UNFAILING GUIDANCE
(EXPERIENCES WITH JAGADGURU SRI CHANDRASHEKHARA BHARATI MAHASWAMIGAL)

A boy who was serving as a volunteer during the visit of the previous Acharya to a town on His way to the Kumbhabhishekam at Kalady was then too young to approach Him for any initiation. But he had been imbued with great respect and devotion and ever looked up to Him as a divine ideal. About 15 years after the passing away of the Acharya, he keenly felt that he had lost an opportunity of having an initiation from Him though he was in constant remembrance of Him.
One night he had a glorious dream in which the Acharya appeared before him and graciously initiated him into a mantra. His joy and gratitude knew no bounds. But when he woke up and tried to recollect the dream, he could not, in spite of his earnest efforts, recall the exact mantra that was given to him in the dream. This unfortunate forgetfulness grieved him a great deal. He told a friend of his of this dream. The friend suggested to him that as His Holiness Sri Chandrasekhara Bharati was camping only a few miles off he might meet Him and obtain His blessings in person as an appropriate substitute for the blessings he got from His predecessor in the dream. He accordingly went to His Holiness and detailed to him His dream experience. His Holiness very sympathetically listened and then directed the young man to come again the next morning.
When he went the next morning, His Holiness called him inside His room and gave him an initiation. In the course of the initiation the disciple realised with a pleasant shock that the mantra that he was now receiving from His Holiness was identical with the one which he got in the dream and could not recollect. He was convinced that, though the embodiments of the two Acharyas were different, they were really identical in spirit.
There have been many other instances in which the identity was patently obvious. His Holiness came to the seat only after His predecessor had passed away. He had no opportunities of knowing what all happened during the several tours of the latter to various parts of the country or even during His stay at Sringeri itself. There would have been innumerable persons who would have visited Him.
His Holiness however would sometimes recount graphically many incidents connected with the previous Acharyas as if he were an eyewitness to them. Even if we are not prepared to grant the identity of spirit between Them, we must certainly say that He had the power of intuition to vividly look into the past and into the future, beyond the ordinary ken of mind.

Sir,
Thank you.
I have also read many inspiring accounts of the great sage's kindness.
By the way HH Chandrasekhara Bharati attained mahasamadhi in 1952 if I am not mistaken.

Sringeri Acharya

Magnetic Personality
Once a young lawyer happened to visit Sringeri. Coming to Narasimhavanam, he went up to and told a disciple, "I came here for sight-seeing. I am an athiest and I am just curious to see what the Head of the Math is like. Can I see Him? However, as I have no respect for Sanyasis, I will neither remove my shirt nor prostrate before Him".
The disciple replied, "Acharyal will be giving Darshan in a few minutes. Anybody can go in. You can decide for yourself whether you want to go or not".
The disciple then went inside and in a few minutes, opened the door for people to enter for Darshan. The lawyer followed the group of devotees into the room but stood right at the back of the crowd. In a few moments, Acharyal"s eyes fell on him. Acharyal beckoned to him, holding a fruit in His hand. The lawyer stepped forward, abruptly prostrated and remained so. Some time elapsed, but the man did not show signs of getting up. Finally, Acharyal Himself told him to rise. The man got up with tears in his eyes and in a choked voice requested Acharyal to bless him. Acharyal gave him His blessings and also prasad. The man then went out.
The disciple emerged and closed the door. He found that the lawyer was the sole man in the verandah. The lawyer told the disciple that he was waiting for him, and queried, "Are you wondering why I behaved in this fashion?" The disciple answered, "No, I have witnessed such happenings very often!"

GOLDEN DAYS OF HIS HOLINESS SRI SRI ABINAVA VIDHYA THEERTHA MAHASWAMIGAL:

Hint of Mahasamadhi

About four months before Acharyal attained Mahasamadhi, a person visited a certain doctor's clinic as a patient. There, his eye fell on pictures of Sri Sharadambal, Jagadguru Sri Abhinava Vidyatheertha Mahaswamigal and Jagadguru Sri Bharathi Teertha Mahaswamigal, hung on a wall of the room. He was a person who had not even heard of Sringeri before, and was therefore not at all, ordinarily, in a position to recognize those in the pictures. Suddenly he exclaimed, "These are the same Ones whom I saw in the dream!" and was overcome by emotion! In answer to the doctor's question, he gave the following explanation.

"I had a dream some days ago, in which I saw a Goddess seated in a temple. On each side in front of Her was a Simhasanam (royal seat) on which were seated two saints wearing chore robes. I could see all the three of Them very clearly. Suddenly, the Mother Goddess rose from Her seat, walked forward towards the elder of the two sages, lifted Him, and walked back to Her seat carrying Him on Her waist! Those whom I saw so vividly in the dream are certainly These whose pictures you have hung here!"

In a few months, Acharyal shed His mortal coil.

Isn't he SrI candrasekhara sarasvati, although bhArati and sarasvati both refer to the goddess of learning and arts. Typically, IIRC, the pontiffs of the Sringeri mutt use bhArati.

The shloka Acharya quotes in the beginning is from Bhoka Champup the joint worl of Kalidasa and Bhoja Raja his patron. When they had 3 hours before their death they composed it instead wasting the time left out. Periyava quotes this story and says in the last two generations, anyone would have recognised the source of this shlokam as everyone were used to recite it in the morning.
Sringeri Acharya very succinctly and crisply quotes Bhaskara Raya and Bhagawan and also the shastras as only He can do.

Sringeri Acharya's speech abridged

We all know that Adi Shankara has established 4 mutts in 4 corners of India each one for one direction attaching one veda and one mahavakya to the respective mutts based on Madamnaya. These are called Amnaya mutts. Below are the details :

EAST WEST NORTH SOUTH
Poorvamnaya Paschinamnaya Utharamnaya Dhakshinamnaya
Puri -Goverdhan Mutt Dwaraka -Kalika mutt Badrinath - Jyothir mutt Sringeri -Sharadha mutt
Rig Veda Sama Veda Adarvana Veda Yajur Veda

Pagyam Brahma Thatvamasi Amayathma Brahma Aham Brahmamsi

There are four Vedas and each one is having one mahavakya signifying the Advaida philosophy. Mahavakya is the one which the guru gives mantropadesam to his successor.

