The bard from Gujarat--Saint Narsi Mehta

Post by venkatakailasam »

The bard from Gujarat :

The true devotee has a sense of utter humility. Love and devotion, mercy and tenderness and humility and reverence—these are the qualities of a true Bhakta.
These very qualities were emphasized by the Saint Narsi Mehta in his more than 22,000 Kirthanas or Musical Compositions.
Narsi Mehta was born in Talaja Village in Junagadh in Saurashtra, Gujarat. He is called the ‘father of Gujarati poetry’. According to legend he once experienced a vision in which he saw Krishna dancing with the Gopis. This mystical experience turned the tide of his life.
His poetry was based on ‘Krishna Lila’. Some of his famous lyrics are Harmata, Mamerun, Shamalsha-no-Vivaha and Hundi. In his Sudama Charita, he revealed his ability of picturesque narration.

Narsi Mehta went and meditated before Shiva for seven days, whereupon Siva granted him darsan. Telling him, ‘Your bhakti delights me,’ Siva placed his hand on Narsi’s head, purified him, cleansed him of his sins and awakened his ‘sleeping speech.’ Narsi Mehta asked HIM for a boon. ‘O Lord, give me something agreeable to you and easy to attain: have pity on me!”
Gopanath then gave him the gift of fearlessness (abhaya).
Narsi Mehta defined the qualities of a True Vaishnava in his famous song in Gujarati ‘Vaishnava Janato’ liked by Mahatma Gandhi.
Vaishnava Janato
Vaishnava Janato theyney kahiyeh, Jeh peeda paravo janarey
Para duke upkar karey thoyeh, Mana abhimana na aaneyrey.
Sakala lokamam sahiney vandhey, Ninda na karey keyneerey
Vacha-kacha maha nichchalarageh, Tantan jananeey theyneerey.
Sama drishti ney trushna tyagi, Para stree kee jeyney mathare
Jihvah thakee asathya na boley, Para dhana nava janey haatharey.
Moha maya vyayeh nasi jeyney, Druda vairagya jeyna mana mamrey
Rama nasaram thali lakhi, Sakala theeratha theyna thana mamrey.
Vana loopee ney kapata rasithachey, Kama krodh nivaar yaarey
Paney nara samyo theynum thara sana karatham, Kula eko theyra dharymrey

You can listen to the song by Lataji here:

There was a tamil equivalent to the above song composed by Namakkal Ramalingam Pillai "Vanigan enbhavan" which is available with Lakshmanji. If any member has the audio, kindly share it.

I tried to post the song in tamil script but could not succeed. Here it is in some sort of code. You can copy it to MS Word and use a tamil font to be legible.

I have checked the three parts of the poems of Namakkal Kavignar. 'vaNigan enbavan' is not traceable.

I am not able to identify the font that has been used. If you can provide the link, it would be helpful.

You can use the Sailindira or Saisai or Sai Vrishin font.
