R.P. Shravan is a familiar name in the household because of his winning the title in the Star Vijay Super Singer reality show in 2010. I happened to see some of his recent videos in the Indian idol season nine held in 2017 and he was incredible with his Hindi numbers amazing the Hindustani musicians present in the show. A disciple of Delhi Sunderrajan, his voice with its amazing range, diction and breadth control, has kept him in good stead across genres. Last year I heard his Carnatic concert in the season and was much impressed with his sincerity and dedication. Hence I was looking forward for his concert and was greatly impressed by his concert in Arkay Convention Centre. Thanks to Arkay Ramakrishnan Sir for identifying really talented youngsters and offering a platform for them.

Shravan gave a rousing start to his concert with the varnam in Saranga. In this concert he chose Anandabhairavi, Dharmavati and Thodi for detailed exploration. The alapanas were methodical- were built brick by brick for culminating in the great edifice. The alapana of Anandabhairavi had many memorable sancharas and the kalaparamanam was matching with the mood of the monumental composition of Syama Sastry. The keertanam was rendered in a speed to communicate the plea of the composer to Meenakshi. This kriti is one among the Meenakshi Navarathnamalika kritis of Syama Sastry. There was novelty in the various nadais he used to present the phrase Nataavana kuthoohala nee vega. I have never heard this from any other musician.

Dharmavati was delicately handled to display the multi hues of the ragam and the kriti of Deekshitar was presented and neraval on the lines Paramjothi vikasini Paramathma Prakasini was a display of his manodharmam and musical ideas. Then he hit his stride with the stately Tiruppavai for the day in Sree ragam. The lilting kriti of Swati Tirunal in the ragam Bhushavali infused a change in the tempo.

Thodi was the ragam chosen for the main suite and Shravan offered an alluring interpretation of Thodi traversing on the familiar sancharams as well as a few innovative sancharams focused on the jeeva swaras of the ragam never meandering on the swarams but retaining the aesthetics high. The well rounded gamakams and lightning brighas were judiciously employed to embellish the raga swaroopa. With palpable involvement, he handled the masterpiece of Thyagaraja – Koluvamaregada with strict adherence to the patanthara. All the adukku sangatis of the kriti were displayed with perfection. Neraval on the lines shrI karunika shrta cintaamanuniki was done with imagination and his voice engulfing the octaves with ease and felicity reaching upto mel daivatam. The swaras had very nice patterns.

In the post tani session, a slokam in the ragam Pilu preceeded he evergreen Jagadodharana and a tillana of Srimushnam Raja Rao brought the curtains down.

Visvesh Swaminathan on the violin provided good accompaniment. His candid raga essays and swara returns were insightful. An up coming musician he is sure to hit places soon. Puttur NIkshit, who received best Mridangam artiste award in the Academy under junior category embellished the concert with the right volume, delightful strokes and imagination. Sivaramakrishnan supported well on the Ganjira.
