Dr. S. Ramanathan used to give some lectures on music, like "A Day with Thyagaraja", Music prior to Thyagaraja, during the period of Thyagaraja, post Thygaraja etc. The lectures were informative. Also he gave lecdem on 22 srutis. It would be very interesting to listen to these musical discourses.

It is not fair to leave Ramanathan sir's section dull,he was such a great person,so let us give it life?.
He was the disciple of Tiger,Ponnaih pillai,Sabhesha iyer.Associated with Annamalai university and some utys in America as well. Not many people knew that he was a good vainika also,in fact taught veena at Kalakshetra.
As a platform singer,he created no over sensation, voice wasn?t timbre like,or powerful. No fast brikas or head breaking kanakku in swara singing,it was so simple and touching. He was a scholar in tamil folk music and popularised kaavdi chintu.
He was equally good at music theory also. Not only he was knowledgeable, but he was ready and able to convey things thro lec dems.Anybody having such lec dems,pl post it here, they worth so much.I don?t know anybody used to record the lec dems at music academy or any other sabhas during the season, personal recordings,if not the sabha people themselves.
This is a music site,so there has to be audio files, unfortunately due to copyright issues,it is very much restricted.
Soumya,Unnikrishnan(who later learnt under Savithri Sathymurthy, who was also a student of Ramanathan)
Apart from a scholarly musician,he was a gem of a man,utterly humble,like a true saint.
Dressed in whites(which goes with his gray hair, beard and mustache!) he used to sit straight when singing, with his ever pleasant and calm face.
I have attended probably 10 of his concerts(plus some lec dems, one was on kaavadi chintu)from 1980 to 87. I can share something more about this man; he was invited to sing for a sabha near my native place, and the financial position of that sabha was so pathetic, that they were unable to pay him(not sure if they paid him at least the train fare! ) he wasn?t angry, but told them to arrange his concert whenever they face financial problems!
Then,on one occasion, some other musician(it was not ?some other?,but T.N.Seshagopala n!)was to perform after his concert.(yes, that concert is fresh in memories?he sang devagandhari, which was the main piece)he listened to most part of TNS concert and in the taxi,on the way to station,he was humming the raga TNS sang?)
Posting some parts of his concert conducted by AIR,before an invited audience in connection with Swathi thirunal jayanthi.not sure about the year, but it has to be 1979-81
With M.Chandrasekharan/Umayalapuram Sivaraman?all three got Kalanidhi later!!
Somebody has given vocal support, anybody can identify? Soumya used to accompany him,I have attended some such concerts(when she was a kid)but this is a male voice?he is a good 26 years older now, that?s for sure!!
Attended one more of his concert at the very auditorium,in 87, it was sad to see him struggling,it should be one of his last public concert,if not the last.He passed away in 1988.
As he himself used to sing, yarukku yar theriyum avar mahimai?

If "A Day with Thyagaraja" is not a commercial release, I will be happy to upload it. It is an absolute gem !!!!!!!! (in spite of the fact that my copy is of poor audio quality).

jayachAmarAja..

One of the unspoken rules I follow here (for the past few months .. and I have got away with it..) is to put up the track first and then let someone complain.
It is a fair enough rule since it is so difficult to get to know what is copyrighted and what is not.
So Pleaaaaaase upload it.Atleast I will not have to kick myself anymore for missing out on these..

Yes: AFAIK, he was also involved with the Kalakshetra (RDA seems to have had an unerring eye for talent), and he (like Higgins Bhagavathar) got his PhD from Wesleyan Unniversity. If I remember correctly, unlike Higgins who worked in India for his dissertation, Dr. Ramanathan worked in the US for his.
It is felt that the years he spent in the US robbed him of opportunities to display his talent in India/Madras, and ultimately the SK...is that true?

Ravi,

Dr. Ramanathan did get the SK (1986 ?). He was a victim of the infamous "curse of the SK" in
the sense that he passed away the year after he got the award.

I think your above statement confuses him with Ramnad Krishnan, who did spend some
time taeching at Wesleyan and unfortunately passed away young in 1973.

Uh oh... there seems to be a lot of confusion regarding Dr. S. Ramanathan here! To set the record straight: Dr. Ramanathan earned his Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from Wesleyan Univ. for his dissertation on the music of the Silappadikaram. The Wesleyan stint did not rob him of any fame here in India. Till his last days he was considered one of the greatest musicians, scholars and teachers. He was one of those few people who have struck that elusive balance between popular musicianship and scholarship. He was bestowed the Sangita Kalanidhi in 1985. Dr. Ramanathan was not associated with Kalakshetra (that was our other favorite legend: MDR). Dr. Ramanathan passed away in 1988.

Hopefully 'coolkarni' can help by re-posting that link to a lovely video clip of Dr. Ramanathan singing Swati Tirunal's "sArasa sama mukha" (khamAs) accompanied by LGJ and VR!

Thanks Badri and jayachAmarAja for the video and audio uploads. I am enjoying listening to both. The video is amazing indeed. Thanks coolkarni. As always, SR looked the simple saint he was and it is great to hear the the saintly and divine music from such a person. I think I saw a fleeting few frames of a young Sowmya sitting behind the professor, is that right? And who is the other young female sitting directly behind him? I assume she was a disciple as well. Does she perform now?

BTW, is this the video that brought Sowmya to coolkarni's house, the anecdote I read in another thread here? ( see I am catching up ;-) )

Just coming back from a meeting with Manakkal famly (Rangarajan and his son Sriram).
They have been very appreciative of the spirit that goes into these kinds of sharing and discussions.
But more on that later in a separate thread.(CML.. you guessed right.I
have returned with some great recordings
Srkris .. FYI .Manakkals Home is full of Chembai related stories and recordings.I have booked a meeting with their family on behalf of our forum.Get your notepad ready and suggest me a date !)

Just viewed about Dr. S. Ramanathan. Truly, he was such a simple man and a great artist. He used to be so encouraging and appreciative. I still remember as a boy I had accompanied my father in one of the radio main concerts(in those days radio concerts were given the utmost importance) . He came all the way from triplicane by bus to our home that he was very impressed by my mridangam and reminded him of my guru maestro palghat mani iyer. So great and pure was his heart. In another concert of my father on the occasion of Mayuram Viswanatha Iyer's jayanthi, He sat till the end and during todi in the midst of Karthikeya kangeya he stood up and publically with emotion came out in the stage and spoke that he was moved with tears and rarely had he come across such a karthikeya. An artist wholeheartedly appreciating another artist. Most people may not be knowing the fact that he was a veena vidwan and an expert veena teacher initially. My mother had learnt from in those days. He was a genius with a humble heart. He used to be like a saint in the later days.

manakkalsriram - very true indeed - I echo similar sentiments. My mom was also his student. He was the judge when I went for the Central Govt Scholarship test and was so encouraging and explained the importance of practicing "thattu varisais" in akaaram and in different ragas every morning. I had to name a different guru on the paper because the Govt would not give you scholarship money if you learn from your mom/dad ;) Dr. SR sir told me "Why do you want a different guru when you have a wealth of knowledge and an excellent guru in your own mom".

A very pleasing and humble human being indeed.

Couple of months ago, I spent a fine afternoon with MV Ramana - at his office-, along with GB Rajashekhar and other friends ,in Bangalore.
It was close on the heels of the symposium at Narada Gana Sabha and he was bubbling with so many ideas / thoughts.
Such a fine article, this one.
