis Link deleted since It has been reported to me that Rajan Parrikkar is of the opinion that I have stolen it from his site - a mail which also suggests that I am some kind of a shameless thief " who is at IT again ".
Sometimes I wonder if the only mistake I did in this process , was not having referred to the place from where this track had originated-Which Parrikkar says is his site .

For the records
My failure to do so has never been intentional-It is simply a result of the failure of my tagging such details from my early days of building my archive.
But since these acts do end up in excruciating pain for me , I have decided to hang up my boots .
I have had my share of doubts about operating in a forum where I do not know 99 % of the members personally and to keep doing this activity in such a forum-even with the good intentions of helping spread a good word or a tune-is bound to be a foolish task , from now on.

Someday, if there is a close knit group evolving , with all identities known and intentions clear , please do drop a line at chennairasika@gmail.com.I will be willing to be a part of it.

But as far as rasikas.org goes, my uploads will stop.

Srkris-DRS
Please do cancel my membership .That should give some confidence to Parrikkar.
And kindly note that I will not respond to mails from any one on these issues.

Thanks for the nice time I had all these years.
Good Bye and Good Luck !!
