This is a song which I had come across only recently
Kumara malai. Raga: mand. K/capu tala. Composer: K.S.Raghunathan.

P: kumara malaik-kuyilinam kuvum ishai ketkudu tanikai malait-terndalum talattup-padudu
Senthoorin alai oosai pudhinaga marudhu (K)
Isai ketkuthu Thellu thamiz pattilile

Vallal avan perai Dhinam seval inam padudhu
sharavanabhava venra sangitam paravudu Aru padai vidudaiya ezhil vendan namattaik- (Kumara)
C: pazhamudirum sholaiyil vandinam muzhangudu azhagan avan arulamudam thenaga payuthu
Valliudan kunjaryin manakollam paduthu
manakkolam kanudu annaiy umai tandai shivan arulasi kekudu tirumarugan

This is rendered by Smt Sudha ragunathan :

@sruthi: Yes, the voice is Sudha's. Intentionally a little deeper than usual, but unmistakable!

It is both lower and breathier (i.e. more air in the voice). I believe "husky" is the term for that kind of singing.

Sudha Ragunathan 1996 concert from "Parvathi", Mysore

Post by cpblog »

Respected Rasikas,

Please welcome @ http://chowdaiahandparvati.blogspot.com/ to a March 30, 1996 concert that Sudha Raghunathan gave in "Parvathi", Mysore. Unfortunately, we are unable to say who her brilliant accompanists were, that day.

Thanking you,

Sudha Raghunathan is conferred with the title of SANGITA KALANIDHI and she richly deserves the highest and most prestigious honour from the Music Academy.Sudha is one of the prime disciples of the great late MLV and carried the torch of Carnatic Music with abundant talent and skills. There was never a dull moment in Sudhas music and she used to keep the audience spell bound right from Varnam to Mangalam in any concert.Sudha has the knack of knowing the audience pulse and sing according to the expectations of her audience.A few years back Sudha sang in memory of her mentor at one of the city sabhas and the fans were emotionally touched by her concert.Perhaps when one compares with the great male vidwans like Ariyakudi GNB Maharajapuram and the evergreen Madurai Mani Iyer the no of female singers like MS MLV and DKP were less in numbers that way Kudos for Sudha now!

The note from Sudha Ragunathan says its all -

From the Desk of Padmabhushan awardee Sangita Kalanidhi Sudha Ragunathan

20 Nov, 2015

My very dear rasikas, friends and well wishers,
Greetings of the season and for the 'Season'!

It’s going to be another beautiful Marghazhi with many baskets and bouquets of music in varied hues. Here’s wishing you beautiful moments of soaking in the divine musical fare.

I have something to share with all of you. I have taken a decision to abstain from performing concerts this December season of 2015, primarily due to a health issue.... an acid reflux condition. Doctors have advised me to rest and refrain from straining for a month. That has left me with no choice but to abide - for the sake of my music and my health.

I am truly going to miss singing for each one of you. However, I have made this decision with the confidence that you will understand and support me in this musical journey where this break is just a brief halt to recuperate and continue with renewed energy.

Thank you for being with me and contributing to my success all through. We will meet soon.

In the service of music and humanity
Sudha Ragunathan

Thank you fro spreading accurate information :)

Wishing her well. It must be frustrating that a relatively small (but not at all trivial) problem is keeping her from the stage.

Yes this chance to see a rasika in her will be something I will look forward to !

Wishing Sudha nothing but the best in the new year and in many more years to come! The season and number of concerts in those few weeks is punishing, even if the performers are in the pink of health.

Chellappa,
Thanks for bringing the news from the horse's mouth.

Priya,
Hope she feels well enough to attend a few concerts, and as you wish, writes about them too--know her as we do as someone who is a great communicator.

Thiruvayuru visits by vidushi Sudha Ragunathan is covered in The Hindu write up of Jan 29 2021

I particularly like this snippet
SudhaInTheHinduFridayReviewJan2021 wrote: Many a times, during the group singing, I have heard comments about the lack of synchrony, or a lag in sruti or sangatis. I am undeterred by such criticism. It is only the experience and the ecstasy of the music that matter.
Let the bard of Tiruvaayuru and his beloved Lord RAmA bless all carnatic musicians from 2021 , 2020 is surely not a great year

Sachi,
Good to hear from you and that too with such good tidings! Congratulations to Smt. Sudha Raghunathan for such an honor being bestowed upon her. As a long time resident of New York state in the past, I am happy that the city is celebrating India, its history, culture and also the immigrants from the old land. It's honoring her too. I am doubly happy that on Sudha's very first tour of the US, she sang in NY State before she traveled to other parts of the country. What a joy it was to hear a very talented young singer like her for us folks who hadn't heard concerts in a long while!

Here was someone with a beautiful voice and verve--looking beautiful too. What I still remember is the gesture of her husband who wasn't with her, but had specially sent her flowers from India to wish her a grand tour! Touching gesture :) I am saying this because with all the talent that she had, it would not have been easy for her to reach the heights she has now, without an unfailing and loving support system.

Wishing her and hers, many more such happy moments :)

Arasi, well said!

Being under a famous, glamorous, daring musician guru and having almost everything going well for you (blessed as a child by Sri Satya Sai Baba)can skew the mind and prevent true achievement of one's potential. Not in her case, though! She has also engaged her audiences in many creative ways during the lockdown.
