This is the problem of transcribing phonetic Tamil in Roman letters by those who do not know the language.
Phonetic Tamil is a curse for the Tamil language!

Phonetic Tamil is a curse for the Tamil language!

cml,
I beg to disagree. Tamil and Sanskrit are sister languages. While Sanskrit concentrated on literary usage, Tamil insisted on colloquial usage too. Therefore, Tamil had to drop the 'hard' consonants which cannot be pronounced in day-to-day speech. In any case the letters ங, ஞ, ந, ம are meant to soften the corresponding hard consonant. Accordingly, ங்க ஞச ந்த ம்ப would become ga ja da ba. For a Tamilian, there is no problem in understanding these. Only when mixing with other languages, particularly, which have adopted Sanskrit version, the problem would arise in transliteration.

The probable reason why Sanskrit adopted hard consonants is because, it wanted to create more space for words. Further, Sanskrit permitted all sorts of sandhis which a colloquial language cannot permit - otherwise the language would go out of usage - which is what exactly happened with Sanskrit. The present Hindi and other North Indian languages are the colloquial version of Sanskrit.

btw - Sanskrit is blamed for additional vowel ऋ. IMHO, this is a morph and vestige of Vedic language which probably permitted an intermediate vowel between अ and उ - but as this cannot be pronounced, it was added to a consonant - probably दृ (dR) - the consonant of which was got dropped. For example, दृक् (dRk) is the actual word and which later became ऋक् (Rk) - in the same way as 'प्रभु' (prabhu) has become 'रब्' (rab or rub) (this means 'God' in Punjabi language - same as prabhu.). IMHO दृषि (dRshi) has become ऋषि (Rshi).

Sorry for digressing into linguistics. But I wanted to express my annoyance at the words (curse) used about the Tamil language - which, along with Telugu is my Mother tongue.

I do not subscribe to the அங்கலாய்ப்பு of rsankar also in a different thread.

CML,
Please don't be averse to something which really is a boon. While it isn't perfect, it is very useful to type in languages for those who cannot read other scripts. If you pay attention while typing, 'madam' will be religion and maDam, a religious center, and so on .No need for confusion, if you see what I mean.
How it has helped us in writing down songs in different languages for all to read!

You have a very valid point there.
The roman transliteration is the only way of making CM songs available universally.
However the transliteration should be done very carefully. For example
matam should not become madam or maDam :}

There is no justification however posting in transliteration while addressing Tamil knowing public.
The Tamil scripts are beautiful and emotive and one should learn them to be called a Tamilian.
With the Unicode available in the computer there is no excuse posting in transliteration while addressing mainly Tamils.

VGV
I was not using any defamatory language. Sorry if you misunderstood.
You may remember EVR trying to change Tamil scripts which was a horror story!
Thank God he did not succeed with the DK/DMK govt support!

Received by mail from Shri Nageswaran...

Muralikrishna Venkatraman

This makes for interesting reading on Tamil Numerals. It seems there was no symbol for zero in Tamil, and there was no place value concept either.

Yes, it seems there was no place value concept in Tamil.

A few years back, I recorded the epigraphical inscriptions found in the local temples. And here is one of the inscriptions, dated 1839, found in a local temple:-

Even in the inscriptions done 100 years back, the same method has been used to record numbers in Tamil.

" Certain metals, such as silver, copper and copper alloys, are known to be far( more poisonous to bacteria than others, such as stainless steel and aluminium,) which is why they are used in mineral sanitizers for swimming pools and spas.

Many infections can be spread by doorknobs. Brass doorknobs disinfect themselves in about eight hours, while stainless steel and aluminium knobs never do. Unvarnished brass doorknobs therefore tend to be more sanitary than stainless or aluminium doorknobs. The effect is important in hospitals, and useful in any building

We in our home using the same technic... the vessel name is "Kasi Paanai"... "Kaasi Sombu"....for so many years now The same one Which my grand mother was using

Sridhar ranga,
All that our forefathers found out through experience are not wrong;
All that modern scientists found out through research are also not wrong.
Please see the following web page on 'Lead and Copper Usage' in drinking water -
http://www.epa.gov/leadcopperrule/

Unless there is a motive for the US Environmental Agency to declare so (and unless proved otherwise subsequently), the findings can be taken as valid by any average person. I am personally witness to use lead utensils in my house. No one now use lead utensils as it has been proved beyond doubt that lead is carcinogenic.

AFAIK, 'kAshu pAnai', made of brass, was in use in olden days to stash treasure. 'kAshi pAnai' is the colloquial term for this. One can find this in a museum; rare to find it elsewhere.

As for 'kAshi sombu', usually it is used to refer to the small copper pot of ganga jal.

sridhar_ranga:
I am no expert on the biochemical effects of minerals on human health. My friend who is an inteernational expert in that area is currently vacationing in India and I wll ask him on return.
Copper is an essential micronutrient. The deficiencies are uncommon. But then excess of copper intake does have deleterious health effects.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copper_in_health
Research is continuing in that area. Copper is an active element which reacts with other elements violently. Hence it may not be advisable to utilise pure copper vessels or utensils for food preparations or storing. The standard rule is that the storage system should be inert in respect of the material stored. Copper even reacts if left in the atmosphere and certainly with the dissolved materials in drinking water. Especially water has to be chlorinated to kill pathogenic bacteria. The dissolved chlorine will react with copper to produce copper chloride salts. These can overload the system and can have deleterious health effects. I am not sure about the long-term effects. Elemental copper does have antimicrobial effect.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antimicrob ... _of_copper
The effect on E coli the common pathogen is interesting. But I am not sure about the effect on virulent pathogens like cholera ot typhoid. Chlorination is a must which again will nullify the effects of elemental copper.
It is always safe to store drinking water in inert containers like plastics or stainless steel.

I will not accept popular articles in Vikatan or dinamalar as authoritative. Nor even a quotation from Rig Veda or Charaka samhita. Has IMC investigated the practices? Public health should be their primary concern. Water pollution is rampant in all parts of India...

Hence I said "caveat emptor"...