Plans of Sri Shankara Bhagavatpada Acharya’s avatar

Yet another significant aspect of brilliant leadership is vision and versatility which Acharya Sri Shankara personified in no mean measure, well versed in all shastras, endowed with razor sharp intellect and being dedicated to spreading his message to all, Sri Shankara’s futuristic vision is apparent in the methods employed for propogating the splendor of truth. Direct contact with people, through interunity travel, culminating in the establishment of the four vibrant centres of spiritual learning to cover the entire country.

Establishing 4 maths in the four quadrants of our country, opening temples, organizing halls of education, this mighty master left nothing undone in maintaining what he achieved. Among the four Maths two of them in the East(Puri) and West(Dwaraka) were set up on the sea shore, while the Maths in the North(Badri) and South(Sringeri) were set up in the mountain regions. Sri Sureshwaracharya, who hailed from the north was placed in charge of the Math in the South, while Totaka from the South was sent to Badri in the North. He made it mandatory that the Nampootiris from Kerla should perform Pooja at Badri, while the Brahmins from Karnataka were assigned for Nepal. Likewise He ordained Maharashtra Brahmins to do Pujas at Rameshwaram. This shows what a broadmind He had when it came to leadership in matters of national interest.

Men of realization are of two classes. Some continue in their state of self absolution. They are charged with spirituality to their finger tips and they silently radiate spirituality to others.

Others choose to live in the world, but are not of the world; they love men and objects of the world, not in deed for themselves, but for the infinite in them. By living in their proximity, by speaking with them, one can understand more than what texts could provide.

Could any more effective resourceful and illuminating medium be visualized for achieving the goals envisaged by Sri Shankara?

Sri VidyaTeertha on Acharya Chandrasekara Bharathi

Acharyal on Guru Bhakti -

"Shortly after His Holiness Jagadguru Sri Chandrasekhara Bharati Mahaswamigal had attained Mahasamadhi, a lady from North India came to Sringeri and had Acharyal"s Darshan. She expressed some of her religious doubts to Him and also said that she had been unable to get satisfactory replies to them from the numerous scholars and mendicants she had approached. Acharyal gave His clarifications in His inimitable style. The lady joyfully stated that her doubts had been fully resolved.

Prompted by His innate egolessness and very great regard for His Guru, Acharyal said, "Had you come some time earlier, you could have had the holy Darshan of My Guru. You had to express your doubts to Me and hear My replies. But if you had just beheld My Guru, that would have been sufficient for the answers to have become known to you. Such was His greatness.""

Srungeri Periyava

Among the devotees who thronged for darshan of Jagadguru Chandrashekhara Bharathi Mahaswamiji, there were rich , poor, those seeking only spiritual realization, so on and so forth.
Lakhman Rao , was retired official of the Mysore state government. After he had retired at the age of 60, he did not celebrate his 60th birthday with pomp & gaiety. He came to Sringeri, offered prayers to Goddess Sharadamba & other deities. He offered fruits and prostrations to HH. He stood before HH with folded hands, when HH enquired, “ Are you not Lakshman Rao?”
“ Yes HH,” he replied, perplexed.
“You were a collector in Chamarajanagar.”
“Yes HH,” he replied.
He was the collector of Hardanahalli, which came under the purview of Chamarajanagar taluk. When HH had travelled from Chamarajanagar to Satymangala, HH had stayed for a day in Hardanahalli. Sri Rao had been in charge of making all the stay arrangements of HH. He had planned very meticulously & he was blessed by HH. He was pleasantly surprised that HH remembered him. HH enquired about his welfare & gave him the phalamantrakshata.
Sri Rao returned to Bangalore. He gave a portion of his money he had received, from his LIC policy to his wife & kept the remaining to himself. He informed his family that we would be going on a tour of religious places & return only after all the money was spent. He told them not to worry about him as he had the blessings of HH. Having completed the tour of South India, he went to Gaya, Kashi, Haridwar & finally came to Srinagar. He carefully counted the money and planned a stay in the boat house. Sri Rao felt the divine presence of Lord and also enjoyed the hospitality of the locals.
Finally Sri Rao reached Banagalore and his family was happy seeing him back safely. After a month he noticed a skin allergy on his legs as caused by ring worms. He tried all possible remedies but the infection only spread. One of the Drs thought this was due to heavy dairy diet in the northern part of India. Sri Rao started feeling disgusted.
He decided only option left now was to surrender to HH. He wrote a detailed letter to HH. HH was out of the contemplative state & was available to public at that time. HH relied Sri Rao of a speedy recovery. HH instructed Sri Rao to perform Ekavara Rudrabhishekam for a period of 48 days & part take in the teertham everyday. HH advised him to wear a bilva leaf used for the worship all the time. HH also advised him to continue with the medicines that were prescribed.
Sri Rao followed HH’s instructions judiciously. The nagging thought of the disease stopped bothering him. Within a month, he observed that hhis infection was receding & in a few days he was completely cured.
When devotees came to HH narrating their ailments, HH would say, “Every ailment has a medicine, or a mantra for it’s cure. In the present times, medicines have become a commodity for business. People who know about the curative powers of mantra are reducing.”
Shall we add- the blessing of Holy men, & the enlightened ones- to that list?

Srungeri Periyava

A devotee from Tamilnadu had come to Sringeri. He had the darshan of Goddess Sharadamba & came to seek the blessings of Jagadguru Chandrashekhara Bharathi Mahaswamiji. He prostrated with devotion & sat down.
HH: Did you travel directly from your home town or did you halt in between?
Devotee: I travelled directly to Sringeri
HH: you must have travelled from your home atleast the day before yesterday afternoon. You may have had food in your house before undertaking the journey. You may have given up the food that night. But, how did you manage the whole of yesterday?
Devotee: The train had halted for about 2 hours in Jolarpet junction. I had bath in the railway station & performed my Sandhyavandhana & Japa. I had time only to eat 2-3 plantains.
HH: I m happy that you did not give up your sandhyavandhana. But what did you do about your daily worship of the Lord?
Devotte: I seek your pardon for not having performed the pooja. Worship of the Lord is an elaborate affair. A railway station is the not the suitable place to open the pooja case containg the idols & do the pooja. I thus could not offer the pooja.
HH: You could have atleast offered worship in a brief manner?
Devotee: But, there was no time for a brief worship
HH: Why, did you not have time to plantains?
Devotee: How is it possible to worship the Lord in such a short time?
HH: After peeling off the skin of plantains, Could you not offer the same, to the idols you were carrying in your pooja case, as naivedyam, before partaking the same? Did you do that?
Devotee: No, I did not do that. The idols were in a case and the case for packed in a baf. How could I perform the naivedyam to the Lord without taking out the idols from the case?
HH: according to your understanding, the idols of the Gods, which were placed in a closed case, cannot hear the mantras you recite & cannot accept the naivedyam you offer. Is this your underdtanding of the omnipresent nature of the Lord?
Devotte: I had assumed that as they were in a closed case, they cannot hear the mantras I chant & could not see & accept the naivedyam I was offering. I now realize that my understanding was totally wrong.
HHL Even in the most adverse situations, there is enough opportunity for us to remember the Lord, and to worship him. Though it may not be possible to perform an elaborate pooja following all the prescriptions of the shastras, there is always ample opportunity to recollect with gratitude & sincerity, the compassion he has bestowed upon us & offer atleast a brief prayer. We wish that you bear this in mind always.
HH blessed the devotee with Phalamantrakshata.

