I happened to listen a tamil padam by Smt. MSS and Smt. RV on youtube (probably couple of years back) in gaulipantu ragam. The sahityam is something like "Vijaya Dwarakanathanai" ... Is there any recording of this padam that you can share?

Regards, Perarulalan
Only one recording is available. They performed it in Academy in the year 1962.

Prasad was the executive officer in TTD .here he narrartes how the idea of getting Annamacharya krits sung by Smt.MS as ELP. sprang in his mind
How he got the inspiration.
the language is poetic.
--------------------
As he was walking out of the main temple Prasad found a small group of poor singers sitting
right in front of the temple singing bhajans in praise of the holy Lord.
As though halted by an invisible hand Prasad stood there for a few minutes.
He was spellbound by the amazing talent of those folk singers and more so by their rustic style of
singing.
After a few more moments of silent listening Prasad smiled
and smiled with a great sense of relief and smiled with an amazing feeling of satisfaction. Watching Prasad smile the holy Lord smiled and watching the
holy Lord smile the whole of Tirumala smiled and watching the
whole of Tirumala smile the five elements of Nature too smiled.
And later those historic smiles scripted an epoch making chapter
in the history of Indian classical music that S
Subbulakshmi forever but also launched her into immortality in
the world of devotional music that later earned her a well deserved highest civilian award
of India, the “Bharat Ratna”.

thanks for the link , RSR ji. That was a good one!

among the compositions sung by ms amma some have been very popular among bharatanatyam repertoire.
(to name a few)

kamakshi swarajathi,
mathe malayadhwaja(daru varnam),
idadu padam thooki(krithi)
kuvalayakshiro(padam),
jagadhodharana(dasara pada)
priye charusheele(ashtapadi)
cheli nenetlu(javali),
and dhanashri thillana

and even the maithreem bhajatha is very popular add-on in bharatanatyam recitals nowadays.

we have not heard pieces like alarippu, jathiswaram, shabdham and varnam in bharatanatyam style from mss. (which we miss)

=====The link given has error and so,
Yesterday and today, created a fresh page for M.S.Subbulakshmi photos .
Have covered about 100 images ( 10 sets with 10 images in each) arranged in a single column, 10 rows table for each set. It loads more quickly . this way.
https://sites.google.com/site/mssubbula ... /ms-photos
I think, we can easily go upto 150 images ( 15 sets) bringing back precious nostalgic and glorious memories, for rasikas for whom Smt.MS is like a deity.
Each image will have a brief heading and where applicable, link to
articles and news items and notes.

Shyama Sastry is said to have composed swarajathi NOT for any dance performance.
He was probably the first to compose in a new form of the svarajati musical genre, where the compositions could be rendered solely in a singing or instrumental manner. Prior to this, the svarajati was primarily a dance form, and was close in structure to the dance Varṇaṃ (padavarṇaṃ).

His set of three famous svarajati(s) are intended to be sung in concert rather than danced, and are sometimes referred to as "Ratnatrayam" (Three jewels). They are Kāmākṣhī Anudinamu, Kāmākṣhī Padayugamē, and Rāvē himagiri kumāri, composed in the ragas Bhairavi, Yadukula kambhoji and Todi respectively. The former two are set to Miśra Cāpu Tāḷa, while the third is set to Ādi Tāḷa.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shyama_Shastri
I wish that CM is completely delinked from BN, That was the aim of the founders of classical CM. ( Purandhara dasa and others).
--------------
Though Smt.MS was familiar with BN ( she did not dance even in films!). and though both Radha and Anandhi were trained BN dancers,
https://sites.google.com/site/mssubbula ... /ms-photos
(look for set-04)
they abruptly discontinued any stage performance. Radha devoted herself entirely to being the twin-voice of Smt.MS . and Anandhi to writing and promotion of KinderGarten education and Kalakshetra teaching work

This is a rare clip from the Hindi version of the film MEERA of M.S.Subbulakshmi

http://youtube.com/watch?v=3YbafdoYfz8
----------------------------------------------------------
Though the scenes are almost the same as in the original Tamil version of the film( 1945), the songs were different. and vying with the tamil songs for honours.
-------------------------
1) nandabala, murali mohana
2) kaatrinile -> hari aawan ki aavaaz
3) enathu uLLame-> baso mere nainan me
4) giridhara gopaalaa
5) yadhu nandhanaa-> brundhaavana kunja bavana
6)
7) leelaikal -> chaakar raako ji
8) hey hare dhayaalaa
9) maravene -> Pag ghunghroo re
10) charaacharam+() -> maiyn hari charan ki daasi
------------------------------------------
The scenes of following glorious songs can be seen here
----------------------------------------------------
1) maiyn hari charan ki dasi

2) aranga un makimaiyai -> hamne_suni_hari

3) maraintha koondil -> moarae tho giridhara golaala

4) udal uruka -> daras bina ( raga malika)

5) antha naaLum ->yaadh aavae yaadh aave

6) engum nirainthaaye -> kunjana vana chaadi he maadho

till she reaches Dwarika.
A brief narrative has been attempted for these scenes and songs.
It will be fine if the lyrics in hindi and meaning are given.

