Praveen Sparsh

Post by rajeshnat »

Tanjore Praveen Kumar or Praveen Sparsh is grandson of Tanjore Upendran . There was a lovely writeup in The Hindu featuring third generation musicians taking up CM. I am assuming all the others may have seen their grandparents . But Praveen was born only after Upendran Sir passed away. Incidentally Praveen from the palakkad mani iyer school married the young violinist Shreya Devanath who was the junior disciple of Lalgudi Jayaraman.

Tanjore Praveen Kumar /Praveen Sparsh plays brilliantly and best wishes to his musical career. Great writeup and it is heartening to see third generation musicians that too like praveen who has not seen his brilliant Upendran Sir

I have heard and watched Praveen Sparsh on several occasions now. He has accompanied TMK very well in a few concerts available online

He has done some collaborations with the word quartet...

In the latest Friends in Concert TMK team he plays Taanam on the mridangam.

I find his tonality varies quite a bit. But consistently he plays with a "passion" and good anticipation. Excellent presence.

He does produce good Nadham and heard Utube concerts with TM Krishna. He is married to Shreya Devnath whio is a Violinist and disciple of Lalgudi G Jayaraman.
They have formed a quartet with Nagaswaram- Violin,Nagaswaram,Mridangam and Thavil.

Praveen is one of the most sensitive and musical of mridangists. I don't add "young" to that: he is one of my favourites of any age.

His duets with Mrs Sparsh (Shreya Devnath) are the absolute example of a snippet of a conversation that I had with him a couple of years ago:

Me... "... ... ... but I like the slow and gentle music best."
Him... "That is our favourite too."

He is totally attentive to the main artist, and will never bang on regardless, but always play accordingly. There is a interview online in which he tells how he learnt this lesson from guru Guruvayur Dorai: first listen, then play.

I did not know that Praveen also learnt from Nellai balaji . That happened before he joining as Guravayur Durai Sir . Nice writeup in The Hindu dated 27th Feb 2021

Here is the full-length, not shortened for column inches, article, including a recording of the interview itself:

Thank you NickH , simply a wonderful interview by Lakshmi Anand. Praveen is way too mature and he understands deeply the role and sound of mrudu angam. The generation of Anantha Krishnan, Arjun Ganesh, Praveen Sparsh and NC Bharadwaj and few more are indeed rocking . Praveen by birth must have taken a lot of PMI through Tanjore Upendran and significant training from Guruvayur Dorai must have taken pazhani school.
