Music Academy Sangeethakalanidhi 2021

Post by hnbhagavan »

Dear Friends,

Presently the chances of holding Chennai December season concerts are only 50-50.Music Academy has not announced schedule for 2021. It is very sad that Sangeethakalanidhi for 2020 was not announced.
Even if the festival is held virtually,Sangeethakanidhi award should be awarded.
Already there are a number of Musicians in line for the award. The Academy should announce two names one for 2020 and the other for this year.

Why not someone who
  • Has fought Brahminism
  • Has promoted accompanists especially ladies vociferously
  • Has promoted Me Too voices
  • Has collected several lakhs of rupees through online concerts
  • Has helped artistes financially
  • Has striven to correct wrong renditions of Dikshitar
  • Has shared the stage with transgenders
  • Has promoted alternative themes from poets about exploitation
  • Has written books
  • Has made movies
  • Has sung in fishermen colonies
  • Has filed cases against "digital curbs"
  • Has written regularly about socio-political "problems"
  • Has a huge social media marketing setup
  • Has sung in synagogues, ruined forts and renovated schools
  • Has a political message in every song and concert.

Sachi R: Why don't you spell out the name of your choice for the award "Sangheetha Kalaa Nidhi , which is too obvious ?
Even as a simple "Carnatic singer" alone he is qualified. But will he be given ?

I am happy to see your enthusiasm for supporting the singer. The other side of the coin features a tiger.

Just my two cents: if Tansen has to receive an award today, it should be along the lines of "saṅgīta sāmrājya cakravarti" -his mastery over the swarasthānas was perfect - we know the story of the intensity of his rendition of dīpak which set the city of Mewar ablaze, thankfully doused in the nick of time with the intense rains ushered by the rendition of malhār by his wife and daughter(hence the two rāgas attributed to him).

Today, that traditional concept of perfection is probably impracticable today given the intense competition to survive. Individuals that receive awards are indeed meritous, but they need to strive to maintain that level of expertise and expectations accorded to them.

Kmrasika, so true!

A beginning should be made using real tanpuras or tamburas well tuned and providing a rich soundscape for the artistes to immerse themselves in.

Mostly no SK this year too. Third Sunday of July has come and gone; there was no meeting. No plans for a conference, so no President, so no SK. Limited 10 day virtual fest like last year, is the buzz...

The Music Academy should continue to award and have a simple function. So many deserving Vidwans are deprived of the title.

Yes, I don't feel it should be suspended forever (otherwise known as until covid doesn't go away). The duties during the MA season last but a week or two, whilst the honour is held, and recognised, for a lifetime.

Unfortunate.SangeethaKalanidhi should not be cancelled due to non live performance. It is a great injustice.

Last year Abhishek Raghuram was a notable absentee, i recollect putting up a post last year as to why abhi was not featured . This year also he is not there. I am surprised to see that Ranjani Gayatri are not featured. Atleast prior to pandemic Top 3 crowd pullers in random order would be Raga, Sanjay and Abhishek

Is KBMK in US , did he give his slot to new entry Palakkad Ramaprasad.

All said just 90 mins concert. They can actually break like 6 to 8 30 and 9 to 11 30 and still have the same duration , after all it is only virtual concert right . Why just 90 mins, i was thinking that they can go for atleast 2 hours. Certainly not much interest when it is just 90 mins concert (atleast to me) .

I heard thru grapevine that Academy is having commercial sponsorship struggles . They are managing to some how hold this year. I would love to hear if other sabhas like NGS,SKGS, Mudhra , Vanimahal,BGS , MFAC have concerts this year. I hope they will feature and not lose dec season . What a dampener was Covid for sure to all artists and most importantly the CM capital and dec season. Hope all is well from 2022.

IIRC, one reason given for not having awarded SK for last two years is that the SK is chairman of the conference, and there is no conference. This reasoning would suggest that there will be no retrospective awards.

Way back in 1971,Papanasam Sivan was awarded Sangeeth Kalanidhi .Sivan was very old and i think he is possibly the oldest SK or may be second oldest after palakkad raghu sir , Sivan passed away in 1973. I dont know since when lecdem series started . May be for the conference and sadas the awardee Sivan was perhaps not present.

I am not sure if artists like Rallepalli ananthakrishna sharma was there presiding each day of conference in 1974. I do know Vellore Ramabadran mama in 2004 did not preside every lecdem . As such it is just not mandatory for the awardee to preside over , he/she can always have other nominees do that.

The reason for not having SK is possibly there is no drive because of Covid or may be the artists will get poor marketing or academy can also get poor brand mileage because of near zero participation . I wish they stack 3 years of SK in 2022

This could potentially be a chicken-and-egg paradox!

Glad that the music academy has online concerts this year too. For once, they seem to have got it right. At least they do not want to be the cause of the spread. Better safe than sorry.

But I read that this year other Sabhas are doing a hybrid: offline and online. With the new Omicron now, people have to again be cautious, whether vaccinated or not.
