The quaintness of MDR's style is something that cannot pass without notice. It amuses the uninitiated and draws attention, while it is nectar to the acquainted ear - regardless of one's knowledge of music. I for one am addicted to MDR. Every minute of it holds out something special!

While listening to MDR's Vidulaku (Mayamalavagowla) i noticed a couple of things:

- He sings "mudamuna shankara krta nigama sAma " instead of "mudumuna shankara krta sAma nigama" It does make sense because he connects "sama mudamuna..."

- Also in charanam, instead of "pramukhulaku tyAgarAja vandyulaku brahmAnanda sudhAmbudhi marma"
he sings "pramukhulaku tyAgarAja vandyulaku sangita sudhAmbudhi marma"

.. any possible interpretations?

I just got to know that DD Thiruvananthapuram will be showing a documentary on my father on his Birthday. It is supposed to commence at 8.00 PM (IST) on May 20,2008. I don't have access to DD(T), so if anyone can record it, please let me know.

Balaji

Balaji sir,saw the documentary, unfortunately I didn’t have the facility to record it.
It was a short but very interesting ,people associated with him spoke, including dancers disciples and relatives.
His sister in law said he was fond of certain food items like ada, chutta pappadam!(roasted pappad, not in oil)
His disciple Shri Radhakrishnan said it was difficult to sing with him at concerts because he changes the sangathis from concert to concert and when mentioned about it,he said it is like changing the dress, only the dress is different, the body remains the same.

[quote]And finally things would come to a state where M.D.Ramanathan, his accompanists, the shruthi, Syama Sastri, the Swarajathi, Bhairavi ragam, Goddess Kamakshi herself and the sensitive listener, all fused together to become one single entity, brimming with music, completeness and perfection. It is this experience that I had in mind when I talked about “seeing God and showing God to others.â€

Providing the link below in case some one wish to read (re-read) it...

(Apologies in case I am repeating an earlier post with the same link.. its just that I find this one article very fresh and thought provoking even after reading it so many times)

There is a brief video of MDR on YouTube as well (presumably a clip from the one hour commercial video): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKCm8wBzTQg . His facial contortions are really incredible!

A fascinating writeup on MDR: http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/lif ... 170400.htm

Excerpt:
He opens the door with a warm smile and asks, "What brings the camera home?"
I remember saying, "To take you to its home, Sir." A full throated laughter and he asks, "Why me?"
"The artists of Cholamandal are eager/keen to listen to your music. They would love to have you amidst them."
"When do you want me to come?"
"Any day suitable to you, Sir."
"But you say they are artists."
"Yes."
"But these artists, like some of us, do not make much money. Right?"
"In a way, yes. But they very much want you to come."
"I do not want to put them to any difficulty. I will certainly come. But then, they may have to pay the accompanying artists. Do you think they could pay them some five hundred rupees?"
I was taken aback. Such a great musician, so highly rated and loved by thousands of rasikas, just asking for a modest sum for co-artists and nothing for himself!
I managed to say, "Yes, Sir. It would be a great honour to have you and certainly the artists would not mind any expenditure". And hesitantly, I asked, "Is there something we could do for you, Sir?"
A smile, and he asks, "You say that is a village. They have cows in there, right?"
Surprised, I say, "Yes."
"Then do one thing. Place a jug of hot milk, cow's milk... and Horlicks, by my side."
I was not sure he really meant it. However, I said, "Certainly, Sir. Is there something else we could do?"
M.D.R had a mischievous smile, "Anything else? Oh, yes, I forgot to mention. Keep some crystal sugar (kalkandu) too."
Sitting close by was his young son, listening to our conversation. Suddenly he turns around and asks, "Appa, I want ice cream."
I went and hugged the child, "Of course, yes."
That smile had not vanished. Said the father, "Keep a towel ready. I will have to wash his face!"
