Random kucheri notes

Post by sureshvv »

V. Deepika singing "Ra ra phani sayana" in harikamboji after beginning with nalinakanthi LGJ varnam. Has an easy soft delivery style that is most suited for this song. Don't remember hearing this kriti before.

Karthikeya Gangeya is the kriti chosen. 3rd Todi of the young season. Brinda Manickavasagam presented "amba nadhu vinnapamu" (pallavi gopala iyer) yesterday which was very nice.

Reethigowla is sukham thaan. Swaras at pallavi line. Sowkhyamana swaraprasthara eliciting applause. Consummated without much of a korvai.

Viruttam in Keeravani. You can tell what is coming.

Suresh, BVB seems to bring out the live blogger in you. Do they have wifi?

Come to think of it, that could be the next hot raskikas' demand. After clean toilets and good canteens, give us free wifi! :))

No wifi. But have a decent internet plan that works well.

Didn't mean for this thread to become a song list but it has turned out that way. Anyway the best was left to last. The thukkada section had:

1. Poonkuyil koovum pooncholayil
2. Viruttam (tiruvasagams - Ammaye appa & paal ninaindhootum) in Mohanam, Sama
3. Varuvaro varam tharuvaro
4. Bruhi mukhundheti
5. LGJ Revathy tillana
6. Tiruppugazh (Iyal Isai) in Desh
7. Karpagamey kadaikkan paarai

Exceptional concert that covered the gamut.

Malladi opening about 5 mins late with Thyagaraj palaya maam in gowla.
Lyrics wonderfully explained in the "Myriad forms of Siva" by Gayathri Girish last year.

Nice long round of swaras followed by a most mellow jayamanohari alapana. Attempted once before by Sikkil Gurucharan at hamsadvani IIRC (same day he sang chetula ra in natabhairavi & justified himself). Varadu starts violin return at ni. Very nicely done by both. Nee bhakthi baghya sudha.

Nannu brova mani cheppave in kalyani & now anandabhairavi alapana. Jr. Malladi providing additional judiciously placed ornamentation. O jagadamba. Friend who has recently learnt to recognize Syama sastry kritis confirming it with great satisfaction. Neraval @ raha mukhi saroja dala nayana.

Sai Giridhar on the mrdangam showing sensitivity by coming in & out during the violin responses. Sr. Malladi carressing the contours of anandabhairavi & neraval taken over by Jr. Malladi with laya play (could have stayed away a bit longer). Swaras with great percussion support.

Nice thani followed by Santhamu leka. Exquisite Behag alap & Adum chidambaramo. Edhuta nunaavu (annamayya?) in ahir bhairav, scratch that, bhujangini, tuned by neduneri garu (note to self: check out bhujangin)

Tillana in poornachandrika.

Whew! That was close. Escaped the feeding frenzy for my seat by the skin of my teeth, got the blessings of "sweta ganapathim" briefly at PSHSS & made my way thru' karthigai at the kuppam dodging fire crackers & now at raga sudha.

Points if you can guess the concert precipitating the feeding frenzy or the one where I had to evacuate with the blessings in a hurry.

Raga sudha

GV, Vittal, Neyveli Narayanan, BSP(k)

Mayamma on when I walked in.

A lightning speed Sri pathe with swaras next (note to self: what part of nee pada is swarakshara? definitely < 1)

Exquisite kharaharapriya alapana with
rolling sangatis punctuated with burning tyre brisk brigha stops.

Now mama hridhi vasanisham (sp?).

Then ena inikkum thiru arul kadaley (arutpa)

Revathy tillana (NN having a rocking time)

Nadi thedi (tiruppugazh) in dharmavathy

mangalam. Excellent to most excellent as rajeshnath may not say :)

Didn't spot you at RS, even though I expected you to be there!

The concert began a bit fast and furious for me, but soon settled down to a pace more to my liking. (Maybe this is why I was a bit fast and furious with a guy next to me using a mobile phone!!). Vittal was indeed excellent, the percussion section was amazingly polished. Speaking of which, I very much like Mr Giridar, who you were watching earlier. A real dose of PSP style there.

Attending concert of Sushma Somasekhar with Ananthakrishnan on the violin, Tanjore Praveen Kumar & Sri K.V.R S.Mani on percussion. Impressive voice & an aggressive energetic style.

Ma Ramanan for submain & Kailasanathena samrakshitoham for main.

Narada muni was at #2.

Sings so hard that she has bouts of muffled coughing between songs.

'Making waves', I said. Who does? First clue.
The year the star would shine only on the first of Jan onwards, that too in the hallowed hall of mmm, because of 'making waves' by saying: this year, I'm not singing during the season, but will listen to music. I spotted the star in Raga Sudha and at Partha...

Chitta swaram by nagai murali (announced - mutual admiration chatter cut short with begada announcement)

Terrific kalyanavasantam alapana with resounding applause. Can't be doing this just for the applause though.
