I have heard that there are literature of the form of palindromes written in Sanskrit.

One such is the rAmakRSNa viloma kAvya - which when read forward relates to rAma's story (rAmAyaNa), and when read backward relates to kRSNa's story (from the mahAbhArata).

If someone has this text, please post it.

A palindrome should be the same word read forwards or backwards. Well known examples are Madam and Malayalam.

A word which forms another, but related, word, as per the example that you give must be a very, very rare and magical thing in any language!

Or the quote ascribed to Napolean: "Able was I ere I saw Elba":P

My dad recently gifted me a copy of Sumadhva vijayam by Sri Narayana Pandita (13th century, son of Sri Trivikrama Pandita). There is a beautiful sloka in that which goes like:

समानया यानमास मायया ततयायमा ।

नयासना नासयान यातनाललनातया ॥

While each quarter (pAda) is a palindrome, it is kind of a "spatial palindrome"

स मा न या या न मा स

मा य या त त या य मा

न या स ना ना स या न

या त ना ल ल ना त या

या त ना ल ल ना त या

न या स ना ना स या न

मा य या त त या य मा

स मा न या या न मा स

Reading left to right, top to bottom, right to left, bottom to top its the same. Kinda reminds Einsteins quip, "space looks same every which way". Ive put the meaning in http://vagartham.blogspot.com.

As cmlover mentioned, Sri Vedanta Desikar's pAduka sahasram contains incredible alankaras. For eg chaturanga turanga (from each letter goes like chess's horse movement not touching the same letter twice), shape of mrudanga etc.

In tamizh. a variation on Lakshman's: mOru pORumO? (enough of buttermilk?)
tEru varudE!: the chariot is coming!

CML,
Thanks for making my day, but see, this 'madam' tag keeps attaching itself to me like magnet! Wish I could shed it...

Now for the english ones: madam, I am Adam.
was it a rat I saw?

srkris,
My googling brought about several links. acharya.iitm.ac/linguistice/palindrome was the first one I saw. Hope I got it right.
All that I did was type in palindromes in sanskrit, and found several others.
By the way, the image of the vINA on the intro page is lovely for the navarAtri heralding in the season. Thanks!

I find it amusing that Malayalam counts as an English palindrome --- but I'm sure it does!

Vasudeva22,
Is it the Raghavayaadaveeyam you are referring to? This is a thirty verse poem which in the viloma gives another thirty; the former being Ramayana story and the latter with Paarijatha-apaharanam as the plot. It was composed by a certain VenkatAdhvari (of Vishwa-gunAdarsha-Champu fame).
The poem was so difficult to interpret, that his contemporaries could write commentaries; and named it 'Dushkara kavyam'. Upon their request the poet himself annotated the poem. The little flower Company had brought out a slim volume with this poem and the poet's own commentary.
Is the Raghava-pandaviyam some other such viloma-kavyam?? There are a few downloadable files at www.sanskritdocuments.org which, I think includes the rAmakRSNa viloma kAvya. It may save you the trouble of scanning...

p.s - Ramaswami dikshitar the musical wizard, father of Muthuswami Dikshitar has composed a Daru in Gangatarangini ragam(Mela 33) in which each phrase is a swara and Sahitya palindrome.
It is simply superb!

it begins - SArasa-nayana-sarasA ! SAra-tara-rata-rasA!!

I'm no expert in Sanskrit or Tamil, so don't know any palindromes in those languages. Here are two links I found:

What about Vikatakavi in Tamil? Though I wonder if the word originated in Sanskrit.

Vi-ka-ta-ka-vi = funny poet / jester / comedian. A title associated with Tenali Raman.
