Meenakumari The Sad Angel

Post by venkatakailasam »

Meena was born in a muslim family in 1932. Her Father was Ali Baksh. Mother was Iqbal Begum. Her father was interesed in acting and he tried to introduce this daughter into film at the age of just 7.She protested it.
She got the prestigious Filmfare award in 1953.
Though so beautiful, talented and money maker, her personal life life was so sad.In 1952,itself, she fell in love with Kamal Amrohi, who was an already married ,talented film directer. They married, but Meena did not get a child. there are sayings that Kamal did not permit her to conceive. From 1962,she was succumbed to alcohols and soon became a heavy drunker to forget her worries. That developed many diseases in her body and finally she surrendered herself to the hands of death on 31st March 1972, just three weeks after the release of her last film –Pakeeza.
Meena was a good poetess in Urdu. She has scribbled all her sorrows in her poems and they are immortal. One of her poems, rendered into English, reads thus-
'Making love o friend, I went to such extreme
That I forgot where i had been to!'
