'Engum NiRai Naadhabrammam'
A fine song from 1940 film Sakunthalai.
The film is in public domain in youtube.
Saleem has prepared a presentation of the scene as a video clip.
Kalki had written a fine review of the scene.

This well-known song , composed by Gopaalakrushna Bharathy, is immortal due to Sri.Madurai MaNi Iyer's rendition.
-
Here is the rendition by Smt.M.S.Subbulakshmi . It is from a concert but Smt.Radha Viswanathan is not accompanying her. So the concert should have happened sometime around 1957 ( for about four years, Smt.Radha was not with Smt.MS , as she had moved to Ahmedabad after her marriage)

https://youtu.be/Zt_YHL0071k

uploaded by 'TheCarnaticEcstasy'

In more than one sense, the recording is very valuable and fine.
( Smt.MS would have been around 41 then, as during her Jaffna concert).
----------------------------
The Raagam is Jonpuri. ( Sri.GKB , the composer was a junior contemporary of Thyagaraja Swamy. )and it is said that he had met the Swamy in person.

MS should have sung this song in more concerts. She is the only singer who has sung the charanam Arpa suga vazhvil anandam konden which has got high philosophical meaning. I dont know why other musicians have omitted this charanam. Even the third charanam which has got the composers mudhra is also sung by some of the musicians.

REg Sudha Raghunathan version, thankfully ragam is not changed. All in Jonpuri only. One charanam first two lines mettu is changed. The HMV Raghu 's music interludes are very pleasant and soothing. The song has entered every rasikas heart for a century. No body should attempt to retune the song in another ragam.

DKP version is also very good. Never heard so far.

My golden one, don't ever go to the goldsmith's place
If he ever saw you, he would assay you, ask you to be
Weighed, to be taken to the shop and be sold, beware!

What has this old children's ditty have to do with this?

This clip is just adorable--I haven't heard TKG sing something like this in the only two live concerts that I have heard of him. He was older too then. His work with the Swathi Kritis is what I am aware of and admire.
How lively and lovely he sounds here!

Shankarank,
Just as I have said before, if layam comes like this, dancing its way with the sAhityam in sync--not just in the beat alone but in a dance with it--which is all one entity of experience, then I am as pleased as you are. Just that I do not know the quality of the metal by going through the rigors of testing its mettle. The expert cook produces a masterpiece of a dish. I just relish it. The measurement of ingredients and his expertise gone in to it are beyond my reach. I just adore what is produced. It's like swAmy puRappADu (the start of the festive procession of the Gods). You can't say which one in the crowd is more able to feel the spirit of the moment--the dyed in the wool bhakta sirOmaNi or a simple unlettered bhaktha. Music can easily be just like that--it's finest moments not being missed by the illiterate like the enlightened ones most of the time.

In the end, it's how we are moved by the arts is what really counts. You asked me, so I respond. Before you call it 'an essay' by an unseasoned rasikA. let me stop :):)

A rare rare find . 78 rpm record - sometime in mid-1940's
uploaded by 'serpent-emigre'
This raagamaalika tuned (by whom?) lyrics by aruNaachalakkavi, seems to have been very popular in pre-1950 years. The first to give the plate was MS S in 1935 itself, the NCV record must have been given around 1945 and the DKP record as title music in AVM Ramarajyam 1947.

PS : A funny anecdote on that last one: I heard a freshmen give a ruse for a last minute exam/assignment scramble. "Diamonds are made under pressure" he said. I tried the same line with my boss - when all of the department were doing a last minute scramble on a fire drill. Boss retorted : "that's thousand years, we don't have thousand years. You are giving me an American diamond"

"Matrimony is like a crop you tend with care, deeming it as wealth which has to be cultivated over a thousand years. Keeping that in mind, our go-between, please look for a good woman as a match", sang Vedanayakam Pillai.

Such a woman has no need for thousand year-old carbon to adorn her ear lobes. Imitation diamonds will suffice, if at all :)

As for the freshman, he was fresh. He can get away with it. Grown-up adults have, strangely enough, the Ayiram kAlathup payir tradition to keep in mind!