Just 4 days back, created a blog for Smt.M.S.Subbulakshmi's Meera film ( HINDI VERSION) at https://meera1947.blogspot.com
A brief outline of the story has been given and links to each song from the original sound track contributed by Hem Chandra Jain and youtube videos contributed by Nivedita Ramakrishnan are also given.
It is proposed to give the meaning in English and Tamizh for each song in the coming months.

@cienu
Sir, I need the original English version of speech by Sarojini Naidu as a tribute to Smt.M.S -1947 premiere of Meera film at Delhi.
Kindly help.
---------------------------------------------------
I got the tamil translation here ( I do not remember from where).
( the following passage is in tamil)
------------------------------

Though I am a devotee of Smt.MS, I prefer her earlier songs. from 1938 to 1968. ( her age , 22 to 52). Her saregama recording was given after that period and they were under copyright and could not be shared much.
Moreover, Annamacharya is said to have lived around 1400 AD. It placed him even prior to PurandaraDasa.(1500 AD) and scholarly musicologists like Dr.V.Ragavan (carnatica) have not mentioned about him much anywhere. He is said to have composed great many songs lingering in the popular minds of people in Rayalaseema region ( Thiruppathi) . and I had read some nice blogs on him ( unfortunately, unable to locate them now). and many of his songs were said to be of 'padam' type of rather explicit nature though of NammAzhvar variety. and quite a few of wonderful devotion, just like Haridasa ( Periyaazhvaar) songs, The songs chosen by Smt.MS to sing, were very high in philosophical and devotion aspect totally avoiding any erotic themes. . In theme, many were almost like Purandara Dasa / Thyagaraja swami kritis. If we are primarily interested in the tuning ( as I am) , it was a bit dampening, that all the tunes were set by modern musicians. That prevents my mind from associating him as a composer. ( perhaps, the same reason why it was not sung much in the first 70 years of 20th century( 1900-1970) in concert platforms.

Recently, I came to know that almost all the songs given as records by Smt.MS as Annamacharya kritis (1980) have been placed in public domain ( by saregama to youtube).
and it has now become possible to share the youtube links here .without any license infringement.
Here they are . and some good souls have given transliteration and translation in youtube itself. as comments!.God Bless them.

Let us preserve and share them ,whatever be the historical accuracy of his life, best left to scholars.

( a quote from google book on Smt.MS)
" M.s. rendering of the MeLa Ragamalika of MahaVaidyanatha Sivan, was a rare achievement. She was then 78. (1994).
The ragamalika comprises 72 maLa-kartha ragams in a single kriti. There is just a hair-breadth difference between raga and raga and the ragas had to be distinguished. The ragamalika was rich in sanskrit words. In her declining years, M.S. learned this complex composition ,studied it, and rendered it beautifully and flawlessly.
It seems that when the Paramacharya of Kanchi listened to this Ragamalika,
he exclaimed " As long as the Sun and Moon, abide in the sky, this Ragamalika will be remembered".

Yes, Sir. You are right. I came across this article in The Hindu just now.
Image
In the photo , we find Sri.T.T.Vasu, Sri.Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer,Mrs.Alexander and Sri.Sadasivam. The then Governor of Tamilnadu, Sri.P.C.Alexander is greeting Smt.MS on the occasion

"
The small studio is packed with intent listeners as the newly recorded mela raga malika sung by M. S. Subbulakshmi is played before sound engineers and scholars for final approval before its release. M.S. waits anxiously for guru Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer's verdict. Had he not taught her this rare and long piece years ago? As the spool winds to a close a beaming Semmangudi bursts into applause thus setting his seal of approval on the achievement. With the release of this cassette, compact disc and LP record by HMV, a new life has been breathed into a legend that had awed and mystified most vidwans and connoisseurs by the sheer complexity and magnificence of its design.....
The article was originally published on April 12, 1989. We're republishing it as a part of M.S. Subbulakshmi Centenary Celebrations.

I had not included ,so far in my website for her.,Smt.MS 's (1) kurai ondrum illai by Rajaji (ragamalika) and (2) Kanchi Acharya's hymn ( also a ragamalika, said to be tuned by Vasanth Desai) and sung by Smt.MS in her UN concert.(1966). Did it only yesterday.
Here they are.

As far Darbari Kanada, such a soulful ragam from Hindusthani Music, there is only one definitive song , set to tune by Piano Vaidyanathan HARI THUM HARO JANA KI PEER. a Meerabai bajan ( not in film) and a favourite Bajan of Gandhiji. Just three stanzas, all of them common to Vaishnava bakthi poets, and great many renowned Carnatic composers including Thyagaraja Swami ( Draupathi, Prahladha, Gajendra ) . MS record sometime in 1947 is unmatched.

There is Barathy's immortal lines in Panchali Sabadham there and also a heart-rending tribute to Piano Vaidyanathan by Gowri Ramnarayan.
