Gangadheeswaram-album of D K Jayaraman(Music Academy 1982)

Post by sivapriya »

Gangadheeswaram, a 3 cd album , produced and marketed by Swathi Soft Solutions, under the Sanskriti Series, features a live concert by Sangita Kalanidhi Sri.D.K.Jayaraman at the Music Academy in December 1982.He is supported on the violin by Sri. M.Chandrasekaran and on the mrudangam by Sri. Trichy Sankaran. The details on the back cover says that this was got from the private collections of the DKJ family and is surely a cherished collection for rasikas.

DKJ was an artist who was known for his crisp, lively and well crafted presentation. He has popularised songs by Tanjavur Sankara Iyer, apart from masters like Papanasam Sivan , Muthiah Bhagavathar and Muthuswamy Dikshitar.

The 3 cd pack contains songs that are specifically popular DKJ specials like Nee Bhakti ( Tyagaraja- jayamanohari), Sri Kanchi Nayike (Annasami Sastri -Asaveri), Ika Naina(Pushpalatika-Tirupai Narayanaswamy) , Ramanatham( Dikshitar-Pantuvarali),Mahadeva Siva Shambo(Tanjavur Sankara Iyer-Revati), Pahi Sri ( Shyama Sastri-Anandabhairavi), Venugana Ramana (OVK-Todi), Orajoopujoochedi nyayamaa(Tyagaraja- Kannadagowla),Rama Bana(Tyagaraja- Saveri), Sivaperumankripai(Suruti-Papanasam Sivan), Gangadheeswaram(Sindubhairavi- Tanjavur Sankara Iyer), Tillana( MohanaKalyani-LGJ).

The third disc has a crisp and fine Sankarabharanam RTP - (Samaanamaa, Sabhaapathe, Sadaashivaa- sakalaulagirkkum nee). The disc does not mention the Tala for this. However from analysing the RTP it "seems" like it is set to Khanda Triputa, with an atheetha eduppu at Sari and arudhi kaarvai of seven. It would be ideal if the facts of the tala structure could have been gathered from the artist or his disciples, and printed on the cover, as the crux of an RTP is its tala structure.

This is a brilliant and a very lively concert, wherein every song has the unique DKJ stamp on it. The title is apt ,as the song Gangadheeswaram and DKJ share an inseparable oneness! The solid support rendered by both Chandrasekaran and Trichy Sankaran makes for the elevated appeal of the concert .

The 3 cd album is priced at Rs.450/ and can also be bought online from http://www.kalakendra.com

Sorry, for the error! oversight.

Now I have corrected two mistakes.

Ika Naina ( Pushpalatika - Tirupati Narayanaswamy), Sri Kanchi Nayike ( Asaveri - Annasami sastri)