Srungeri Periyava

A devotee prostrated before Jagadguru Chandrashekhara Bharathi Mahaswamiji & sought blessings. HH enquired, “What profession have you taken up to earn your livelihood?
Devotee: I do not have ancestral wealth. I m not well versed in vedas. I have learnt a few devotional songs & bhajans. I join bhajan groups & participate in singing of bhajans. There are number of such groups today & I easily find enough opportunities. The earning by singing thiese bhajans are enough for my survival.”
HH: You are earning your livelihood by satvic means. It is appreciable. But, it is necessary to change your mindset.
Devotee: what change required? Please let me know !

HH: When a person is walking along the street singing bhajans loudly, women or children come out of their house & offer rice as alms. His bag is full quickly & he would receive more than the quantity required meet his needs. Singing bhajans with devotion extolling divinities of the Lord is ennobling, & worshipful. But the loud singing of bhajans to attract people who would offer him a fistful or two of rice cannot be called nama sankirtana. If the people of the house do not come out, then they sing loudly to attract attention. He is not singing the bhajan so that Lord may hear him. His sole purpose is to get the alms.
As this bhajans are not addressed to the Lord, it will not reach him. It is wrong to use the most sacred songs for alms. It is gross misuse of the Lord’s images. Thus, you have to rid your thought that you are earning your livelihood by singing bhajans. You should cultivate devotion towards Lord, have full faith that God will take care of all your needs.

Do not develop a cause- Result relation between the two. If you do so, the bhajans will only serve the purpose of meeting your daily needs & would not help in spiritual progress. If you do not earn well on a particular day, because your efforts have not yielded “results”, you would lose faith in the “cause”- .i.e in singing the bhajans. You will develop an attitude that the Lord should be grateful to you for worshiping him & should immediately grant you wishes. Even while singing His glories, your mind will be calculating, whether, what He has provided is commiserate with your efforts. You may even conclude that he has not been grateful enough. Such thoughts ill pull you down, in your spiritual progress. You should thus cultivate a dispassionate attitude.

You should develop a firm faith that all that happens is according to His wish & is for your good. Do not entertain any doubt in this regard.
Don not degrade the Lord or the singing of His divine names to be means of earning your livelihood.
The devotee felt greatly blessed & indebted. HH had corrected his short sighted approach towards the bhajans.

Srungeri Acharyal Sri Vidya Theertha

Madurai G.S.Mani Iyer recalled the following incident that took place at Madurai during Acharyal`s first visit to the city.

I had just been to the Samadhi Temple of Sri.Sadasiva Brahmendraal at Nerur and I wanted to give the prasadam to His Holiness. But, I had my own hesitation. "Usually it`s the Jagadguru who gives prasadam to everyone. Will it be proper if a common man goes and offers Him some temple`s prasadam?" was my doubt. Somehow I made up my mind and went to have His darshan and after offering my prostration I took out the prasadam telling," I had been to Nerur and I have brought the prasadam for Acharyal....".
Acharyal`s face brightened and with an obvious joy on His face He said, " I am so happy to hear that, Mani “. As I stretched my hands to hand over the prasadam, His Holiness got up from His asana, and accepted the sacred prasadam with such humbleness and devotion that I learnt a lesson as to how one should conduct oneself as far as anything related to Ishwara is concerned.

A shareSrungeri Acharyal- Sri Vidyatheertha

The following incident was narrated by Ms.Lakshmi, Principal, Meenakshi College for Women, Chennai in a public function organised by Sri Vidya Theertha Foundation at Chennai a few years ago:-

During one of His visits to Chennai, Acharyal agreed to bless our college with a visit. Prior to that, a mutt official paid a visit to our college to inspect the arrangements made. It was originally planned that Acharyal would also accept Bhiksha vandana from the devotees besides giving darshan and hence this official wanted to find out in which room Acharyal would stay and accept the Bhiksha vandana. I took him to my personal room (the Principal's room) and showed it to him saying that this was where His Holiness would accept it. That official saw a human skeleton hung at a corner of the room and became upset at the sight of it. He then said in a tone of discontent that it was highly improper on my part to have chosen this place for Acharyal to stay as the presence of a skeleton there was a clear mark of impurity and also declared that His Holiness would never approve of it. He then left and subsequently, to my shock, the bhiksha vandana programme was cancelled by the organisers. It was intimated to me that Acharyal would visit my college, stay for sometime and leave. I just couldn't digest the thought that I had committed something seriously wrong by attempting to accommodate Acharyal in a place of great impurity.

As planned, Acharyal visited the college, blessed everyone and left. Subsequently, I had an opportunity to have His darshan and in the course of our conversation I mentioned about my disappointment and depression over what had happened. Acharyal said in a tone of surprise that He did not at all know about the original plan and the subsequent changes made in it. He then said with an overflowing maternal affection," Look, Lakshmi, We are not strangers and I know about your devotion to me. What is so wrong about a skeleton being there in your room? After all, there is a skeleton inside every one of us and what difference is it going to make if there is one outside in YOUR room! I don't mind such things. You have every right to come and approach Me directly for whatever you want from Me. If you had told Me about it earlier I would have definitely stayed there for the bhiksha vandanam". When I heard these words of comfort and assurance from my Guru I was literally in tears and all my confusions vanished instantly!

Jayanti of Sringeri Jagadguru Sri Chandrashekhara Bharati Mahaswamiji today.

"Once, Sri Chandrasekhara Bharati Swami had camped in Bangalore Sankara Mutt. The Acharya discoursed every day. On the day of His departure a devotee began to shed profuse tears even as he received the ‘mantrakshada’ from the Acharya.

