Dwijavanthi - A soulful raga

Post by kathakali »

Dwijavanthi: A soulful raga, and sometime I feel it's overlooked one in the midst of other highly respected ragas .
Its often been heard that this raga is used to its best in kathakali music, and there was a related story where the great Semmangudi had invited eminent kathakali singer Kalamandalam Gangadharan to sing one kathakali padam in this raga, to show depth of Bhava associated with this raga.

The most famous (padam) of this raga in Kathakali is 'Marimaankanni' from nalacharitham. the underlying bhava is Virah (The separation)
where King Nala feels the pain of separation form his wife Damayanthi..

listen to this, (same song , sung by different artists)

The way it is sung here, some resemblance to Dwijavanthi of MD ( as in Akhilandeswari ) is there but also it reminded me quite a bit of Jhinjhoti ( Senchurutti ). Are Jhinjhoti and Dwijavanthi related somehow?

Sri Muthusamy Deekshitar imported Hidustani Raga Jai Jai wanthi and composed a krithi Akilandeswari .he named as dwi(two)jai wanthi (dwjawanthi)
he has also composed another krithi in praise of Lord Guruvayoor appan "chetasri Balakrishnam".

Dwajawanthi and chenchurti (jenchoti)are different. Sahana is closely related to dwijawanthi and while sining alapana you can hear some shana pid.

this Raga is a best remedy for high Blood pressure and stress. Five min hearing of this Raga reduces stress.
