Sangita Kala Acharya Professor Shri S. R. Janakiraman will be releasing a new book titled Essentials of Musicology in South Indian Music. This is a ten-chaptered comprehensive volume in English covering a very wide gamut of musicology dealing with the fundamentals of South Indian music, Raga systems, evolution of the Sruti and tonal systems, Gamakas, musical compositions, Talas, and the aspects of Manodharma and Kalpita Sangita. The topics are dealt with in a manner so as to emphasize their practical aspects and address some of the inconsistencies and misunderstandings of certain musical concepts. A 78-minute audio CD giving a practical introduction to each chapter accompanies the text. This book is bound to be very useful, not only to students at the graduate and post-graduate levels, but also to general readers and connoisseurs of music alike.

The book will be officially released on Friday, May 9, 2008 at the Music Academy Mini Hall, Music Academy, Chennai. The function will begin at 6pm. Several vidwans and scholars will be present and will receive copies of the book and offer their felicitations to Shri SRJ. This will be followed by a concert by disciples of Shri SRJ. All are welcome to attend - the full invitation and programme can be found at http://www.torontobrothers.com.

Dear Rasikas,

The book is being published by Karnatic Music Book Centre and will be immediately available for sale after May 9, 2008. Books are priced very nominally and include an audio CD. Copies will also be available at the book release function at a 10% discount and can also be obtained through Shri SRJ directly. The Karnatic Music Book Centre has a website (http://www.carnaticbooks.com/contact.html), but it has not yet been updated to reflect this new release. In the meantime, feel free to forward all your requests to us via our website www.torontobrothers.com (click on the contact form) specifying the number of copies and your detailed contact info, and we will gladly pass them on to Shri SRJ/KMBC.

I missed the bulk of the felicitation ceremony, but the book is making for an all-nighter...

Prof. SRJ's exquisite lakShaNa gIta in udayaravichandrikA, guNijanAdinuta (gurjari - MD), and an aNNamAchArya kRti in bauLi-rAmakriyA were among the high points of the post-function concert by Smt. Mangala Ravi, a senior student of Prof. SRJ.

The function started exactly by 18 17 hrs. few points noted are given below. bear with me for poor expression.
the invocation song was by anuradha sriram [ tonsured head ] composed by prof SRJ . It was in saraswathi , hemavathi and vachaspathi with ragalakshanas of these ragas as lyrics.
it begins with the word saraswathi.
The compere shd be mrs narasimhachary . she mentioned a quote from abhignanadha sakunthalam of kalidasa by sutra dhara as regards to the elite audience who were present.
mrs meenakshi janakiraman lighted the kuthu vilakku as per SRJ's wish as she was the spirit behind him.
welcome address by SRJ
Kalpakam swaminathan [86yrs] is known to him since 1945 and infact he was a student of her. TRS is known to him since1949 as he was class mate and were sitting together.
sriram parsuram was instrumental in the smooth conduct of the function by his meticulous planning and anuradha for the execution. Toranto bros [ sons in law? ] were helpful in bring out this treatise.
shri N murali [ hindu ]
Prof SRJ is one of the living musicologists. There is going to be a dearth of musicologists in future. Presently sriram parasuram and Ravikiran are the only younger musicologists.
the book was released by KS and the first copy was received by TRS.
PS Narayanasamy
He spoke in tamil. he cld see for the first time in the MA mini hall musicians as audience this shows the affection he has been commanding. His guru semmangudi mama used direct him to approach Tirupathi wala [ since SRJ worked in tirupthi university for quite some time, for any doubt in CM . he has a computer brain. as regards to vivadhi ragas only SRJ can explain clearly.

Sriram parasuram
there are 3 catagories
1 scholar 2 musicologist 3 Musician. Prof SRJ 3 in 1. This is a rare combination. with his poor vision from his childhood [ 3 1/2 yrs] [ visually impaired] his contributions to CM world is wonderful. Music and musicilogy go together and tributories to each other.
the copies were presented to the distinguished guests viz
smt vidhya shankar, chengleput ranganathan, M.P. vedavalli [ ?] , dr. M ramanathan, TVS,
N. Ramani , Dr. Pappu venugopal rao, cleveland sundaram , shri krishnasamy [?] , Ravikiran,
Dr. srivatsa and narasimha chari.

TRS
SRJ In music college was his class mate Musiri used to refer SRJ 's name for any clarification/doubts. in CM . prof prepared a 15 mits write up on Ponnaia pillai for musiri to deiver a speech in AIR. From bharatha shastra to the recent P sambamoorthy's book SRJ was thorough and his guru was tiger. he is a walking encyclopedia. Tiger used refer Ranjani as dumarga ragam as it is modern raga. Rama mathya was countered by Venkata mahin and a sizable portion of his work goes condemning his thories. In earlier days it was considered a fancy to compose songs in telugu. Even Patnam, poochi , mysore vasudevachar are not exceptions. eventhough krishna devaraya's mother tongue was thulu he composed few kritis in telugu . Anutha malyadha.
SRJ has written two books on music on telugu too. he is well versed in tamil, telugu, sanskrit and english
narasimhachari ' vote of thanks was very apt.
the function was concluded with a vocal concert by Mangalam ravi and party with the menu of SRJ's composition.

hey ashwin and rohin ...
its nice to know you two are here in this site...
you did some wonderful concerts last december ...nice music and paatanthara!
i still remember the Lecture Demonstration of Sangitha Kalacharya S.R.Janakiraman with you two and a wonderful violinist Miss. Athira krishna at the Parthasarathy Swamy Sabha..

It was a wonderful demonstration of the variations in Hindola Patterns....
infact you four did educate the listeners pretty well ...on such a wonderful topic...

If I remeber correctly , many stalwarts were eagerly listening to the Demonstration -P.B.Srinivas, P.Unnikrishnan, M.B.Vedavalli ,T.V.Vasan etc.....

The website mentions the price of the book as $9.20 - this translates to about Rs 440 at the current exchange rate of Rs 48. That's cheaper than the Rs 460 price in India! Amazing deal for such an invaluable book.