Sri Acharya asked him the reason behind his tears and the devotee explained that it was due to his inability to bear the separation from the Acharya. He explained that the very thought that from the morrow he would not be able to see or listen to his Guru caused him grief; and, that he wondered if he (the devotee) would be alive to have the good fortune of having the Acharya’s darshan during his next visit. On hearing this, the Acharya asked, “Who is that Guru who gave you darshan daily and gave ‘upadesh’?”

And, said, “If, even after listening to me you grieve thus it only shows that my ‘upadesh’ and your hearing them have both been in vain. To restrict the Guru to this physical body made up of the five elements is verily ignorance. The term ‘Guru’ refers to a very high philosophy. It is beyond time and space and is the acting force behind our buddhi. If only you would understand the Guru tattva in the right perspective, your mind will not grieve. And you would have realized the truth that your Guru is ever with you, inseparable from you. There is no separation at all. Realize this now and do not grieve.”
"

Jagadguru Sri Abhinava Vidyatirtha Mahaswamigalu loved swimming and Yoga. He played with both as he was a master of both to a great extent.

Sri Vidyatheertha Foundation
Smt.Ramakoti Iyer, Chennai narrated the following incident to Sri Suresh Chander quoting her father as the source of this information.

My father ( late ) Krishnamurthy Iyer organised and supervised the elaborate arrangements in connection with Acharyal's tour in the cuddalore district of Tamilnadu. Acharyal was so pleased with his sincere services that He went to the extent of announcing in the public meeting that thereafter He was going to call my father not as Krishnamurthy but as Sowjanyamurthy to mark his friendliness and readiness to move with everybody and offer help.

One day, Acharyal sent for my father and upon his arrival said," I wish to have a bath in the sea this evening. Search for a silent and a lonely place on the beach. Don't inform anyone and only We two shall go". My father located a place as per Acharyal's instructions and in the evening accompanied His Holiness to that spot. That day being a new moon day, the waves were a bit large and my father who was a lot scary of the water stayed behind. Acharyal who entered the sea found out that my father was not following. He encouraged him to come into the waters and when my father neared His Holiness, His Holiness took him by hand and started walking deeper inside! As the level of the water started rising my father became very nervous. When the water level reached his neck Acharyal left my father's hand. Out of fear my father closed his eyes and when he slowly opened his eyes after sometime and looked at Acharyal's direction, he was stunned to see Acharyal floating on the surface in an erect, padmaasana posture! His eyes were closed and His Holiness was found to be in a state of deep meditation with the rays of the full moon falling on His most beautiful face adding to His Tejas. It was indeed a very rare sight for my father that he completely forgot the fact that he was neck deep inside the sea shivering with fear.

He started worshiping the great Guru with folded hands. After sometime, Acharyal's eyes opened and His body started moving down. Then Acharyal turned to my father and asked him with a smile if he was safe! He then said," Let's go back now". In the car Acharyal spoke much in praise of my father's sincere services and told him that He was extremely pleased.

My father could not at all understand the significance behind that rare experience provided to him in the sea that evening. However he realized that he was specially blessed by His Holiness.

When it come to Dharma our treatment is step-motherly.

GREAT EXPERIENCES WITH OUR JAGADGURU SRI SRI SRI CHANDRASEKARA BHARATI MAHASWAMIJI:
A devotee, who had received modern education and was carried away by modern school of thought, came to receive blessings from HH. Enquiring about him and his family, HH. enquired, "you come from a good family. Are you regularly performing sandhyA vandana and the gAyatrI japA?"
Surprised that HH. had known that he was not performing the spiritual practices laid out by the scriptures, he boldly replied that he was not performing them.
HH: "Why are you not performing them? Do you not have the time?"
D: "It is not the question of time. I do not know sanskrit, I cannot understand the meanings of the mantrAs. It is of no use if you chant these mantrAs without understanding their meaning. I have thus given up performing the sandhyA vandanam"
HH: "You can learn the meanings of the mantrAs and perform the sandhyAvandanam."
D: "There was nobody to teach us the meanings."
HH: "You could have learnt them after your upanayanam."
D: "I hail from a remote village. There were only a few priests who conducted pUjAs by practice. There was none who could explain the meanings of these mantrAs"
HH: "What is the profession you have taken up now?"
Relieved that the topic of the discussion had changed the devotee explained the nature of his profession.
HH: "What is your education qualification?"
D: "I have completed BA and LLB."
HH: "Where did you study?"
D: "I completed my primary education in my village. I took up secondary schooling in the district headquarters. I obtained my BA degree from Madras. I studied law in poona."
HH: "You have taken a lot of pains for you education. You have travelled a lot. Why did you have to travel so much? Was it not possible to complete your education in your village?"
D: "No, pUjya gurudEva, there is only a primary school in our village. There are n9o other educational institutions."
HH: "Why, could not the teachers who have specialised, in those special subjects, come to your village and teach you those subjects?"
D: "How is it possible pUjya gurudEv? is it ever possible for someone to come to our village and teach, when there areonly a handful of studentds like me in the village?"
HH: "Why should it not be possible? You expected that after you had learnt the sandhyAvandana, the scholars and priests had to come tour place of stay and teach you the meanings of the mantrAs. Is it not the case with the other subjects also?"
The devotee was taken aback that the subject had suddenly changed the track. He was surprised how the topic of the discussion had been veered around to the original topic.
With a smiling countenance HH continued. "The secular knowledge required for your professional life was not available in your village. You searched and identified areas where it was available. You went there and gained the knowledge that was required. But, you discontinued the sandhyAvandanam which is required for your spiritual progress. That too, for a small reason that you did not understand the meaning of the mantrAs. Have you ever made an attempt, to understand their meaning? Just as you struggled to obtain secular knowledge, did you evince any interest and put in any effort to learn their meanings? While you were ready to travel to far off places to gain secular knowledge, is it right to expect that scholars who know the meanings of the mantrAs should come to you on their own to teach you? This is not the right attitude."
"This body needs food to sustain life and for obtaining the energy. Food is most essential. We also need the food to be wholesome and nutritious - with milk, curd, ghee, vegetables, fruits, sweets and savouries. But, do we get such wholesome food everyday? Do we not many a times satisfy ourselves with a frugal meals of rice and some buttermilk, or even porridge? Similarly, understanding the meanings of the mantrAs and performing sandhyA vandanam is most desirable, like having a wholesome meal. But even if we do not know or understand the meanings, it is our duty to perform the sandhyA vandanam everyday. It is like our partaking of at least a frugal meal for our survival. Without a meal there is no energy. Our sense organs cannot function properly. It may gradually lead to death. So, start performing the sandhyA vandanam from today itself, in the best possible manner. The Lord will surely bless you."
HH blessed the devotee.
Om Sivaya Guruve Namaha.

