This is direct radio relay of the concert- first two three songs are missing. Probably the relay started after those songs. Accompanists
V.V.Subramaniam
T.K.Murthy
T.H.Vinyakram
V.Nagarajan- Ganjira
Mannrgudi Ganesa Pillai- Morsing.
The song list.
Devi Neeye tunai- Keeravani (R,N,S)
Ekkalathilum maravene- Natakurinji (R)
Saranam saranam endrane- Chakravakam
Adum Deivam nee arulvay- Kambodi (R,N,S)
Vinayakuni- Madhyamavathy (R,N,S)
Karthikeya Gangeya- Thodi (R,N,S)
Thani
Bhogeendrasayinam- Kunthalavarali
Akhilandeswari- Dwijavanthi
One of the best concerts of MS Amma with many of her favourite songs and a few songs which can not be heard very frequently- like Adum Deivam, Ekkalathilum, Vinayakuni- that too with the necessary manodharmam elements. The alapanas are all captivating and follow different pattern. For instance, the alapana of Keeravani and Madhyamavathy do not follow step by step unfolding of the ragam. The key phrases are presented in a random order and with the choicest brighas and gamakams they portray a bright picture of the ragams.
Kambodi and Thodi are presented in a step by step method giving us a wholesome picture of the ragams. M.S. voice comes out the best in the recording- comparable with the U.N.concert or even the earlier 78 rpm recordings. Her abundant manodharmam, brighas, nagaswara pidis, gamakms and with a gay abandan in her vocalisation- many times there will be restraint. Normally, her neravals and swaras will have a restraint- Here very elaborate neraval and swaras for Adum Deivam and Karthikeya Gangeya which I have never seen in her post 1970 concerts.
I would have heard at least 50 times this Kambodi and Thodi in last two months. Thought of sharing with my rasikas.

Re: M.S SUBBULAKSHMI- TAMIL ISAI SANGHAM CONCERT 1968.
Thank you Sri C Rama for the succinct review of concert held 52 years back.
Surely the 1950's and 60's were Golden years of her music. The team accompanying was also arguably the best team which played for her. The concert has 4 elaborate ragams, neraval and swarams. Very commonplace in those times.
Thank you once again for the review and triggering old memories

This concert is of great vlaue to me because of the song selection and the sublime lyrics of the kritis.
See the charanam sahihtyam of the kriti Adum deivam nee arulvay. The first three sentences given below vivdly explain the Chidambara rahasiyam. And M.S has done elaborate neraval of these lines in her inimitable manner.
The succeeding lines are also well suitable for neraval and some others like Sanjay Suibramaniam do neraval on these lines.

For the kriti Ekkalathilum, M.S has sung two charanams. Apart from the commonly heard charanamтАФeesanai prakasanai, the following charanam also-

An excellent rewind of the past, CRama!
The incredible thing is that MSS was able to retain her vibrant voice, Sruti and presentation skills well in her evening years...
