Bhushany Kalyanaraman on her husband and guru:
"He never took any fee from his many students, he was a very stern man, a strict taskmaster, and a perfectionist. His family was quite well to do, which allowed him to concentrate on music. A veritable genius as a vocalist, he even had many senior musicians coming to him for guidance."

Pranavam..
I usually dont go through my previous uploads , while sitting down to select again. On each occasion I am struck by a different facet of his music. This time around I have been wondering how he brings about a new dimension to a krithi I have heard so often and had thought I had heard all the variations possible.
So if there are some of the previous uploads that you specifically need, please make a note of them for me.

In have got a good idea of what you want.

To avoid cluttering of space here.
You can look forward to these uploads.
Meanwhile If someone has the tracks of his Shudh Sarang , Shanmukhapriya RTP,Natakuranji RTP , please do chip in.By uploading.
The track where he speaks about Mehdi , I may find it difficult to relocate.Lets see if someone has it in that form

I think this is with MSG - Trichy Sankaran, Thyagaraja Day Celebrations, a Bombay concert. He gives an intro to every kriti before rendering.

I shall be zeroing on a few renderings not put up here, earlier.

That is the way with SK for me .So many memories start jumping out of the pandoras box.
Tracks that once again come to haunt me.

This time I will be trying some 30 mt plus renderings.
I always enjoy the change in his approach for the last 1/.5 ths of the course.
Like the Long distance runner ,getting a burst of adrenalin from nowhere.
And steadily drawing away from the rest of the impressions I have gathered till date.

In this Todi Track , I find the alapana absolutely a scorcher and at 25 minutes or so, something magical happens

with TNK ? and Palghat Raghu ? ( ? is my guess)
Enjoy !!

Coolkarni,
Thanks for the Valaji, it is sweet beyond words. It wows me to think that this is the same man who did also "Kshanamadhuna" in the same raga. He went where no one else did.

This seems to be the same as the recording in the previous concert I linked above (with the Shanmukhapriya RTP), and that one is labeled as SKR-MSG-TVG. It is indeed mind-boggling, though.

Seems the URL has changed from what I'd originally posted (didn't originally have the "0" preceding the folder name). Here's the current address --

coolkarni,

I agree with you about the thodi. Some of the passages are breathtaking. The santhatamu and kshanmathuna in that one concert were entirely different essays of the same raga. It just goes to show the depth of his music. GNB and Jayadeva's compositional intent seemed to have been so well comprehended when you listen to his rendition of the same.

You mention a Hindolam...samaja vara gamana...with MSG and UKS. There is one concert of his in circulation which dates back to '63. It was at Podar College in Bombay with MSG and TVG. It had a Shanmughapriya RTP and Hindolam as the main ragam. It was samaja vara gamana again. His sancharas in Hindolam, the swara prastharam, MSG and TVG being up to speed...words can't express. In the ragamalika swaram in the RTP has a passage of Hamsanandi in which he has really outdone himself.

Hallo every one
Though TSK belongs to the GNB school, he had his own inimical style and the handling /taming of VIVADI ragas used to be stupendous and he defenitely was a trend setter particularly in adding flavour to any Vivadhi raga with consummate ease, keeping aside the so called purists' adverse remarks of yester year vidwans. His mission was penchantly aimed at bringing to limelight what all nuances he came across in his musical pursuit and he never succumbed/subdued to politicised pressures which commonly prevailed in the music field during his time What a great vidwan he was !!!

I am very happy to have come across such a website where S.Kalaynaraman is the discussion topic. I have searched and searched for websites on him but only found some with one paragraph of information on him. It is sad to note that a great musician like him was not recognised for his talent.

I have had the great privilage of living with Bhushany Kalyanaraman for about 12 months and learning music from her. Even though I am just a student on a path of finding soul music I have been attracted to the vivadhi raga's since i was very little more and to find out about Kalaynaraman's talent on these raga's was as if I had landed on heaven!

So many of his compositions and tunings to songs are just beyond words! I don't even have the knowledge to analyse it but just looking at his hand written notations and hearing that he use to get up in the middle of the night and write notations to songs just proves what a GREAT musician he was. I have learnt some from many many of his compositions and even though i want to learn all of his but knowing atleast this much is enough for many births to come!

I am just greatful for having had such an opportunity to have known about a great person, but i wish i could have been there to see him in person when he performed! my biggest dream is to meet him in person. Even just practising in front of his photo & GNB's photo had the greatest energy of them being there and guiding you......

Every single time Bhushany aunty spoke of him there was such light in her eyes.. One day I asked her to teach me the song 'engu naan selveen aya' in ragam 'Dwijavanthi'; aunty was singing it and i couldn't help it but tears were just running down and then she started crying it, but it was not sad tears... the song is just a beautiful song with a meaning that goes deep into your soul... Aunty was remembering when Kalaynaraman sung that song to teach her and she said that after she heard him she was crying...
every single time we sat down to sing, i really felt like his presence was always there, not to mention I lived with Kalyanaraman & GNB for all those months, I went to bed seeing both of their photos and woke up seeing them as well.

I could just keep talking about him...

no, I have not watched any vedio of him singing. But have heard his recordings from my teacher, even when we are driving to a saree shop for shopping.

Today I was chatting to one of Lalgudi J's fav student Pakal Ramadas (he is here in Sydney at the moment) and he was talking about the 'dwi madyama ragas' which kalayanaraman did on the first 36 melakartha ragas. Ramadas sir played for the recording and apparently after the playing for couple of weeks he couldn't touch the violin because his fingers would not stay steady on the notes (utter confusion after playing 2 madyamams). So, he was saying that if thats how much confusion he was enduring after playing just imagine the amount of depth of music that must have been within Kalyanaraman to have actually come up with the idea and have demonstrated that!! he simply said that 'he was a maha vidwan'....

Deepavali, an evening HindustAni Raag, has been created by Flutist PannAlAl Ghosh. This raag is said to be a blend of both raags Yaman & lalit of HM.

Thanks Kulkarniji. Here is some more,

Raag Deepavali (Nityanand Haldipur,Sandeep Bhattacharya),
Raag Dev Gandhaar (Shubha Mudgal and Aneesh Pradhan)

Episode 4 : Special Divali Repertoire by Nityanand Haldipur, Shubha Mudgal and Aneesh Pradhan

from Underscore Records Podcasts
Deepavali is a raag created by flute maestro Pannalal Ghosh whose playing style Nityanand follows closely.

The introductory alaap in Raag Deepavali makes it evident that it seems to be primarily a blend of
Raag Yaman and Raag Lalit, but Nityanand Haldipur explains that Pannalal Ghosh meant it to be a
murchhana of Raag Puriya Kalyan. The alaap is followed by a gat in Raag Deepavali composed by
Pannalal Ghosh, who is the creator of this beautiful evening raag.

I strongly feel that TSK was TOO BRILLIANT for him to succeed in POPULARITY contests which ultimately decide who is great etc. He insisted on violating the Cardinal rule by singing rare ragas, compositions etc not familiar to audiences. In the process in my view he made himself immortal when it comes to creativity & the rendering of Jayadevar's Asthapathis & Koteeswara Iyer's Kanda Ganamudam 72 mela kartha kritis - the latter incidentally one of the MANY "for all time" contributions of Sri.S.Rajam. vkv