Periyava and Sringeri Acharya

Hari Bol Jaya Sri Krishna !

Experiences with Maha Periyava: Mahima of Sringeri Sri Sharadambal

This happened several years ago. We decided on a yatra (pilgrimage) to the kshetras (holy places) in Karnataka with more than fifty devotees of us teaming up for the tour. We started our journey in a large tourist bus. It was our custom to first go to Kanchi, have darshan of Sri Maha Periyava and then continue our journey.

Around 4 o'clock in the afternoon of that day we stood up after prostrating to Maha Swamigal in SriMatham. Giving us His blessings, laughing and raising both His hands Swamigal asked, "You people have come as a large ghoshti... well, what's the matter?" Forthwith I elaborated on the details of our Karnataka Yatra to Swamigal.

Feeling happy He asked, raising His eyebrows, "What is the uddeshya (motive) about the first place to go?" I said, "It is our uddeshya, Periyava, that on reaching Mangalore, we would first go to Talakkaveri, do our sankalpa snanam (bath and prayer) there and then go to Sringeri. After that we have decided to have darshan at Subrahmanya, Dharmasthala, Udipi, Kollur Mukambika, Kateel Durga Parameswari... in this order."

Before I could finish Swamigal interrupted me. "Wait, wait... In the list you have mentioned, you have missed an important place..." Looking at us who were all standing with a question mark on our faces, and smiling, Periyava advised us, "What, you don't understand? I shall tell you... Horanadu kshetra! Mother is staying there as Annapurani, giving her anugraham. A very special place. Must have darshan!"

He continued: "You people do as I tell you now. First go to Sringeri kshetram from Mangalore. There, do your snanam in Tunga, first have Guru Darshan, get prasadam from them, then have darshan of Sharadambal and start from there (to other places). After this, you may go to the places in your order of preference. Let one thing be kept in mind though. Anyday you go to Sringeri, as far as possible, reach the place before saayarakshai (evening)."

All of us nodded our heads in affirmation, prostrated and got up. That Walking God ordered distribution of anugraha prasadam to us all. The driver and conductor of the bus were called and the prasadam given to them too. We started thereafter.

On the next morning, our journey from Bangalore to Mangalore. We stayed in a Kalyana Mandapam in Mangalore at night. On the morning the next day we got ready to move after taking bath. A man named Ramanathan who accompanied us came to me and said persuadingly, "We shall first go to Talakkaveri from here. After doing our sankalpa snanam there, why not go to Sringeri later?"

I did not agree to that. "Whatever uttaravu (direction) Kanchi Periyava has given, we should only follow that!", I said. It was not acceptable to them. "First we should go to Talakkaveri only!" they compelled me, as if having discussed it already among them. However much I pleaded with them, nobody was prepared to lend me ears.

The bus travelled towards Talakkaveri. Staying there for a day and after finishing our sankalpa snanam, we started our journey towards Sringeri. It was 8 o'clock in the night. Both the front tyres of the bus that was going on the mountain road to Sringeri got punctured and the bus stopped. It was pitch dark outside. In the light from a torch light, Driver and Conductor started working on removing the wheels with the punctured tyres and fixing the Stepney wheels in their place. Hunger pinched our stomach; our last meal was at noon in Bagamandala. Somehow the bus started moving at 10 o' clock. Suddenly it started drizzling. It was 11 o'clock and yet there was no sight of Sringeri. Only then we had the doubt whether we were going on the right road! As God-given, we sighted a man coming in the distance. We stopped the bus near him and inquired. He patted on his head and said, "This road leads to another place. 15 km before you should have turned on the road that branched to the right." It gave us a shock!

So the bus needed to be turned towards the direction we came. Driver got down and had a look. A narrow road, with valleys on both sides. Climbing onto his seat, Driver said with a falsely assured courage, "You people don't worry. I shall back up little by little with sharp turns on the steering wheel and somehow move the bus to an about turn!" and got on the task. Sitting with fear, we started chanting Rama Namam. Somehow having managed to turn the bus ninety degrees, Driver said in a loud voice, suddenly worried, "Sir, sir... Howevermuch I step on the brake, the bus starts slipping behind! Raise an even louder ghoshanam (proclammation) in the name of God... Only He should save us all now!" His words had the effect of dissolving tamarind inside our belly. We too felt the bus slipping behind. All of us with tears welling up in our eyes started wailing, "Sringeri Sharadambaa, save us Ma! Sringeri Maha Sannidhaname, save us! Kanchi Periyavaale, Ramachandra Murtiye, save us, save us...!"

Suddently the Driver said, "Sir, I have now taken my leg from the brake! The vehicle is not slipping behind! As if a hundred people are supporting it from behind, the vehicle stands intact! Now no worry at all. Shall turn the bus in a few moments" and started on his efforts. We did not stop the Nama ghoshanam.

Appada! (At last) the driver managed to turn the bus. All of us breathed a sigh of peace! It was exactly 12:00 hours midnight. Exactly at one-thirty we reached the entrance to Sringeri Samasthanam. A Ganapadigal who was standing at the entrance to receive us (it is my recollection that it was Nageswara Ganapadigal!) said with a laugh, "Vaango, vaango! You are all coming from Madras, right? First wash your hand and feet and come have some food. You would be hungry. Rice Uppuma and Bringal Gotsu are ready!"

"How do you know, Shastrigal that we are coming? We did not even write to you?" I asked him. He said laughing, "It is vastavam (true) that your coming will not be known to people who are like us. Maha Sannidhanam, deergha darshigal (with foresight) will be knowing everything, you see? It was only Maha Sannidhanam who called me around eleven o' clock and gave orders, 'To have darshan of Sharada, 54 Bhaktas from Madras are coming in a bus. They all come with great hunger! So ask our people to prepare Rice Uppuma and Gotsu and keep the food ready. In addition, for them to stay, arrange a large hall.' After arranging all that I have come to stand here and receive you all!" He sunk us in surprise.

Seeing the deergha darshanam and karuna (compassion) of SriSriSri Abhinava Vidyatheertha Swamigal, Adiyen (I) wondered. Tears rushed to my eyes. Seeing that Shastrigal said, "You are amazed at this thing... I am going to tell you another thing in the morning; you would then be really stunned!" and led us on. Hot Uppuma and Gotsu were served ready in 54 nuni (top) banana leaves. We ate the food filling up our stomach.

