I heard this unique veena recording last week. 'Incredible String bends' - Performed by maestro Veena R Parthasarathy. Accompanied by Srimushnam Raja Rao on the mirdangam and EM Subramaniam on the Ghatam

Repertoire:
Aanandanmrutha - Amruthavarshini
Samaganapriye- Anandhabairavi
Govardhanagireesham- Hindolam
Nenarunchina - Malavi
Nithi Chala Sukhama - Kalyani
Srichakra Raja - Ragamailka
Thillana - Desh

The concert started with Anandamruthavarshini, where the last sangathi on the pallavi was uniquely handled with 3-sthayi prayoga, and culminated in an excellent kalpanaswara delivery. The Hindolam raga alapana started on the anumanthra sthayi with a lot of string bending - crossing 3-4 swaras in a fret, which Im not sure how it could have been done; because pulling even very little on anumanthra string causes it to go out of the frets. Nenarunchi was a brisk pre-main piece, which was followed by the main item 'Nithi chala', which was delivered with a compact neraval, beautiful sarvalaghu phrases, and peppered with panchama-varja and sadjama-varja phrases, which brought out the beauty of Kalyani. Desh thillana brought out the original flavour of Lalgudi Jayaraman's creation.