My, oh my! A whole lot of memories of infancy there! It was the very first Hindi movie for me--yet to be dubbed into tamizh and as a result, exotic. The story was familiar because of my grandmother's bed time stories and yet, Lava and Kusha were in focus here and they sang beautifully too! 'kahAn VaidEhi?' reverberated in the theater. It must have been my first Hindi movie in the same little theater where I had seen Laurel and Hardy who were fun to watch.

We don't see Shobhana Samarth (Seetha )in this scene. How beautiful she was! Prem Adib who plays Rama looks handsome too.

As for music, I see R. Sudarshanam's name along with Vyas's in the credit. Credit to him for keeping the momentum of the moment intact in the film--rendering the drama of it. Wonder who the lyricist was. You see his skill in keeping the order of words intact (janakapuriyai viTTE nAdan etc) to avoid too much discord in the lip movements. Later, we had many dubbed versions of movies from Hindi and Telugu, synchronization was almost impossible to achieve, but we got used to it in the 'dubbing age'!

The rAgA sounds a bit like karNa ranjani?Anyhow, it is ranjakam to the ears!

Yes, Arasi, It does bring back my old memories too. My father loved Tamil cinemas and would take me with him to some of them when we went to the city Trichinopoly. On the other hand, my mother never saw any movies before or after this one. It must have been my last year in High School, 1948 -49. I took my parents to the new movie theater five miles away, near my High School, in our bullock cart, by which I went to school every day. My mother couldn't believe her eyes to see a movie on the screen. Of course, it was the dubbed version in Tamil, a poor dubbing in my opinion. That was the only time we could convince her to go to a movie.

Rajesh,
Thank you for your interest (as always) in the lives of old folks and in learning about their growing up years. Even if we got round to it, I don't know where it can go on the forum. Even my translation Oy BhArathiyArE, which also had to do with music in a sort of way (with the poet's lyrics and his musical sensibility), I have no idea where it is. A non-member wanted to read it. Also the one I translated before that: an interview in Kalachuvadu journal (in 2008?) with vidwan Sanjay Subrahmanyan which by the way is all about music and a musician! I said to that person: where is Waldo? That is to say, Rasikas.org is replete with posts and, how do you find old stuff here? Again, those of us of a certain age and of lesser tech-skills are disadvantaged...

For now, I am happy translating short pieces--especially about vidwans and vidushis. Hope you have seen them all.

I thank you for your interest and your instant response--add precious time and hard work to it :)

I will send the few corrections as I see them (minor ones) by mail.

@Lakshman
Lakshman_ji has shared this rare record in jonpuri by Smt.MS. and has provided the lyrics also. It is by HMB.
-
@arasi madam will be able to throw some light on the theme of the composition. It seems to refer to some patron, obliquely. I am unable to relate it.

-

Perhaps, it is just on the Moon.. and not on any patron ?

Sorry, I bungled, and ended up with the following post which intrigues me as well: being quoted by myself :(

Mods,
This is all because you don't have an entrance test for one being qualified for becoming a member on the forum :) Then again, there aren't many of my kind roaming the earth any more (neanderthals)...

Lakshman,
What a rare find! the HanumAn of Rasikas.org that you are in its Lyrics realm, bringing thousands of lyrics to us, found this unheard one :) Wonder if Cienu is aware of it.

RSR,
I am sure others can clue in more than I can. Rajani? Shankarank, PB et al?

At the very beginning, yes, salutations to SivA. About a sudandiram (freedom)-craving person? Not the Mahatma. Not Chidambaram Pillai who was from Tirunelveli . ChOZha nADu, Well-known? Charka-spinning scholar? Musician?
U VE Swaminatha Iyer? I am lost...

Bright minds here might come up with the answer. Again, Cienu might know the history. This song is in Jonpuri.
Waiting for the answer!

Smt.MS sings the immortal song of Subramanya Barathy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCZbLFpTZJI
Mahakavi Subrahmanya Bharati's "Pozhudhu Pularndhadhu", from "Bharata Maata Thirupalliyezhucchi" (Wake up call or Suprabhatam to Bharata Maata) set to
Bauli, Kaapi and Malahari.
This recording has been sourced from a special programme broadcast on All India Radio on the occasion of Independence Day, on 15th August, 1980.

Kanchana Malai referred in the song is the mother of Madurai Meenakshi. The lyrics say that the mother is delighted at the sight of the wedding ritual of her daughter sitting on the swing with Sundareshwarar (Lord Shiva)