The next morning. Finishing our snanam in the Tunga River, we started to have darshan of Maha Sannidhanam SriSriSri Abhinava Vidyatheertha Swamigal. The Shastrigal we met last night was seen by us.

To him I asked joining my palms, "You said you would tell us some vishayam (news) in the morning. I pray that you please tell it now."

Shastrigal started talking: "Would have been around 12 o'clock last night. Sitting in his ekanta (private) room, Maha Sannidhanam was examining some Shastra books. I was sitting in the outer hall. Suddenly coming out, Maha Sannidhanam kept both his hand pressed hard to the wall and started murmuring some mantra. I too got up. From the posture of Maha Sannidhanam it seemed as if he was supporting the wall from falling. I did not understand anything. Five minutes later, taking his hands off the wall, Maha Sannidhanam came to me and said, 'You witnessed and wondered why I kept my hands against the wall in that pose and did some Japam. It is nothing else. The bus wherein came those people from Madras to have darshan of Sharadambal missed its way. Later when they realized the mistake and turned the bus, the brakes did not apply... bus started moving backwards on its own. The Bhaktas in them wailed, 'save us, save us!' calling aloud the name of Amma Sharada. So I supported the bus from slipping behind by resting my hands on the walls. Now everything is alright, and the bus is coming towards Sringeri! You go and make the arrangements as I told you', and went inside his room. I stood stunned!" Listening to this, all of us wept. We started to have darshan of that Walking Sharambal.

Looking at this Adiyen who prostrated and got up, SriSriSri Maha Sannidhanam said laughingly, "Should always listen to what the Mahaans say. And follow it. If you make a change in it everything that happens would be changed too. What, you understand?" With these words he did anugraha of prasadam. This Adiyen then realized that Maha Sannidhanam only informed in suchaka (by indicating) to the fact of our not following what Sri Kanchi Periyava ordered for us!

Dr. A.G. Ramesh of Chennai narrated the following incident

Once during one of Acharyal's visits to Madras, my father requested His Holiness to bless us with a visit to our house. His Holiness readily agreed. The date and the time of visit were fixed.

We planned to place Acharyal's asana at a particular spot near the wall in the hall. It so happened that the spot we chose was directly under a photograph of Sri. Sheerdi Sai Baba. My mother insisted that it be removed from there as it would not be appropriate to keep a Muslim's photo right above Acharyal's head! My father simply refused to remove that from there as he was a devotee of Sai Baba too!

There was a severe quarrel and I interfered asking them to arrive at an early conclusion as the time for His Holiness' visit was fast approaching. Finally, my father agreed to my mother's condition that the asana should not be directly under the photo. Accordingly we moved the asana to a distance.

Acharyal visited our house and entered the hall. On approaching the asana, He paused for a few seconds and asked me to move the asana to a place which was exactly the place we had originally planned for it! Now that the asana was moved (right under the photo of Baba) His Holiness sat on it!!! My father could not control his smile while my mother her uneasiness!

I was unable to control my surprise and mentioned to His Holiness about the quarrel on the place of the asana. His Holiness laughed. Then He looked at my mother and said, " I am a sanyasi. He (pointing at Sri Baba's photo) too is a sanyasi. So, where is the question of religion here for Sanyasis?"

Three Jnanis : A Jagadguru, a Bhakta, and an Avadhuta
Sri Gurubhyo Namaha

This is a recollection of the experiences of a Jnani Bhakta of Jagadguru Sri Abhinava Vidyatirtha Mahaswamiji, a Jnani and a Yogi, who adorned the Sringeri Peetham as the 35th Peethadhipati. The third Jnani, an Avadhoota (“avadhoota” refers to a peculiar class of Jnanis who are rather unorthodox in theirABHINAVA VIDYATIRTHA SWAMI SRINGERI ways) was the Jnani Bhakta’s Upadesha-Guru. This anecdote can possibly be found in parts in books on the Jagadguru published by the Vidyateertha foundation. This is a reproduction, therefore. I have only suppresed a few names (included that of the devotee-jnani), changed a few words into Sanskrit, and also added a few words in brackets [] to facilitate the context and clarity.

Sri Krishnarpanamastu,
Prasad

(Naga Panchami day (Aug 8, 2016), Vardhanti of Jagadguru Sri Vidhushekara Bharati Mahaswamiji)

_________

(Sri Bhakta [name suppressed, will refer to this person as Bhakta instead], is a rare type of person. Though engaged in his duties in the estates of ___, he remains unaffected, as a lotus leaf on water. Acharyal (Jagadguru Sri Abhinava Vidyatirtha Mahaswamiji) Himself has frequently said that Sri Bhakta is constantly centred on the Atman. He belongs to a family that has long connections with the Sringeri Math. For his part, he has been repeatedly carrying out many tasks to aid the Math. It is hoped that his contact with Acharyal, as described in the sequel , will engender spiritual propensities in the interested reader.)

My father and uncle were employed in the Math even in Paramacharyal’s (Jagadguru Sri Chandrashekara Bharati Mahaswamiji) time and we stayed at Vidyaranyapuram, near Sringeri. I was around nine years old when Acharyal was initiated into Sanyasa. I had the occasion to witness the ceremony. The sight of Acharyal seated motionless on the Vyakhyaana Simhasanam, with a Saligramam on His head, and Paramacharyal offering worship is still vivid in my mind’s eye.

I was studying at Bangalore when Acharyal came there for a couple of years for studying. When He returned to Sringeri, with a halt at Arisikere, I accompanied the camp. In 1939, I was present when the Kumbhabhishekam was performed at Bangalore Shankara Math. Both Paramacharyal and Acharyal graced the occasion after which Acharyal returned to Sringeri and Paramacharyal proceeded to Kalady.

After studies I took up employment. __ Agencies Ltd were the managing agents of ___ and I worked as a Manager. My headquarters were at Bangalore but I had to frequently go to the estates comprising 360 acres. I began to get dissatisfied with my conditions of work for I found the environment non-traditional. Dejected, I sought Acharyal’s advice. “Do not quit your job”, He instructed, “for if you do so now, you will stand to lose not only materially but also spiritually”. I abided by the suggestion. The management changed and the official climate improved to my satisfaction. In fact, to this day I am doing the same job, but of course, my designations have changed.

