Vivriddhi Musical Festival - 2020

Post by musicofmdr »

Webcasting live from home is tough and many times, external factors like recording device, network speed, disturbances in the home environment etc can affect the live concert and some concerts may not feel as "filling" for no fault of the artist. Even then, many have attempted this during this lockdown. Thumbs up!

Chanced upon a series of youtube webcasts conducted as part of "Vivriddhi Musical Festival" by "The Indian Music Experience" where a lot of young and relatively "new" singers have given 1 hour concerts from their homes (most are without accompaniments). I listened to few (not all) and felt some of them are worth a mention. Here are some of my picks:

Keshavan Narayanan Srivatsan - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1CZCP5si4c
Relatively the younger artist among the various participants. I liked the voice and the way he managed the kritis. The stage presence and mannerism was also good. This concert was one of the few which had the luxury of having a full set of accompaniments (that too a close-knit group). This helps the singer and also adds some compensation; one can also see how accompaniments can lift the feel of a concert!

Swarathmika - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z97cOUNPdsk
Nice voice and rendering. The pleasant and smiling face and the composed way in which she handled things during the concert was also nice. One hour boundary is a challenge for planning!

Neha Murthy - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kT9INTpbi2M
Another nice voice and good presentation. I liked the way she brought in voice modulations at different points. Would have loved this more if she had added a good neraval.

Arun Shankar - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQnVS8pw2wY
Very nice bass rich voice. Little bit different from the previous concerts in tempo - overall pace is "slower", but filled with "soukhyam". There were no attempts to create "wow" factor with speeed/overuse of bhrugas. The raga AlApanas were nice and loved the renderings as well. I hope he is able to continue this path.

In the early stages, people typically focus more on the process of creating the music. I hope that with time and experience, they are also able to fully enjoy the music while they are producing it. And hope they can also capture attention of more and more rasikas and organizers...