My father-in-law’s younger brother had built a house at Bangalore. He wanted a Lingam for his Puja and approached me. I left for Sringeri and placed the request before Acharyal. His Holiness went upstairs and brought two Lingams. One as a Spatika (crystal) Bana Lingam, while the other was a Narmada Lingam. He gave me the first and said, “Worship it. You will get Jnanam”. The second one was to be given to Sri _. What induced Acharyal to act as He did is unknown to me. I commenced daily worship of the Lingam. As for Sri _, he is doing fine in a materialistic sense.

Later, I felt an urge to have some traditional lessons from Acharyal. I went to Sringeri and made known my desire. Right away, His Holiness agreed and said that He would begin the lesson at 3’o clock in the afternoon. Some Sanyasis and Pandits also came for the classes . The text taken for exposition was Dakshinamurthy Stotram of Bhagavatpaadaal [Shankaracharya]. Having given a lucid explanation of the first verse, Acharyal decided to explain the second verse on the next day. Actually- He was having a sore throat. Still, He chose to teach me saying, “I have a sore throat. But you have come all the way from Bangalore for this. Hence I will teach”.

In the course of lessons, an aged Sanyasi by name ___ put some questions which were based on Tarka (the science of logic). Acharyal said, “These lessons are meant for Bhakta. Hence I am giving only those details that will benefit him. Tarka is not important for him. If you seek to understand the text from the standpoint of Tarka, then I am willing to explain that one point itself for 14 years giving a different interpretation on each day”.

This shows how Acharyal is always willing to cater to the requirements of the questioner. On the third day, Acharyal said, “This is enough. In fact what I taught you on the first day was itself sufficient for you. I took up the second verse on the subsequent day to ward off any possible feeling you may get that absence of continuation on the second day is inauspicious”.

My uncle, Sri ___, was in charge of the guest house. He told me of a peculiar person who had come there. I went into the said person’s room. This marked my contact with the Avaduta, Parabrahma. He was sitting unmindful of the body. He had an unkempt appearance, with long nails and a beard. On seeing me he said, “Bring Prasada”, I went and brought some idlis, gave them to him and said, “Namaste”. “Happy man”, he replied. “How about realisation [Atma jnaana]?”, I queried. “You will get it”, he remarked. “How?”, I persisted. “The mind will tell you”, was the poignant reply. The conversation ended there. I met Acharyal and reported what had transpired. He was silent for a while and gazed fixedly. “He is a Raja Yogi with Vedanta anubhava”, said Acharyal finally, with a tone of absolute certainty. A clearance had been given. Had not Acharyal told me earlier that by worshiping the Lingam that He gave me I would get Jnana? The means were now beginning to operate in full force.

Acharyal left for His first major South India tour. Prabrahma was at Sringeri at that time. Acharyal had left instructions to the Math officials to cater to his requirements. I went to Sringeri and met him again in May. On my prostrating before him, casually he said, “Prasada. Yellow water”. I brought some Sharbath from a hotel. “Happy man”, he said, accepting my offering. “What is meant by Atmaanusandhanam?”, I asked. “That is the Atma”, he answered, “Om is its Anusandhaanam. Say Om. When you repeat Om, all your nerves must vibrate from head to foot”. The dialogue ended there. I offered my salutations and returned.

Later, he initiated me to the Mahavaakyas [the important verses of the Upanishads which reveal the identity between the Atman and Brahman] and caused me to be centered on the Atman. Since then, I merely respond to stimuli but remain focused on the Atman.

When I narrated some details to His Holiness at Kutraalam, He said, “Brahma is a Atma-jnaani”. It takes a great sage to realise the worth of an Avadhuta. In fact, Brahma’s ways were so misunderstood that for many years he was confined to a lunatic asylum!

I have a habit of writing whatever comes to my mind to His Holiness. Sri __ once asked Acharyal, “Is no reply to be sent to his letters?”. “No”, responded Acharyal, “He has not sought one”. But whenever I have gone to have Darshanam after sending some epistles, He has remembered my writings. In fact, He has often cited parallel experiences corresponding to what I had detailed in my missives.

So powerful is Acharyal’s Atmanusandhaanam that it has a profound impact on those nearby, provided they suitably attune themselves. I vividly recall one such instance. I was accompanying Acharyal on His Kundapur camp. I was going in the pilot jeep when I noticed that Acharyal had ordered His car to stop. His Holiness asked me to sit in the front seat of His car and sent His attendant Mahabala, to the jeep. No conversation ensued. Acharyal lost Himself in the contemplation of the import of the Upanishads. The effect on me was extreme, to say the least.

sūtē ūkarayuvatiḥsutaśatamatyantasurbhagaṁ jhaṭiti |kariṇī cirāya sūtē sakalamahīpilalālitaṁ

Short Messages from Sringeri Jagadgurus:

Sringeri Jagadguru on Importance of Bhagavan Nama Japam from Mahabharatam/Vishnu Sahasranamam (Telugu):

"We should speak only the truth as far as possible in our lives. It is for this reason that our ancestors never used to speak much. In order to speak only the truth, they used to speak very limitedly. Kalidasa, while describing the line of kings in the Raghu dynasty, says of them: सत्याय मितभाषिणाम् – They who used to speak limitedly to protect truthfulness.

Therefore, even we should be prudent in speech and use the time available to utter the name of the Lord. Utterance of the Lord’s names is the loftiest of all Dharmas. It is suitable for everybody. When Dharmaraja asked Bheeshma, “Grandsire, please tell what is the noblest of all Dharmas”, this is what Bheeshma replied:

Meditating on the Lord with devotion and uttering His name is the highest of all Dharmas.

Why so? The other Dharmas require a lot of rules to be followed and involve financial and physical strain. Uttering the Lord’s name on the other hand, does not require any of these. It is extremely simple. That is why it is said:

It is not at all difficult to utter the Lord’s name. What is tough about uttering ‘Namah Shivaaya’? You cannot say anything is tough, as all the syllables are easy on the tongue. Similarly, you cannot say you are dumb, as you continue to speak unnecessary matters. We thus waste our invaluable time. This is called ‘Mahamoha’ (the great delusion) or ‘Aviveka’ (lack of wisdom) of humans. Even though there is such a simple way to make one’s life meaningful, people tend to waste their lives. Considering this trait, our predecessors have used the expression ‘Aho! (Alas!) Mohasya maahaatmyam (The power of delusion)‘.

Thus, with reference to Dharma, speaking the truth is Dharma and to ensure this, one has to speak prudently. One should spend the rest of the time meaningfully by chanting the Lord’s name. The third among the list of Dharmas is not coveting somebody else’s possession."

*A Historical & Defining Moment - New Tryst with Destiny*

*Swami Omkarananda* of Theni Veda Puri Ashram (Tamil Nadu) once conveyed to the writer that the 10th,11th & 12th Acharyals of Sringeri Sharada Peetham, beyond Their Divine Manifestations, occupy a position of Unique Historical Significance.

The 10th Acharyal was Jagadguru Srimad Vidya Tirtha Mahaswamigal also known as a Sage Vidyashankara, who still remains in Lambika Yoga in the Vidyashankarar Temple, built in Hoyshala Architecture, at Sringeri. Acharyal was the first to predict the occurrence of the Historical Event, the establishment of the Vijayanagara Empire, a few decades later.

The 11th Acharyal was Jagadguru Srimad Bharathi Thirtha Mahaswamigal, who always remained in Sringeri, immersed in Deep Contemplation and Tapas, praying for the Transition. Acharyal directed His Sishya ( His own elder brother in Pūrvashrama) Jagadguru Vidyaranya Mahaswamigal, the 12th Acharyal to travel extensively. Acharyal went to Kasi and even upto Badrikashram and had the Darshanam of Bhagavan Vyasa, who directed Vidyaranya Maharaj to go to South India, as a historical occurrence awaits the presence, participation and the Divine Interference of Acharyal . Vyasa Bhagavan Blessed Him with Extraordinary Powers, all of which are duly recorded.

Vidyaranya Maharaj came to South, where Harihara & Bukha met Acharyal and this Divine Association lead to the Establishment of the

Famous VIJAYANAGARA EMPIRE, which lasted for over 350 years.

Let's recollect. 10th Acharyal is Jagadguru Vidya Tirtha Mahaswamigal. 11th Acharyal was Jagadguru Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamigal and the 12th Acharyal was Jagadguru Vidyaranya Mahaswamigal. They formed the Divine Trio in

*Laying Down the Foundation and Establishment of the VIJAYANAGARA EMPIRE*

*Swami Omkarananda* continued to say, look at how history repeats and went on to say, the 35th, 36th and The Present Sannidanam of the Sringeri Sharada Peetam again form a Divine Trio.

Like the 10th Acharyal, 35th Acharyal was Jagadguru Srimad Abhinava Vidya Tirtha Mahaswamigal. Like the 11th Acharyal, 36th Acharyal is Jagadguru Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamigal

And therefore the present Sannidhanam, the Junior Acharyal though known as Jagadguru Sri Sri Vidhushekhara Bharati Swamigal, is none other than VIDYARANYA MAHARAJ.

What had happened yesterday stands ample testimony to this statement. Era of Kingdoms had given way to Democratic Institutions.

Parliament forms its Centre Core as The Decision Making Body. The Seat of Parliament also decides the Fate of the Nation.

Yesterday is Historic and the Government through the Prime Minister laid the Foundation Stone for the New Parliament.

Foundation of the Vijayanagara Empire happened during the Divine Reign of 11th & 12th Acharyal Srimad Bharati Tirtha & Vidyaranya Maharaj.

Yesterday's Foundation Ceremony happened during the Divine Period of the 36th Acharyal and His Junior Sishya, the Present Sannidhanam.

*Swami Omkarananda's prediction has come right*

Sannidhanam is nothing but a Divine Repeat of Vidyaranya Maharaj.

The Foundation Ceremony was performed by 6 Pandits from the Sringeri Sharada Peetham

*And what was placed as the Foundation was the Divine Shankhu & Navaratnas Blessed and Sent By The Acharyals*

History Repeats. It's a Historic Moment and A Divine Happening meant to Usher *A Great Golden Era for India, Indian Democracy and Indian Polity and in preserving, nurturing and passing on its Hoary Values, Traditions & Culture*

🔥 MEANING OF THE WORD JAGADGURU 🔥

— You will find here an interisting explanation given by H.H. Śrī Saccidânanda Śivābhinava Narasiṃha Bhāratī Mahāsvāmigal, 33rd Jagadguru of Śāradā Pīṭham:

« The word Jagadguru does not mean at all that I can claim any right as spiritual teacher over everybody in this vast world. It only means that, if anybody residing anywhere in the world earnestly seeks My spiritual guidance, I am bound to give it to him as far as it lies in My power.

A person may live in a distant country and yet be prepared to be guided by Me. Another may reside in the Mutt itself and be unwilling to abide by My advice. It is My duty to help the former and not the latter. To the former I am his Guru; to the latter I am not. The word therefore defines only My duty; it does not signify any right or jurisdiction over others who do not seek My guidance. »

— Excerpt from Sri Jnanananda Bharati,*** The saint of Sringeri***, Dakshinamnaya Sri Sharada Peetham, 3rd edition, Chennai, India, 2012.

Once, Acharyal (His Holiness Jagadguru Sri Abhinava Vidyatheertha Mahaswamigal) was scheduled to visit a town and stay in a devotee's house. The devotee's friend, who did not belong to the Brahmin community, was occupying one of the rooms in his house. Now that His Holiness was to visit his house, the devotee had a doubt if it would be in order if his friend continued to stay there. With great hesitation, the devotee conveyed his predicament to his friend who readily appreciated the situation and vacated the place. The devotee kept that room locked.
His Holiness visited the house and instead of entering the room meant for His stay, went around the house. When He saw the locked room, He came near it and said, "I shall stay in this room!" The devotee was surprised. Nonetheless, he saw to it that the room was prepared for Acharyal's stay.
When the devotee had Acharyal's darsana later in the day, His Holiness asked him, "Was anyone staying in this room before?" The devotee became concerned that he had committed a mistake in not informing Acharyal apriori about his friend who was the occupant of that room. The disciple hesitantly replied that his friend, who belonged to a different community, was staying there. He need not have worried at all for Acharyal compassionately said, "I want to see your friend. Where is he now?"
When the disciple's friend had the darsana of Acharyal, He asked him if he was practising any spiritual sadhana in that room. That gentleman politely replied, "No Swamiji, I merely chant Bhagavan's nama-japa repeatedly and, as such, don't know any spiritual sadhana. Nor do I feel I am competent to practise any sadhana."
Acharyal was pleased with his humility and said
"Performing nama-japa with sincerity is itself a great sadhana. While I was staying in your room, I could feel that the entire place was charged with a divine power and that is why I queried if you were doing any spiritual sadhana." Acharyal then blessed him.
